what would you do if you had a time machine?
-
I would go back to when I was little, maybe around 5 years old, and tell my parents I had Asperger's Syndrome and was transsexual, so that I could get the proper treatment then instead of having to wait until I was an adult and had suffered for years!
-
Why- I can see where your going with this,(i did it myself) and for your own sake you're not doing yourself any good.
I find it helps not to wish for time machines, rewind buttons on life and "if only".
-
I would jump forward at about 500 year increments. I would love to know what humanity is going to do! How far will man travel in space? Will we genetically engineer our offspring? How far will computer technology progress? What social problems will be solved? What problems will persist?
I geek out just thinking about it!
-
I must admit, when i was younger, I alway's wanted to have a TARDIS or be one of the doctors assistants
-
I would go back in time and have sex with Marilyn Monroe, of course a time frame before Jack and John got a hold of her.
-
I would go two places
into the future too see what it was like probable about a hundred years.
and I would go back tio when I was 16, bitch smack myself, rip me a new one for running away and dropping out of school. Probable kick my own ass then leave =)
-
Oh I can think of a million things.
I was shopping for Murano vases on ebay the other day and they easily run into the thousands or tens of thousands. This is a rather frequent fantasy of any collector - you go back in time and get tons of the crap you know your are gonna love in the future and which will be very valuable an garantee a good life in retirement.
Then there is all the humanitarian stuff.
Sometimes, also, I have this. In fact I did again the other day. I am time warped back in history and have to make the best of my hap hazzard knowledge on thousands of topics. What about a conversation with a medieval doctor. Could you explain what you know about the science of health today, in a way that would lead a medieval doctor to improve his "practice", as it were. Could you explain the difference between a viral and baterial infection?
Could you help prevent human tragedies - the Holocaust? Slavery in the Western Hemisphere. etc etc.
When i was boy there was this corny movie on "the 4:30 Movie." It was about a auntie and her niece? nephew? niece i think, from the corn belt, who took a couple of thousand dollars (hundred dollars?) and went to NY (or was it chicago) and lived the high life for a long time. Every so often when I am feeling poor I remember that movie and fantasize about time travelling on my modern salary. Wow, think of the house I could buy. When i think of what my parents paid for their house! Geez!
Also sex fantasies about the past.
And thats not even considering the future.
-
i would be scared to go back in time. I'm afraid of that butterfly effect.
What if by going back and changing something, I actually make my life worse!
oh I know that's the half-empty way to look at the glass; but I've often said I never worry about the good things that'll happen to me (why should I? They're good things for heaven's sake. ;D I'll be happy they happened); but it's the bad things I worry about, try to plan for, and try to minimize. So rather that thinking I could go back and "make things right" (whatever that might even mean), I chose to worry about going back and screwing stuff up. criminy! :o My life has had enough issues now, without risking it being worse. LOL
Naw, I've made my way to this point, so I'll just stick with the life I know without using Mr. Peabody's Wayback machine.

In a way these are some very refreshing responses!
I expected this thread to be filled with "I would go back and use a condom, " I would not have had sex with that guy", etc...and yet No one has said that.
I think this shows that we as HIV'ers are a strong group, and that given the chance we would take the opportunity to go back and become better people, help the world, etc.. in spite of the issue of HIV.
-W
-
OK I would be a sociopathic xenophobe, and go back to the time of early humans and infect them all with HIV and then the butterfly effect might mean that HIV is no longer a threat to humans!!!! If some neaderthal like humans need to die for us in the present, so be it!
-
If some neaderthal like humans need to die for us in the present, so be it!
HA! Too late MEchh, you already said this...."Then there is all the humanitarian stuff", "Could you help prevent human tragedies - the Holocaust? Slavery in the Western Hemisphere. etc etc".
You 'ol softy you :)
-
I would go back to the good ol' stripping days, and definitely charge the perverts more dollars.
-
I'd go back one day, play the winning numbers for the powerball, and travel back to the future to spend my 140 million on male hookers, booze, travel, and high end fashion (and I'd send some nice gifts to a couple of you byotches in here).
-

Duh, in a time machine why not? Its a classic of the genre, the butterfly effect. Have I missed something?
-
Go back to before I entered Matty's new blog and not press that Willy Bum Bum video (can't get it out of my head)
Rev? what kinda nice gifts?
-
Duh, in a time machine why not? Its a classic of the genre, the butterfly effect. Have I missed something?
Yes - precisely. The point of the story is that you CAN NOT change anything in the past, lest it will have horrible repercussions on the future.
For example - say you stop the Holocaust. It might lead to an even bigger Holocaust 20 years later where 200 million people are killed.
-
HA! Too late MEchh, you already said this...."Then there is all the humanitarian stuff", "Could you help prevent human tragedies - the Holocaust? Slavery in the Western Hemisphere. etc etc".

