I got off topic there talking about the hot guy from "V".  Thanks for the post.  I love watching every documentary about space.  Right now, I'm TIVOing "How the Universe Works" on Discovery.  I've seen so many shows like these that are just mind blowing.  It is hard to wrap your mind around how large the universe is and how earth sits in one of the arms of a spiral galaxy.  The debate over whether the universe will expand so much that it will rip is interesting, too.

It is always hard for me to understand how so many people believe Earth is the only place where life is.  I know we are here, because everything just seemed to happened to make Earth a good place for life.  That has had to happen many other times when you think how many galaxies and planets there are.

The universe is so vast, time is so long and there are so many possible combinations for various elements to come together I think there is definitely other life out there. I read an article recently that broke down the odds and even if you are very conservative there should be thousands of civilizations out there. However the same circumstances that point towards other civilizations existing-- vast time, space-- combined with the speed of light also make it highly unlikely we will every be able to have contact or communicate with extraterrestrial life. Are we alone? No, but we may as well be.

Stephen Hawking states Extraterrestrials are certain to exist. With 100 billion galaxys, each containing hundreds of millions of stars, with each star potentially having a number of planets, mathematically it is highly unlikely earth is alone in harboring life.

Hawking says the majority of life out there is probably microbes and small animals, however he believes there are more than a few advanced life forms out there and it would be in humanities best interest not to seek them out.

He believes any advanced life forms could potentially raid earths natural resources and move on, just as Christopher Columbus raided the native americans land and resources.

...However I would gladly exchange a few natural resources for an Alien AIDS Cure

I saw a special once where someone calculated the odds of there being other life out there.  He specifically focused on carbon based life forms that would exist on a planet such as ours.  The number was astronomically low.  However as was said the universe is so incredibly vast to believe that we are unique within it would seem to be an egotistical misstep.

Some of the science of traveling the stars might just be beyond the realm of physical possibility, but you never know in the last 100 years our race has accomplished so much more than had been done in the previous 25,000 years.  It makes me wonder what I will see in my lifetime that in the beginning seemed impossible.

I got around to watching that Discovery program tonight.  They talked about things I've thought about before.  We think of the universe being soooooo huge.  Maybe the universe is actually something inside of something else.  I've always wondered whether this whole thing is just a science experiment of some larger creature.  If ya think of the universe as cells in the body, then it is so small compared to our bodies.  And, if we could travel to the end of the universe, would we hit a wall?  The other interesting thing is that the universe is 14 billion years old.  Many believe it will collapse back on itself, but cause another Big Bang.  How many Big Bangs have there been?  14 billion years is such a small amount of time when talking about the universe.  Our sun will have burned out and consumed the Earth before the universe collapes. 

Sounds like I've been smoking something, but I haven't.  I'm just really intersted in this stuff.  One of my favorite memories of all time was being on the beach in FL and this guy had a powerful telescope on the pier.  He let us look.  You could see Saturn and its rings plain as day.  He also showed us Jupiter.  You could see the iconic storm on Jupiter that is suppose to be the size of 3-4 Earths.  It was so amazing.

Something interesting to ponder.  Think of human beings or say the earth as being a virus, perhaps what we think of as the universe is a creature and say that creature runs on...carbon, or oxygen.  We're just consuming a resource that it needs to survive.  Sound familiar?

Philosophy is filled with interesting scenarios such as that.  Like say the Matrix is based on the "Brain-in-a-vat" theory.  Essentially what we perceive is real is what IS real because we have no other way of determining what is and is not real.  So we could all be brains-in-a-vat, but this human experience is the reality, not what we actually are.

I was struggling to explain to a friend about the real possibility of parallel universe last week until I watched a program on the history channel with a simple example to ponder .

They showed a laser refracted through glass . A point of energy that exist in multiple locations .

For those that get into this stuff, this is really interesting reading. It's the responses of 12 astrophysicists and astronomers to Prof. Stephen Hawking’s on extraterrestrial civilizations. ie.  his proclomation that "Aliens exist and we should not talk to them."

These guys are all PHD's and are not Wackos. The majority agree that it's perfectly possible and likely probable that Alien civilations exist. Some interesting points from them are:

Our greatest fear shouldnt be having contact with intelligent life forms, it should be the fear of  unknown viruses hitching rides on meteorites and infecting earth. Hmmmmm.....HIV?

"Humans 1 million years old, The universe is 13 billlion years old. Are we so egotistacle to think that we are the only supreme beings in the universe given our short time in the universe?"

"Space dust reveals organic carbon. Meteorites have shown nucleo basis, ketones, quinines, carboxylic acids, amines and amides. Where is these life giving organic substances originating from? Only 40 or so years ago we thought they only existed on earth"

"WHy no contact yet? Maybe what has taken place on this planet (humans) is so common and mundane there is no motivation to communicate with a world that is just like a trillion other planets swarming with human like creatures. Kind of like the ant hill in the corner of the city park, why would we seek it out if they are inconsequential and are everywhere?"

Another interesting tidbit I wasnt aware of was that in 1972 and 1973 Voyager 10 and Pioneer 11 blasted off to explore the universe. Included where Gold annodized plaques featuring a nude male and female along with several symbols detailing where we lived (like a return address) both were last seen exiting the solar system past Pluto in 1995 we have no clue where they are now, they will theoretically continue on their journey forever or until aliens pick them up.
