Anyone else getting this virus warning on POZ
« on: December 21, 2009, 08:45:18 pm »
OK, everytime I come into POZ today my virus software is alerting me to the following virus:

Trojan.JS.Iframe.ef

Anyone else seeing this?  It's in my temporary internet folder.

I'm not getting the alert anywhere else.  A bit ironic that I only get the virus warning here, but........

I got a virus alert earlier that ended with an .ef suffix but I assumed it was from my internet virus protection company such as Norton or whatever.  I think perhaps virus alerts are going out in large numbers this time of year.

AntiVir warned me too. It was such a good antivirus program that it even shut down my browser  ;)

It didn't happen until I tried to reply to this thread.
but now everything seems to be happy again. Weird  ::)

Yes. Ditto to esper's post with the following notations...symantec antivirus gave me warning that Trojan.Pidief.C was quarantined, and Bloodhound.Exploit.196 was deleted.

of course.  ;D there still aren't enough mac users to make it worthwhile to try to infect them.  :D There are so many more unsuspecting, untrained users on Windows, it makes it the perfect choice for hackers and spammers alike. One day when users are spilt closer to 50/50, we'll all be at risk and annoyed by viruses. Enjoy your peace while it lasts ;) ;D

Misleading -- 12% of residential use is with Macs

The 2009 Household Penetration Study is out and it offers some very revealing findings–findings that are nothing like what you might think of when reading the name of the study, so start thinking household computing. The NPD study finds that almost 12 percent of U.S. households with a computer are now sporting a Mac. This number demonstrates an increase of three percentage points from last year’s first annual Household Penetration Study.

The study further breaks down Mac use. Out of the Mac users in the study, 72 percent use laptops (50% for PC users) and 85 percent also own a Windows-based PC. 66 percent of those homes with Macs house three or more computers, while only 29 percent of Windows homes reported owning three or more. Further confirming that Apple lovers are more up to date on advanced technological gadgets, the study found that ownership of other devices breaks down as follows: iPod: 63 percent of Mac households/36 percent of overall computer owners, navigation system: 50/30 percent, DSLR camera: 32/12 percent, 50 + inch LCD TV: 18/8 percent.

Despite the cool image that Apple tries to ingrain into your mind, the cited reason for the increased number of computers and devices in Mac households is not extra hipness, but extra cash–36 percent of Mac households in the study reported household income as $100K or above. On the other hand, only 21 percent of all computer households were in that bracket. [NPD via MacWorld]

and how is what I wrote misleading? That's exactly what I said without quoting a number. Doh! ::) I wasn't dissing the macs

the vast majority of viruses are aimed at windows/ibm system since they comprise 88% of the market (according to what you posted). Some day when macs comprise 33%, 44%, or 55%, then that apple op will be more under fire by viruses/hackers.

Mac OS X, with its Unix-based file system and kernel, is harder to infect with a self-replicating program. (See Claudiu Dumitru's MacOS X Vulnerabilities for background.) Windows, as I understand it, allows users to write run executable code outside their own protected memory space; Mac OS X does not.

...Household Penetration Study...

Is that a new euphemism for watching porn? As in... "I was in my bedroom the other night, conducting a Household Penetration Study, when my mother suddenly burst into the room. Most embarrassing, I can tell you!"  Just curious.... ;D

I haven't had any warnings and I have to wonder if it's not because I use FireFox? They do claim to have some built-in protection against this kind of thing. And yes, I do have an up-to-date antivirus thingy.

I use Firefox as well but got the warnings. I reported the virus to the admins here just a few minutes ago. The message I get is AVG has blocked atanda.com/p I have had this message not only on one PC but multiple with different anti virus software programs installed. It is only coming from this site.

I'm looking into this now.

Do me a favor -- going forward, if ever you guys ever notice anything as potentially significant (and site-wide) as this, please use the report to the moderator link... this will put the notice in our e-mail inboxes immediately.

Thanks,

It looks as if this was a scripting error that was being flagged as suspect by anti-virus software. In short, this was not a threat.

That said, I want to be sure that the error has been remedied -- can you guys please let me know if you're still receiving trojan/virus warnings from your anti-virus programs?

Tim,
I just logged out and back in, and no warning from Semantec, so I would suppose your repair worked.  Earlier today, I got both Trojan and Bloodhound, but since you explained it; I see it wasn't real  :)    Ah, modern life and technology!   Bleah!

