Names Reporting.....Scary Stuff!
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:18:25 pm »
i made a post of this a while back and it didnt get much reaction.

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=178855&srvc=home

this scars the sh*t out of me! the federal government has never been known to be the guardian of any kinda private info. y do they want the names? y force states to change policy? then to threaten to cut off funds if they didnt comply is an abomination!  whatz wrong w/ the id# system? wherez all the glad and human rights campain people?...... sounds like a buncha nazis to me: sich haile bush.

i think we all need to send a letter to ur senator & congressman voicing your concern of  our hiv privacy.

I don't think it's a big deal.  They can find out everything about anyone anyway when they want to.  We're long past the point of no return on all of this stuff.

While I agree the gov't can find out anything they want, it does concern me that they have to have names in order to provide funding.  I'm more concerned with what else can be done by having my name on a list.  Will I be kept from certain jobs?  Will I be forced to live in a certain place?  Will I not be able to leave the country or not be able to come back?  Sorry I am a conspiracy theorist at heart....

There truly is no real "right" to privacy.
It is not in the US constitution, however, we do have the right to not be bothered...Ill look that one up and edit my post.

I really have no worries about who knows what about me...I have nothing to hide.

Yes, scary, serious stuff.  But consider the pharmacy you may get your medications from, what might happen if, for some non-governmental reason, someone used the info. on file (name, address, etc.) for whatever reasons?  Or someone hacked, not into T.J. Maxx's records, but your doctor's?  It's the devil's bargain, to get certain benefits we gradually give up more and more, in this case anonymity.  Win

Well in the past the State Health Dept. usually gets the names if POZ people moving to they're state partially for statistical data to report how many HIV/AIDS cases in each state. I also believe it might have to do with figuring out how much funding or Ryan White money goes to a demographic area based upon the numbers of POZ people in the state, or metro areas etc...

I'll give you one example in my case I'm in the military I have been told that when I retire or get out and move to a state of choice the Dept of Health is priivy to the info of whos POZ and moves to they're state. They add me to they're numbers of other POZ people in the that State, County etc..

I believe the numbers also go to the CDC as well for they're reporting data as well. As far as conspiracy theories I dont know if thats the case. I understand that a lot of people don't like certain politcians but I'm not so sure that is the motive.

Part of a Washington Post article about New York City tracking diabetics, talks about both sides of the issue - privacy and public health.  Also shows it's not just HIV that gets tracked I guess.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/10/AR2006011001625.html

New York City Starts To Monitor Diabetics

The government has a long history of tracking infectious diseases -- including cholera, gonorrhea, malaria, plague and, more recently, AIDS -- to protect the public. In addition to requiring that such diseases be reported, public health officials have sometimes taken more aggressive steps, quarantining sick travelers, confining tuberculosis patients who are not taking their drugs and notifying the sexual partners of people with syphilis. Governments also track cancer cases to spot clusters.

Some managed health care plans have begun gathering information about chronic diseases and notifying doctors and patients when care could be improved.

But the New York effort marks the first time any government has required routine reporting of laboratory test results for a major chronic, noninfectious disease so that government officials can scrutinize how well doctors and patients are treating it.

I am firmly of the opinion that the United States federal government couldn't find its ass with two hands and a map... especially when it comes to domestic social issues.  Katrina, anyone?

This is why I really can't get too worked up about this stuff.

So they have my name on file somewhere as being poz... I'm more worried that they know that I used to subscribe to The Worker's Vanguard when I was 20.
