Good evening,
Ladies I have a stupid question?  Is HIV or my medicine going to mess with my period?  I was diagnosed positive a month ago, so I am still getting used to my medicine.  Other then some upset stomach every now and then, and being tired more the medicine hasn't been to bad.

Hi Kitty, welcome to the forums.

It's not a stupid question.

I've never heard of the meds messing with anyone's periods, but this is one of those areas where there has not been much research done. I've not heard any first-hand accounts directly related to the meds.

However, I have known a few women where it seemed that hiv itself affected periods, myself included. Women who become very ill before diagnosis sometimes see their periods stop, but this can happen with any serious illness and usually rectifies itself when the meds are taken and health is restored.

In my own case and that of some other women I've known, hiv seems to sometimes make periods heavier. This is what happened to me - and I'm not on meds. I will have been poz for fourteen years this coming spring, but I still don't need meds.

I had problems with endometriosis long before I became poz, but this was fixed with laser surgery and hormone therapy a few years before my infection. A few years after I'd been infected, my periods started getting heavier and heavier - much worse than they ever were when I had endometriosis. It got to the point where I had to have a Mirena coil fitted (an IUD type coil that is also impregnated with hormones that usually stop periods). It never did stop my periods completely, but they are very light now. When I told my GYN doc about this, he said it just goes to show how heavy my periods were and how heavy they still would be if I hadn't had the coil fitted. Only a very small percentage of women with this coil do not experience total cessation of their periods.

Anyway, it was only though conversations with other poz women that I came to realise that hiv was the probable cause of my heavy periods, because it seems to be fairly common in poz women, particularly ones not on meds. When I asked my hiv doc about it, he said he knew of no studies done on the subject, but did have quite a few women in his practice who had this problem and admitted there was a likely connection.

But,  don't worry about this unless it happens to you. It isn't something that will definitely happen and if it does, there are things you can do to make it better. In the meantime, there's no point in worrying about it.

How are you doing otherwise with your new diagnosis? I'm glad to hear you're adjusting well to the meds. The first year of so of diagnosis can be a real emotional roller-coaster but hang in there, it does get better in time. Today is my tenth anniversary of being diagnosed and I'm doing fine. (In hindsight I know I was infected in the spring of '97, but wasn't diagnosed until Feb 22, 2001) You'll be marking your tenth anniversary before you know it too.

Hugs,
Ann

 Ann,
Thank you for your response.  I am basically doing good with my diagnosis.  I know who I got it from, and can probably even tell what year I was infected.

I have good support with my mom, her husband and my grandma.  Grandma told me I was being punished  by God but to cry on shoulder whenever I wanted to.  She has Alzheimers so I am just glad she knows who I am.  Her smart ass remarks I just ignore.

I was laid off 2 months ago . so had to move in with my dad and his wife.  Not so much support there, their thinking is sweep it under the rug and don't tell anyone.  But I gave my dad a list of websites to look at so we will see if that changes any of their thinking.

My numbers are good.  When I was diagnosed Jan. 20 my CD4 was 38 and my VL was 125,400.  Got my tests back today my CD4 is up to 65 and my VL is down to 189.  I did not think my VL would come down so far when I started my medicine.  My doctor told me not to worry to much about the CD4, that the VL is more important.  I'm doing good on Truvada and Isentress, the Bactrim DS is another story.  I can't take it with my second dose of Isentress or I puke.  I have to take them about half an hour apart.  I lost 35 lbs in a month and half, but gained 2lb. back.  I was trying to lose weight just not like this.

I found out I can't hold up a motorcycle yet.  But I will look good in a little leather top, all I need is the guy with a bike.

I have lots of other questions, but sometimes am finding the answers on the other forum sites.  I also have a list of big words to look up, and some initials to figure what they mean.  Should have paid attention to my science teacher.

there are no support groups in my area, I will probably have to go to Philly, if I have to drive 2 hours then I will.  Oh yea how do you get one of those smiley to show up where you write at?

Welcome. If you want to share some of your big words and initials/acronyms here, we can help you.
As to the smiley/non-smiley faces, when you're writing your replies, look right above the white block in which you're writing and 16 of their adorable expressions are there for the choosing.  :) Just click on one ;) and it will automatically insert itself :D into the sentence you are writing ;D  TA DA. Then, when your messages posts, the graphic will be visible as a smiley face instead of code.  >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'(  I've never done that, pardon my fun.

Oh yes, third shift sucks and is so hard on the body clock! But employment offsets the suckiness. That means you were just called back! Congrats!

Good Evening,
Well I guess morning.  I made it to work last night, started at 10:30pm and passed out around 12:30.  So they sent me home.  I've been coughing alot the past two days, and today my chest hurt whenever I would lay down or stand up.  I figured it was from all the coughing, so when I got home I took some of that nasty cough syrup >:(  with codeine in it to help with my coughing.
I have to call my doctor tomorrow (well today) and get a clearance from him to go back to work.  But thanks to mr. codeine I will sleep good tonight and tomorrow, which is more then I've done the past 2 nights.
I have been to the doctors more in the past month then I ever have, this really bites and I hate being sick.
I was doing ok on not being to tired, and I didn't lift anything, well I lifted one box and none after that.
We shall see what tomorrow night brings, if I'm still getting dizzy i'm not giong in.
Ok my rant and rave is done.
The nice thing was my job had someone drive me home in my car and someone else followed us to take him back to work, and they got paid for it.
Have a good night, day, afternoon, whatever it is at 2am. 8)

Glad to learn you're going to call your doctor! Any chance you've got pneumonia? We'll look forward to you letting us know what the doctor says, meanwhile take good care.

Supposedly I am over my pneumonia, my step-mom asked if it could be coming back?  I told I guess it could, although I wasn't sure since I am still on bactrim. Apparently will be on that for awhile since I am unable to get a flu or pneumonia shot.  I did notice that my thrush has started to make a comeback.
Called the Dr. and he was out, but his asst told me to start taking my cough syrup again. She said my chest hurting is probably from coughing, and getting dizzy could just be from not standing and working for a few months.
I should take baby steps going back to work, but their policy is everything or nothing. There is no light duty or half days.   I took off work last night so I could take it all day and night.  my job has very strict rules about taking anything with codeine.  If I work I can only take 1 dose, this way I can take more.  I did notice my throat hurts, I put that down to the coughing.
Of course I didn't notice the thrush until after they were closed, I'm going to start taking that medicine again.  I was taking all this medicine before so I see nothing wrong with taking thrush medicine again,  Doc will be back in office on Monday and I'm to call and let them know how weekend went.
Grandma being my grandma scolded me for trying to ride my dirt-bike.  I told her not to worry I wouldn't try it again until spring,( she's such a hoot,) 10 minutes later she's asking me to take her for ride when I get a bike in the spring.
I shall see how works goes tonight when I go in.
