Protected sex but was it?

Hi All,

Thanks for all the work you are doing and in alleviating fears for people, a fear I currently have. I appreciate this may have been asked before but I would appreciate an answer for my own scenario. I recently engaged in sexual activity with two female workers. Had protected oral and vaginal sex with them for about 1 and a half hours. My problem is I found a cut, about a third of the way up my shaft. very small slightly larger than a pin prick with blood on it. This I know for sure wasn’t covered by the condom for a period during sex and was most definitely inside one, if not  both vaginas. My fear is what is the risk of HIV in this scenario, it is less than 48 hours ago now, have been to a clinic but the doctor wouldn’t listen to me when I said it wasn’t covered, he was convinced it was. I was sent away without PEP, should I get another doctors opinion or am I ok? By the time I get there it will be close to 60 hours since activity.  Appreciate your help in advance

I see no reason for concern. Relax and move on with your life.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.  Consider starting PrEP as an additional layer of HIV prevention going forward.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as safe in terms of HIV might still pose a risk for transmission of other far easier to acquire STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

Hi Jim,

Your ability to reply so quickly is amazing, thank you! Makes my night. Lastly and I’ll leave you be, if access to blood cells allows viruses to travel, would it not be a possibility in this case? There was blood evident and it was definitely enclosed completely in both vaginas. Will deffo be getting a check in 6weeks/3 months but should I be getting PEP or also another opinion as I dont think the doctor listened when I told him the cut was exposed to the inside of both vaginas. Not the head etc, granted

No, small cuts, grazes, spots, skin issues we have a forum filled with them, it's not a sufficient route.  HIV is not just like every virus, it's difficult to transmit, thankfully.

If this was your only sexual encounter then I don't even even recommend testing outside of standard yearly routine. I'm sorry that the doctor did not do a better job of explaining things but I would agree with them PEP is not warranted and I'm glad they didn't prescribed it for peace of mind purposes as that would just leave you thinking you did have a real world risk when you didn't

Jim, legend thanks. Well done on all the help you give everyone, it’s a fair dedication, hopefully you’ll keep it up, maybe medicine is a calling if you’re not already in it. Sorry now just hit me and tell me F off if it’s nothing to do here but, never been vaccinated for hep b, any info to risks associated with this instance? Think it’s the last of my 3 comments so thanks again and take care

Hepatitis is a different story in terms of transmission risks and infectiousness, that said I would not see great concern from this encounter either.

I would recommend you talk about getting vaccinated the next time you see your doctor.
