Lower Abdominal pain...
« on: January 11, 2010, 08:11:11 pm »
Back in Feb or Mar of 2009 I started having this horrible lower abdominal pain.  I dealt with it all day long and then finally went to the ER that evening.  From the pain that I was having they thought in was my appendix but it wasn't and they never found out exactly what it was.

I went to my OB/GYN doctor for a follow up and they did an internal ultra sound and she told me that it looked as if I had a cyst on my ovary and it was busting causing all the pain.  This would happen about 2 days before I would start my period and it happened 3 months in a row.  I went until December and it happened again.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to help prevent this from happening again?  Or what I can do to ease the pain b/c my doctor just keeps telling me to take Ibuprofen and sit with a heating pad which I can't really do that when I'm working!

Sorry I left out something.  The cysts are filling with blood and bursting!

Brook, if I had an OB/GYN who told me to take ibuprofen and use a heating pad on blood-filled, bursting ovarian cysts, I'd run, not walk, to another doctor. I've had ovarian cysts in the past and every one had to be removed surgically. They can be dangerous.

I have to wonder if maybe your doctor isn't very hiv-friendly. Maybe she's wary of operating on you. Her non-treatment of you certainly sounds suspect.

Get a second opinion. Maybe ask for a referral to a GYN who is comfortable around and has experience with hiv positive women from your hiv doctor. Good luck, and don't delay. I know I sure wouldn't!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Thanks Ann for the reply.

I don't believe that she has a problem with my HIV+ status.  She actually seemed a little upset when I told her that I would being seeing a specialist when I was pregnant.  However, I have been back a few times through out the year for internal ultra sounds and they are keeping an eye in it.  I have a small cyst on my left ovary that is remaining the same size and I actually got it when I was preganant but when I have this pain it's always on the right side and they never seem to be able to catch it before it burst.  They have seen it after it has burst and that's what they believe it is!