No virus notifications with Windows XP or 7 on a total of 4 pc's.  I use Symantec Corporate Edition, which is always updated.  That's with both Firefox and IE6 and 8.

On another note... I wonder that 12% that now have a Mac in the household.  Is that the only computer in the household or do they also have a Windows-based one (or more) as well?  I know several people who have Macs, and most of them also have Windows PC's.

Hi Gang...

Okay... we think we may have figured this out. Again, it doesn't appear to be a threat to anyone.

As of 3:45, if any of you experience this problem again -- or for the first time -- would you please get in touch with me via e-mail? I will be out of the office and want to be able to raise any and all ongoing problems with our IT department as they're reported.

Thanks very much for your help and I do apologize for any frustrations this may be causing,

I got the warning yesterday and earlier today but it disappeared as quickly as it came.   Since the AVG virus encyclopedia had nothing about atlanda.com/p I ignored it.

atlanda.com is a real estate site for Atlanta but adding /p generates a 404 message so I think AVG took umbrage -- besides the question of what that site has to do with AIDSMeds...  Has Smart & Strong diversified?  I thought the real estate bubble bursted...

Since the days of Win95, 98, and Me, that's what mine do - work.  Even so, I never had many problems with the earlier versions of Windows (back to the 3.0 days).

I actually used to have an apple - a IIe with two floppy disc drives ;D back in 1983. What an improvement that was over the my Trash-80 or the college mainframe with punch card interfacing :D Then around 87 I got a windows 2.0 machine and been using them ever since. Though none of my machines have ever given me any problems (short of a fan that blew up once), several of my clients had problems with Packard-Bells and with WinME - which meant I had problems with those too. LOL  :D

My first computer was a Timex-Sinclair. It had a flat keyboard like a burger-king register, plugged into the tv for the monitor, printed out on thermal rolling tape and use cassettes for storage medium. It has a whopping 2k worth of memory! But I learned 8080 assembly and basic on it so Fortran was a breeze - cause nothing could make cobol make sense if your forgot a period. LOL :D

I haven't had any warnings and I have to wonder if it's not because I use FireFox?

Yeah, Jamie D's just not figured that out yet.

I know several people who have Macs, and most of them also have Windows PC's.

Well, what do you expect in Wilmington?

...
I actually used to have an apple - a IIe with two floppy disc drives ;D back in 1983. ...

My first computer was an abacus...  it really stank as a word processor but that's what IBM Selectrics were for.  Thank goodness I divested my IBM office machine stock for some little start-up in Washington state.  Its name was MicroSatan or something like that.  If only I could find the damned folio.  Must be worth a few bucks.

At work the interface between our in-house library system and the OCLC cataloging database was a IIe, back in 86/87... I collected 3 discarded spares to cannibalize as components failed.  Luckily our library system vendor eventually upgraded the interface to an IBM PC XT with that whopping 10MB hard drive and one 5.25 floppy drive.  Another obsolete machine to replace the more obsolete IIe, although I guess "obsolete" is sorta like "unique" -- modifiers don't really apply, do they?

While cleaning one niche in my hovel last night I bit the bullet and tossed the remainder of my 3.5 inch 1.2MB floppies, which included 3 MS DOS 6.1 diskettes.  If anyone wants them the trash hasn't been collected yet.  Gimme a holler.

I also finally parted with the American Heritage Dictionary on a 3.5 floppy.  Way back then when boredom became too great I'd officiously request a closed-door meeting with whoever was around my office, close the door, then hit the function key macro which repeatedly said "fuck you" in droning female and male voices (the f word was said by the lady!!).  It never palled... for about 3 months.

Here I lie typing on my TouchSmart 12.1" lapdog ("top?  lap... top?" "get rid of it."  "but it's soooo cute!! -- and it's not just for life, it's for christmas!").  I haven't had a floppy drive in 10 years at the least (shades of James Woods in Videodrome, with a diskette drive where a belly button used to be) .   I rarely even burn a CD or DVD -- USB thumb drives are so much easier.  Although there isn't really a need I keep checking 64GB thumb drives online waiting for the price of a decent brand to drop sufficiently. I don't even collect CDs any more -- all MP3 all the time although I refuse to buy anything below 192kbps, which is why I hated the original iTunes.

Lordie... someone's sleep deprivation is showing... please excuse this wildly disjointed digression.  It's so atypical... ha ha (ho hum) ha!

Neither the desktop or laptop are getting those warnings any longer.  Thanks for fixing that!
