Title: summer into fall...
Post by: Miss Philicia on September 05, 2013, 04:01:02 pm
Folks, I am pleased to announce that the National Weather Service has formally issued the first frost and freeze advisories of the season for the Northeast to occur Friday morning. Northern Maine all the way down to north-central Pennsylvania.

Even where I live from right now to next morning it will plummet 40 degrees.

I was just about to post the same thing. It's going to get down to the mid 40's here for the next two nights. Brrr... :(
It can really screw up the ripening all of my green tomatoes. >:(
On a pleasant note, today was beautiful. Low humidity and temp in the upper 70's.
I noticed it was supposed to get to 98 in SA.

I'm thinking it's going to be a good year here too due to the fairly regular rain we have been having. Not too much, not too little.
I wonder what happened to all of those predicted hurricanes we were supposed to have this year. It's about peak season now.

Gosh that's a huge drop
London also temp drop and rain tomorrow, both off which I welcome.

Fall is probably my favorite season.  You get the beautiful sunsets, where you get the beautiful purples, blues, and oranges in the sky.  The sun is at a lower angle and you don't have all the ground level pollution.  There are the festivals--we have the Boubon Festival coming up.  Oh, the beautiful leaves.  Do I sound like an NPR show?

The downside is the earlier sunsets.  Our latest sunset is 9:10pm around the summer solstice.  Today, it is 8:06pm.  When we fall back in November, it will be worse.

Has it been a hot summer for you or just a need for a cool down? I always thought the summer season in London was pretty short.

Oh, the beautiful leaves.  Do I sound like an NPR show?

Yes. Do you enjoy Schweddy Balls? (SNL reference) :)

edited to add link for the few who may not have seen it.

Sunset is 7:25pm here tonight. I think it's because where Tedderz lives it's the very westernmost part of the Eastern Time Zone. It changes to Central time just 40 miles (?) west of him.

We have had the most beautiful summer, temps between 75-85 and sunny almost every day.  The day after Labor day queue the rain.  Supposed to get two inches today and some flooding :(

I'm bummed that shorts weather is over.  Fall is nice but I don't want summer to end.

At least we aren't as low as you in the northeast, that sounds chilly.

In fairness, I'm a full 150 miles away from the nearest frost warnings. :) We didn't have our first proper freeze in the city until Nov. 6th last year. Our daily highs will stay in the 80's and 70's until the beginning of October.

Yes, we are on the tail end of eastern time.  We can drive about 40 miles south and run into Central.  When G.E. came to town in the 50's, they pushed the state to put Louisville on Eastern, so we would be on the same time as their headquarters in Connecticut.  That's what I read in the paper, anyway.

Mitch, I did get the SNL reference.  One of their best.

Its been a wonderful Summer in London , if you forget the days off heat low cloud and pollution. Which we tend to do as soon as two hot blue sky days fall on us.

I was v.lucky while London went through 3 weeks off humid hot and polluted wether in June I enjoyed Orkney at its best.

Our wether is so changeable that after a spell off consistency most off us develop a hankering for the opposite. Today being an example , its cool grey and wet , after the sun I welcome it. If it goes on for a week I will hate it.

It would take a long time for me to adjust  to Southern heat. I hate air con .The hottest wether I ever experienced was August in Marrakesh . The train from Tangiers arrived 5am after sleeping I left the hotel noonish . I made two steps in the full sun ,retreated back to the hotel , my lungs felt like I had inhaled fire .

Rest and eat

My sister stopped by the other night indicating she needed a huge favor.  I was like, please, don't let it be anything to do with the well, since I already replaced all that.   she simply wanted an inhaler.  That wasn't huge and we only cuddled for a while.   >:(

It's not mobile since it's on a foundation.  lol  The squatters should be out any day now.  By Thursday, we're taking deputies to forcefully eradicate them.  I rec'd the deed yesterday along with a copy of a past due sewer bill.  It states that it must be paid by the 15th or it will be placed as a lien as property taxes.  Really pissing me off that I'm paying for illegal tenants to squat and shit.  :(

It was 97F here in Hoosierville, on Tuesday.  I couldn't hardly stand to go from car to apartment. Yesterday it was 91F.  And of course we always have the humidity problem.  Right now, at 4:15 am, it's 72F.  But supposed to be much cooler than the past two days.

Still in the 90's here in West Florida, and it looks as though it will stay that way for a week.  The Gulf is still 86 degrees.