Epidemiologically speaking, we're talking wiping out near all of the early human race. People with human rights as much as ourselves today. I think its sociopathic! Intent to do harm. Re: other current threads!
-
The point of the story is that you CAN NOT change anything in the past, lest it will have horrible repercussions on the future.
actually the OP just asked what you would do with a time machine. There were no stipulations on going back, or going forward, or not being able to effect either. I'm the one that suggested going back and screwing with things would mess up the present; but that's just me, because I'm a worrier.
If I really had a time machine, I would go back a short amount of time, change something to make my life and/or others better, and then I would travel to the future to make sure I made things better not worse.
Hmmm, but that was the plot of a Star Trek Voyager 2-part episode ("The Year of Hell") where Annorax, after he meddled with time with his time-ship, keeps trying to "fix" the past to return to a present/future where his wife wasn't dead. Which I guess just gives some credence to my opinion of not screwing with time cause it'll mess everything up. :D
See what you've missed by not being a Trekkie. LOL ;)
-
I would only have to go back one week. I would already know the winning numbers for all the states lottery's and Powereball, and I would play them ! :P Should hold me over for a while. :D

Ha! I watched this scenario develop for a whole season of X-men cartoon when they send a mutant from the future to change the past. And then he goes back to the future to check if it worked out. It would always get worse and he'd go back in time. I don't think he ever figured it out :(
Don't remember what year - 1994 or 95.
These themes get reused over and over :)
-
I would go back about 45 mins ago to kfC and ask for that piece of chicken they shorted me . I have never been overly ambitious but I am still a little hungry .
-
You know, you can't change the past, right?
If we are going to get technical, Einstein's theory of relativity proves that jumping forward in time is possible but going back in time is not.
(I hear my mother's voice in my head saying one of her usual bon mots: "Don't get technical with me, kid! I know what I know!")
-
I would use it to cash in big on the lottery, then pay BT65 more dollars.
-
You're all so damn greedy. Doncha wanna help humanity? Excuse me while a adjust my halo.

didnt you see mine? I am quite sure it would have inspired her to live, thus making the world a much better place.

Woulda-Coulda answer: I'd make sure my parents shared a giggly joint instead of pitchers of stupifying martinis (I believe I owe that quote to Timothy Leary,)
If only answer: Ancient Egypt, but only if I could be close to the court and not a laborer with fantastic arms but a big belly and a bad back
And stock answer: I refuse time travel, because I wouldn't have the career I have now, the partner I have now, or the friends I have here at aidsmeds.com if I had changed something back then
-
I reported you Basquo for cheating.
-
Yeah, well, your roach is too loose and your paper's too tight...find that on youtube, sharkboy...
-
I would probably go ahead and ask friends if they wanted to have sex. I remember having sooo many hot guy friends in highschool who would joke around and say, "Suck it." I passed it off as joking and was afraid to do anything. I know now that they probably were serious and were passing it off as a joke.
If you watch those NOVA specials, many scientists actually believe time travel is possible. I can never get my mind around that concept.
-

Like - gymrat said - scientists believe that you can only travel *forward* in time. Way you do it is by getting on a rocket that moves with the speed of light. While you are on that rocket time will pass much slower than on Earth. So when you return, Earth could move forward 100 years while you spent only 2 years on the rocket.
But then you'll be just living in the future - no way to get back.
-
yep, that remote controll in the movie click, was a usefull tool, i would love to play with that.
If only I knew what I know now, then
-
If I had a time machine, I'd sell it for scrap. I'm happy where I'm at. Be here now! :)
-
Sell it on e bay Ann
You get a much better price for junk on e bay

I would stop Aids.
Stop aids how?
Or you mean you'd go forward in time, get the vaccine and then go back and give it to everybody in the past?
-

it's just another cultural shortcoming moment :D
that's the business model of the underpants gnomes from the cartoon Southpark

I already explained. You go back far enough and infect them, like the acrobat does today, thousands, and then evolution takes over, the strongest survive, and HIV is but a trace in our DNA.

