Title: hip pain...
Post by: SouthSam7 on April 29, 2013, 03:02:14 am
I have had hip pain about a year now. It is getting so much worse lately. I'm 45. This week I've tried naproxen, aspirin, ibuprofen, lortab, salon-pas and tiger balm patches. Besides the lortab making me funky feeling, I still have the same, intense, excruciating aching pain in my hip. What can I do? Does anyone around my age or younger have this? It doesn't make sense to me. Thanks, Sam

I would go see an orthopedic doctor , its not uncommon for guys your age to get hip and joint pain , I did when I was your age . You are on the verge of becoming a senior citizen so it may help to find a doc who is experienced in treating older patients .

I have HIV-related arthritis. I guess it started a couple years ago but I wasn't sure what it was at the time, and it is fairly persistent in my knees and sporadic in my elbows, shoulder and lower back. I assume this is delayed payback for my body enduring 18 years of a detectable viral load and it causing inflammation issues, who knows.

Not sure if your hip pain is similar but that's what doctors are for. It's impossible for any of us here to know what it is you're experiencing.

No ... at 50 you get your AARP card and 45 - 50 is medically a turning point also where you start getting into geriatric medicine , it wasn't meant as an insult .

Im 26 and have experienced chronic hip pain since i was 14. I recommend seeing an ortho doc and also doing some light stretching of the psoas and adductors (inner thighs). doing some exercises that utilise minor hip flexion, extension and external rotation to keep the joint mobile will probably help some. before you do anything major, see a doctor though to make sure that stretching and mild exercise will help. yoga could definitely be a good option for you. also taking a few pilates classes to really strengthen the pelvic floor and the obliques (two muscle groups that work to stabilize the hips)

before anyone starts talking about how crazy it is that i have chronic hip pain at my age or attempts to discredit my advice, let me just say that i have seen multiple orthos, and PTs, i've been a classical ballet dancer since i was 3 (hence the cause of pain) and I am currently a pilates instructor and personal trainer who specializes in special population rehabilitation.

Thanks, everyone. I will bring it up with my team soon but my care in Atlanta pretty much sucks.

Any home remedies/over the counter treatment I can try in the meantime? Texannynnyc I will try your suggestions, too.

Glucosamine is good for joint issues. If no OTC pain meds are working i dont really know what else to tell you except for maybe looking into some homeopathis remedies, alternating heat/ice, etc.

I have arthritis in my hip and it can be very painful at times . When I wake in the morning I always have to grab the mattress and pull myself over and hobble out of bed . I have found that a hot shower and then some walking helps get me get going .

And Texan , I have had chronic back problems since I was 10 so Im not going to doubt you for a minute . It seems some of us are genetically predisposed for these conditions .

I've been having on and off hip pain for the last 5 years or so.  (right around the 45 year mark.....).  My doc sent me for an MRI to rule out Avascular necrosis -- which can happen in us pozzies -- depending on meds.  That came up negative -- and showed only the slightest bit of arthritis.  I then went and had a few sessions with a therapist who does AIS (Active Isolated Stretching) -- it did wonders.  Went years without pain.  Of course, I stopped doing the stretching myself and a couple years ago, my hip acted up while we were in Paris -- it was so bad that I could not really walk -- fortunately, it was our last day of vacation.  When we got back, I went and had 3 sessions of the stretching -- bingo -- all better.

So....  stretching could be your friend -- but it wouldn't hurt to have other things ruled out.

Interestingly, to me anyway, is that the pain only ever occured when walking or sitting.  I play tennis a few times a week and have never had my hips interfere.

Good luck!
Mike

My case too....as I said on the other post:
Have you considered  Plasma Rich Platelet Therapy or "Orthokin" ( Google it ) therapy for the ongoing arthritis ? By my humble opinion highest numbers of CD3 cells are also linked to a prolonged inflammation processes in the body , and most of us here , especially "oldies" have high CD3 count , and reversed CD3/CD4 and CD3/CD8 ratio.I have also heard that cinnamon , turmeric , and the peppers help a lot along with omega 3 oil. There is also strange receipt with golden raisins and gin on the net - so why not try it.

This is exactly what I'm learning about my body -- I really have to focus on stretching, and perhaps even periodic brush-ups with a physical therapist. Some folks think it's all hokey and just want to pop a pill but that's not a long-term solution for most people, excepting those with chronic pain issues. (Though I think my feet won't sort themselves out so not sure where that will go, but everything from the ankles to the hips really helps)

I would do all I can to get this medically checked out , I have seen the benefits folk get from [extreme end off interventions /problem ] hip replacement its a joy seeing and hearing there new found ease off movement.

At the same time physiotherapy and Pilates are a Fantastic intervention for anyone struggling with pain. Pain makes you scrunch up your entire body and this can lead to secondary problems as the muscle groups are forcing the bone structure into a painfull shape. .

I can greatly reduce all over body ache/pain by half an hour off stretching exercises taught to me by a Physiotherapist.

Push your med team for the referrals you need , 45 is the younger end but HIV is an aging condition .

All the best
Michael

I have recently benefited from stretching . Its something I used to avoid because I was prone to injure myself for the reasons Theyer talked about . I had some muscles that were severely locked up for lack of a better term ... so when I would try to stretch it put stress in other areas and that almost always resulted in further injury .

I now use an inversion table and it helps me avoid injury while stretching all the muscle groups at once . I'm sure it can be done without this table but that is how I learned the benefit of a good stretch .