The nights are cooling down into the mid to low 70's and the humidity is slowly starting to drop. I can feel a little fall in the air. Can't wait for it to start getting into the 60's, -- got a while to go !

But, November through March make it more than worth it.... Although, I don't venture out unless I am going from A/C apartment, to A/C car, to A/C bar or wherever else I end up....

I pulled my coat out as soon as I got back from Florida.  ;D

Today it is a chilly 70 degrees.

Tomorrow I am taking Poncho for a walk at Tucquan Glen.  It's a hiking trail that follows a creek.  Since he thinks that water is the best thing in the world he can walk in the creek, and if I am up to it we can end up at the Susquehanna river.  I figure it will probably be the last time for water walks until next year :'( .

It is nice to be able to go outside and not be hit in the face with humidity.  Got to turn off the a/c and open the windows.  Put a fan in the window and had to turn it off, as it got down into the 40's here last night.  It's about 70 degrees here now.

We were going to go today and look for an outdoor propane heater, that isn't too expensive.  I've seen some that look like real ones with logs, instead of those kind you see at restaurants.

We have seen some mid 50 nights here but all in all it was a very strange summer with lower than normal temps and more rain than I can ever remember . Jan asked me more than a few times if the weather was typical , it isn't . We had blinding rain storms several times a day and weeks of almost constant drizzle . The plus side is my yard that I damaged with too much weed and feed a few years ago is almost back to where it was before .

I cant rake leaves anymore , its too painful . I use a mulching mower to chop them up , it works great . I did get some odd looks from neighbors when I started doing it that way but some of them are doing to now .

I have no trees, therefore I do not rake. I haven't raked a leaf in thirty years.

Suckers.

ps: frost advisories up for tonight a mere eighty miles away

I don't rake either-my landlord's yard employees do that.

I love sleeping in this cool weather-41F last night.  However, with menopause, I've been waking up in the middle of the night, soaked in sweat (reminder anyone).  And that, my friends, is miserable. >:(

I used to pay the neighbor boys $5 to rake, but they've grown up now and realize I've been jipping them all these years so they've raised their rates to $50 which is a lot since I really only have 1 tree now.

Honestly, you should be ashamed. I got more for raking leaves than $5 back in 1975. Guys like you should be sterilized.

And seriously -- one tree in a yard? I bet your lawn basically consists of weeds and your shrubs look like a dog with mange.

That would work if our entire yard wasn't covered with these damn swamps maples.  Luckily, I managed to get one cut down so hopefully it won't take as long this year.

2 years ago, I spent 2 entire days getting ready for Winter.  Bagging and cleaning and totally exhausted.  I came into shower after obtaining a beautiful, leaf free yard.  My idiot neighbor behind me saw me working my ass off to get rid of the debris.

I happened to glance out the window and he was using a leaf blower, blowing his leaves under our shared fence into our yard.  I became enraged and promptly returned the favor.  It was like a battle of blowers.  :)

Boy it's been amazing weather! While we have not been having unusual heat, we also have not had many cold nights. Tomato season lives on! Picked another 20 big ones in the past 6 days with more to come. We do live about 7 miles south of a closed nuclear plant with spent fuel buried in casks so maybe the residual heat and radiation might be playing a factor here?

10 day forecast? sunny. highs in the 70's. lows in the 50's and 60's. I'm sure we will pay for it soon.

Anyway, the leaves seem to be turning early. Maybe due to such a dry September.

Wanted to share a couple of pics of the Korean Dogwood in our front yard. They produce neat looking fruits about an inch in diameter. Beautiful day AND night. :)

I thought October was suppose to be our driest month, but I'm gonna have to build an ark.  We got 5 inches of rain last week.  Now, we are getting hit hard again.  My udometer (rain gauge for those who didn't google the actual name like I did) was tippy top full.  Since Friday evening, we've gotten 8 inches here at our house.  Suppose to get up to 3 more through Monday.  The pond is overflowing.  I'm wondering whether I need to pull water out.  The fish are literally level with the ground.  I'm worried they may come out.

But to show you all that my South Texas yard can in fact sustain life I present to you my Honeysuckle Bush...the smell is amazing in the mornings when I walk out, and since it is only 65 right now I have the windows open so I can get the aroma in the house :)

Could have fooled me about fall. Just returned from the east coast, absolutely gorgeous weather. Visited my Mom and a couple of siblings in Vermont and New Hampshire where the weather was 70-75 during the day and 40ish at night. Perfect weather. Spent four days on the Vineyard and again perfect weather. Helped my brother put up the framing for a post and beam guest house, scalloped (nasty) mopeded around and acted like little kids. Got back to San Diego and yesterday it was 91 downtown! Heading to the beach today!