Franch TV really ought to show southpark :'(

40 million people have had HIV. 0 have developed immunity. I think you stand a higher chance of wiping out the human race than finding a way to eradicate hiv.
-
I already explained. You go back far enough and infect them, like the acrobat does today, thousands, and then evolution takes over, the strongest survive, and HIV is but a trace in our DNA.
That's pretty extreme. You would doom thousands of cavemen and/or women to AIDS, without access to meds and Ryan White, just so you won't have it in the present. I like it! ;D
Of course you'd have to infect babies so that they would (hopefully) die before reproducing. Life was likely pretty short as it was back then.
-
Dears I havent worked out the technicalities Im waiting to hear from the Aaron Diamond Fondation.
Yes, dears, its a sociopathic idea, as I noted in my first mention.
It only came up in response to ourselves patting ourselves on the back in the first posts of this thread for such high and mighty human uses of the time machine.
Oh for the technicalities - i guess people who have the genes for long-term-survival would survive to produce babies. Also I think you could imagine that since the entire race has not been infected with HIV, if it were, we might find many more ways that people might be naturally good defenders.
Long term non progressors do have immunity. Immunity means resistance to disease.
-

I stand corrected. Also forgot about the ccr5 delta 32 mutation. Funny enough that mutation probably developed in response to the bubonic plague. So you have a point
-
Let's see.....
I would also tell Bush to read his PDB's (Presidential Daily Briefings). I guess I would have contacted him in August 2001 while on his month long vacation.
I would tell myself to make better decisions with career.
I would tell Michael Jackson Propofol isn't for home use.
And, tell Lincoln to skip the play.
-
I tell Adam n Eve not to touch that apple
-

And your (weaker?) ancestors would have died in the "new" past....and suddenly you will seize to exist in the current present :o
-
Yep, obviously. It was not a real idea it was an idea that made ironic sense at a moment in time in this thread about unreal pasts and presents. But if you believe in reincarnation my soul would be around and maybe as another creature or maybe human. And if I didn't exist in the present, who cares, not me, cause there would be no me. And the world would be a better place, but wouldn't know it, cause who worries these days about bubonic plague and other diseases lost to history!
-
I'd rather my first experience - living in the past on my current salary. Somehow I find this a fantasy that comforts me today, when I dont feel so rich.
One time I lived a fantasy kind of like the Sex and the City girls in their new movie. I worked part-time for a billionaire family and whenever I was working I was in their world of incredible luxury, comfort, peace and beauty for weeks at a time. Each time I made the commute between my world and their world, and back again, it was like a kind of time travel.
Maybe all history is forever present on this earth all the time. We think conditions and experiences of the past or future are not now, but in fact, there is misery and evil and bliss and goodness all the time present on this earth, now.
-
My body and mind are my time machine . I'm content here and I am at peace for now .
I can look back at where I have been and it helps me to get where I want to go .
-
Stop aids how?
Or you mean you'd go forward in time, get the vaccine and then go back and give it to everybody in the past?
Why not both. Go back in time to see where it started and halt the wave or go forward in time, get the cure and then go back in time and cure everyone.
-
And your (weaker?) ancestors would have died in the "new" past....and suddenly you will seize to exist in the current present :o
So Grasshopper, what if your paradox did not matter and he gets what he wishes anyway. Afterall, it is just a fantasy.
-

Write all this down on a post it note . If this forum disappears we will know it worked . I think .

Yeah, just like a wish is a fantasy as well ;-)

I'm not liking the traveling back in time before douche and infecting cave man thing .
If it doesn't work and they steal a time machine we will have a bunch of cave people posting in the am I infected forum ... not a good thing .

Once you go Caveman, You never go back...

