HIV docs/meds in India
« on: May 14, 2016, 02:10:27 pm »
I'll soon be moving to New Delhi, India, for a new job and am looking for doctors who specialize in HIV. Also wondering if all the HIV drugs available in the US are readily available in India. I will have private health insurance. Appreciate any leads or suggestions anyone may have.

Let me share some information I have gathered from someone I know who lives in New Delhi, India.
I dont know about any particular doctor but there is an NGO in Delhi called AHF which provides medicines and good treatment for free. It follows UK government guidelines for ART prescriprion instead of Indian government which makes it more favorable.

If you already are on a combo here its better to keep getting your meds from US if thats an option, since most of the latest combinations are not yet available in India. which includes components from Stribild, Triumeq, Tivicay which are most common first line drugs in US. Atripla is still most commonly prescribed combination in India.

Unlike USA I am not sure if insurers in India pay for medicines, specially HIV medicines since almost all insurers will deny a policy for people living with HIV. However,As far as costs is concerned its peanuts compared to what you have to pay in the US. it costs around $20-$40 per month without insurance.
I hope this information helps.

nycmec,
Unfortunately I don't have any useful information on this topic

However did want to say Welcome you to the forum and I'm presuming you are from the US looking at the username. I must admit working in India sounds like a great opportunity and I hope you keep us posted on your travels.

I know its off topic but out of interest is the plan to move to India permanently ?

Thanks samm2015 for the info. I'll continue to explore my options for getting meds.

JimDublin, thanks for the welcome! I am US based and not sure how long this job assignment will last, but I plan to move back to the US at some point.

If finding a doctor and meds becomes too frustrating you might consider going to Thailand...

One can easily see a world class doctor and get a 6 month supply of meds at a very reasonable price on a few day trip to Bangkok which is a short flight from India...

Check out the links below that describe the process and the meds available at the Red Cross Pharmacy...

India has a large medicines manufacturing industry. Cipla would be one of the largest firms, the brand name of leading medications will be different from the US.

A lot of Cipla's version of truvada has been imported by individuals in Australia because the price is much cheaper than what could be accessed here for prep. Quality has been the same as in the west.

Here's alisting of what medications are available in India, brand names are going to vary but in general the locally produced medications are much cheaper than in the west.

Hi nycmec,

I have been trying to find an HIV specialist in India myself. There are a lot of world class HIV specialists in India but it depends upon what part of India you are in.

There's a doctor named Dr Suneetha Nareddy in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (you can google her). She has worked as an HIV specialist in both US and India. She is currently practicing in India.
I am looking for a doctor in New Delhi. I would start with Apollo Hospitals. They are considered one of the best in Asia.

If you want more information re ARTs in India, you can call NACO, India (National AIDS Control Organization) @ +911143509982