Wonderful Technicolour Autumn day in London today and I made the most off it, by first tumbling off my wagon after coffee with x , my purveyor off fine complimentary  herbal remedies. The dog and I tottered to the hole in the wall and headed for Battersea Park. The low bright sun was like what some photographers call the 'Golden Hour" the last hour of full sun at the end off the day.

Grimy orange shop canopy sizzled, the yellow road markings looked brand new , with rain yesterday the roads and buildings had less dust so brick colours where more defined. The Park with early autumn shone, the Glass high rises through the trees sometimes flashed  the sun and the grass was emerald.

The dog raced through undergrowth trying to scare up creatures , returning when called to make sight contact then rushing off again. In the middle off Battersea Bridge the wind had nothing blocking it so you got to feel the weather also , by the time I got to The Lister Hospital I was knackered and was wavy on my feet so bus home.

Beautiful woman in deep Yellow wool wrap coat and Jet Black the rest walked past trailing a average weeks wage off perfume , delicious .

Back at 3 have slept till 8 pm.

Still running the AC, but I've noticed it's turning on a lot less each day.

The highest electric bill we've had this summer was $89.00. Not to shabby.  Once the AC is shut down the bill will drop to about 55.00 a month, for the rest of the winter.

Last winter, we only turned on the heat a few times, we'll see what this winter brings.

Currently it is 73 degrees. We had some rain early this morning,( around 4:00AM) but the temps are going to drop by Thursday night//Friday morning.

I'm ready for the cooler weather !   :P

All those years in Brooklyn and all those years in ratty student apartments in other old cities, never had the option of turning on or off the heat.  Funny Im in the same set up in Switzerland.  Steam radiators.  One time I had a stingy landlord when I was living in the brownstone she owned and lived in too.  Radiators getting hot finally in late November. Used to bake a lot.  The apartment I had before that was classic slum heating - or at least thats the urban legend in NY.  Meaning it was FULL BLAST hot house heat all winter. With the windows open in snow storms heat. It was a colossal waste of energy but it was kinda sensual and also anyone could smoke and the apartment wouldn't stink up.  The legend I learned was this kept the poor from rioting in our crappy lodgings..  I dunno if thats true....
I have many comforters and also use a down mattress pad.

We have freeze warnings tonight and tomorrow night.  And, our furnace needs replaced.  It wouldn't come on.  We were hoping it was the same problem we've had a couple times, where the igniter or sensor probe needed cleaning.  Well, the fire chamber or whatever it is has rusted through.  It would cost about $1,500 to fix.

It is 25 years old and we knew we would have to replace it soon.  They were surprised it lasted as long as it did.  I thought the furnace and a/c must be top of line, to last so long.  However, the furnace guy said they are builders grade.  He recommends replacing the a/c in spring, saying they work better when they are the same brand and technology.

So, $3,000 for the furnace and about $2,700 for the a/c, including labor.  Both carry a 10 year warranty.  If it can't be fixed, then they replace it.  They sell Westinghouse.  We need to replace the water heater at some point.  It is fine during the summer, but you run out of hot water in the winter.  We're hoping we will see energy savings.  We get reports from our gas and electric company.  It always says we use way more energy than similar homes in our area.  We had planned on replacing all the windows this fall.  I'm glad we didn't now.  Those will have to wait.

I agree, pre-Halloween snow is not desirable.  The snow is not really sticking, though I did have to scrape off my car yesterday morning before going to work.  It's supposed to get into the 50's next week, we'll see.  I hope it's a decent weather night on Halloween, because I have all this candy to get rid of.

Sadly 4 dead from the Storm that passed through Southern England , damage being added up , loads off dead wood will off been stripped from trees and this has a beneficial effect on woodlands.

Last one as big as this was in 1987, I had no idea it was occurring as I spent until 7.a.m in a basement in Clarkenwell, in a Club whose name refuses to surface. As my partner was performing in Brighton that night we got to Victoria and crashed out on the coach to Brighton. We woke up , the coach entering Brighton , to a scene off devastation . Trees down , snapped trunks , roads blocked and 2 very confused Gay blokes wandering WTF.

