Tuscon, I got the 5% from your post. Look,my point is if Bono want to spend someones tax dollars why not spend Irelands or the Netherlands. Thats all. I really don't understand what your argument is. I have no problem with what he does with his finances, I was just stating that he had done something to avoid paying certain taxes in Ireland.
My original post was about Dems giving him the slip. I thought that was funny. I can just see Bono, with that two day old beard, and a pair of Eltons old shades, unbathed, showing up at Capitol Hill. He just doesnt get it. The Dems and Media played his game all day long when it was Reps telling him to go fly a kite, so he thought Dems would pony up. What a dope.
My point on Hiv spending here vs. Africa was not meant to beat up on Africans, but to show what these crooks in Washington are faced with everyday. There is only a finite amount of money(of course this isnt true because the government is printing it as fast they can)to spend. You have to make hard choices. You just can't throw money at every problem. I believe our priority should be US citizens. I wonder where more money was stolen, in the billions thrown at New Orleans or Iraq. probably a toss up. W sure likes to throw a lot of paper around.

Even if the money was entirely a non-issue, I think it stands as a good question on philosophical grounds.

As in....how does one go about qualifying and quantifying need?

As in....how does one go about qualifying and quantifying need?

And furthermore, how does one define "need?"

This entire question is fraught with moral and ethical peril.

Tread lightly.

Yeah.   Had to hit the 'Enter' key when the phone rang.  Still on it now.  Not about to tread any further...not with a split focus, for sure!  Yipe!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

What's that saying?  "Politics is the art of the possible."

Many Americans, with more political clout than Bono... think poor people, corporations, people with cancer, people with HIV/AIDS, NASA, foreign governments, state governments, universities, civil rights leaders, lobbyists, people who want mass transit, the military, and everyone in between... all essentially petition the federal government for something.

They get part of what they want but never all of it.

So there are Democrats in Congress?  Awesome.  But politics is still the art of the possible.  There are 300,000,000 people in this country, and you're not going to stay in power for very long when you end up making most of them mad by bankrupting your principles.

Republicans learned that the hard way.

Democrats are attempting to show (in a very public, very easy way) that they can exercise fiscal restraint.  They won the Congress partly on the idea that Bush was bankrupting the federal treasury and that the Republicans had begun hemmoraghing cash to pay for their pet projects.

This is no time, when all eyes are on a Congress that hasn't even convened yet, to begin spending money they don't even have.

It's easy for Bono to come up and ask for a handout for his cause.  Everyone in this country (and indeed around the world) comes to Washington with their hands out.  What's hard is deciding what should be done with the money that's given to the federal government in good faith.  Someone (by which I mean "a lot of voters") is going to get really annoyed if they see Democrats promising cash gratis like the Republicans swore they would.

As much as I think it would be great for the government to fund every single AIDS program both here and around the world at needed levels, there are millions of other people with different programs on the top of their agendas, and they get a say, too.

They're politicians, not philanthropists... and they're also money managers, not miracle workers.

This story is completely ridiculous.  Bono asks for money and didn't get it.  Boo hoo.

Here's a news story, I stepped in dog crap on my way to work.  Make a big deal about that, somebody... please.