Cavemen or hacky sack playing unwashed frat boys. Same dif.
-
OK, if I had a time machine, besides curing or stopping Aids, I would go back to win every sport bet, win major lotto in the tens of millions, play wall street, stop myself for dating or getting involved with the wrong people, own a couple of castles, islands, and mansions all over the world and I would be a major player in business and still be unknown. And stop or warn of incoming disasters.
-
OK i would go back in time and yeah, make millions in the teens, and then I would make the most spectacular busby berkeley type movies, and glamorous broadway reviews. I'd have a splendid park avenue apartment like in the deco movies, and a ranch somewhere hot, and a luxurious zeppelin hovering over San Francisco. I would build a spectacular luna park of the finest quality materials on the Jersey Shore, and surround it with model new towns with "space age" architecture. Both would both persist to this day. I would found a free university in the middle west for the youth of the depression, and it would grow to international status after WWII and the GI bill. It would be profoundly humanist and leftist and nobody would be able to stop it because it would be funded by an enormous endowment and graduate only brilliant people. I would build interfaith YMCA YWCA type institutions around the world with cheap rooms, language institutes, peace studies, and gorgeous swimming pools. They would be mixed sex and no intolerance would be allowed.
I would give scads of money to communes to experiment on all kinds of things with no oversight from my foundation.
Open community gardens in major cities.
Build a better public transport system.
All in the 20's 30's and 40's, and all of it would still exist today.
-
Oh, and just for the fun of it,
I'd journey to the turn of the century New York or Paris or London and attend a gentlemen's ball filled with dandies, swells, transvestites and rough trade. We'd drink sweet champagne from coupes not flutes, slurp iced seafood, take cocaine and have endless torrid sex all night long then go to a fabulous brasserie for lunch the next day. Then take carriages to the shore and sleep in tents til midnight at the edge of vast estate, and start all over again.
-
I'd do the tourist thing in the ancient world, visit alexandria, see the great library.. shake Hypatia and Theron's hands... see what happened at Machu Pichu, see the Pyramids while they were still covered in Marble.. basically do the wonders of the ancient world :-)
J
-
I sometime feel I have gone back in time in my dreams . I frequently dream I visiting a friend or a loved one that has passed . These dreams are always on familiar ground such a home or favorite place we used to share .
I am always aware in my dream visit that they have passed but we never talk about that . I wake up feeling good and feel as though I have experienced something special and personal like a good visit . I'm also on Atripla LOL .
-
wait...I got it...
why don't we just go back and kill the damn tiger that bit the monkey? then monkey's no have aids..ancient tigers die off and the human race is saved
-
I'd witness the crucifixion of jesus christ for sure. I'd also want to see the dinosaurs although that could be a little dangerous probably. I don't think I would try to avert any major crises although I would probably go have a chat with my 14 year old self and warn me about all the bad decisions I could have easily avoided. That of course would make the paradox begin because then I wouldn't have had a reason to go back in time and thus it never would have happened.

Did you all read The Time Traveller's Wife
Great book. Ok film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySiDuCTew0g
For those not in on story. Henry is a time traveller. A slightly older Henry (then the guy in this scene) has been visiting a very young girl (the women in the scene) and they fall in love. At least the little girl falls in love with this older guy who time travels to meet her. (Yeah a bit creepy, but he is a gentlemen and never screws the girl) So now she is grown up and meets her love Henry, but hes a bit younger and hasn't met her yet.
-
I haven't read that .... I did read Douglas Adams hitchhikers guide to the galaxy years ago and couldn't get enough .

Yeah I said I thought it was OK.
Attractive actors I agree.

I thought it was better than "great". It was an excellent book!
(damn. what a heart-wrenching ending though. Of course, having lost my own loves, those kinds of story lines appeal to me and those kinds of scenarios always give me a punch in the gut.)
unfortunately no film can ever be as good as a book (there's just not enough screen time, and it's impossible to properly protray the thoughts of the characters, which books are filled with); but it stuck to the plot and was ok.

well, I didnt read this book, did they change the ending of the book in the movie?
I read Dear John and was so disappointed with the movie. The ending is the best part of the book and they totally destroyed it in the movie.
-
well, I didnt read this book, did they change the ending of the book in the movie?
nope.
spoiler alert: I thought the story pretty much ended when henry returned from being accidentally shot by Clare's brother. I felt the author rushed through the final chapter, tying up the loose threads afterwards. You find about alba and her time traveling, and henry returns that last time when Clare is old. But that scene I thought, in both the book and in movie, seemed incomplete and left something to be desired.
didn't read "Dear John", though I just started "A Single Man". Oh and after watching the first two movies last week, I read through the books and I'm about to start book three of the "Twilight" series. (I think I have to side with the hot wolf boy and be on Jacob's team :D )
Sounds like we need to get a book thread or movie thread going again. LOL