In fact its now a television piece off fame . 24 hour,s before the event Mr Michael Fish a well known weather presenter spoke to camera an stated---------   We are receiving inquiries at the Meteorological Center that a Hurricane is on its way. I am hear to say this not going to happen...........poor love , still appears when we have a hint off trouble, just hope he gets repeat Fees.

Did you attend the Choral stuff Miss P ?

I was born in Berkshire 7 miles from the Hampshire boarder . I'm not sure what you mean by "Choral stuff" but whatever, I was in Winchester attending this place (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/wsa) (special credit for Brian Eno being an alumnus). For an American, Winchester is very picture perfect for sure and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. Plus it was a convenient hour's train ride to London. Or I'd go down to Portsmouth and take the ferry to France.

Oh, and I was a "lodger" in a council flat so I got the whole English working class experience, plus my walk to school each day took me right by Winchester cathedral which is gorgeous.

Our first official NOAA freeze warning is for tonight. We are forecast to dip down to 31F and I've not even had to turn on my heater a single time yet this season, nor have I broken out my huge down comforter.

Here where I am in SC we have already had one occurrence (back in October) that briefly reached 32 but that was just before sunrise and was brief.  This past week our A.C. was going and this morning I noticed the heat kicked on around 4:30.  Tis the season and honestly, I am ready for a few cooler days.

I want to go get some steamed oysters and that is definitely a cold weather activity.

We had our first freeze early last week.  Killed most of my remaining flowers.  Here is something I've heard for the first time this year-- the weather folks are saying there will be no more freeze warnings, because the growing season is considered over after the first freeze.  Never heard that before.  Guess it makes sense.

Many from New York to Key West got a partial solar eclipse this morning.  A nice fall treat.  A total eclipse is will be at its best over Kentucky in 2017.

I guess the growing season is over.  But there is a fall to winter crop in Switzerland, though not sure exactly what...
Also there is  fall to early winter flower season.  Mums bloom through the freezes, and heathers too.  Giant cyclamens also.
Swiss towns seem to have a lot of money and have 3 seasons of flowers in public gardens. And 4 seasons of dressing the flower beds..  It always seems so extravagant to me but I love it.  Now they are putting in the spectacular mums in about half the beds. The others they plant with the things that over winter - the spring bulbs, but already all the pansies and stuff.  The mums will come out in mid December.  All the winter beds will be dressed with pine branches over the pansies and wallflowers, and other flowers I don't know the names of.

There are geraniums in some protected southern windows that survive the whole winter, snow and all..

Saw this tonight.  He said this is just one model, but said not the only one showing snow for next Thursday, the 14th.  Although, he said most think this is way out of line, but said some place from Ohio to Pennsylvania will probably see some accumulating snow.  We shall see.  The earliest accumulation I remember here happened just two years ago on thanksgiving.  We got about 2 inches.  It wasn't forecasted and we didn't even know it had snowed, until we left to go home from dinner.

That's a frightening map! Next Thursday is a long way away. A light dusting might be nice.

Tonight, Mr. Weatherman gave a look at both the GFS and Euro models.  Haven't the Euro models been more accurate in the last few years?

So, the GFS model has drastically changed from last night.  We will see whether either are correct and which is more accurate.

check out my radar this morning (http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/pennsylvania/weather-radar?play=1)

FIRST SNOW FLURRIES, 36F @ 9:31am I think it went down to 28F a few hours ago.

( also in East Haddam! (http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/connecticut/weather-radar?play=1) )

Two more nights of chilly temps and then a slight return to normal temperatures for mid-November, but then cold nights return again this time next week. Two weeks away for Thanksgiving definitely looks to be chilly.

The snow was coming down at a pretty good rate earlier here but nothing stuck. We still have leaves to rake. The two huge magnolia trees held onto there leaves much longer that usual.
Kenny better get the snow blower tuned up. Mechanical thingies are above my pay grade.

Well this sucks; I wasn't able to get all the damned leaves raked and now we have a coating of snow.  The grass barely survived last year as I wasn't able to rake due to my leg injury.

Oh well, will soon be able to build snow forts at the new place and have a bonfire party.

Going to 23 here.  And, that would be lower had they not moved the official thermometer to the airport.  It use to be out in the suburbs, away from all the concrete and steel.

It was a big debate here, with many saying it would throw things off and make us look like we are having higher temps in summer and winter, than in years past.  We also debate more interesting things as well.  Actually, it will throw things off, if someone is looking at average temps in 2000 over 2013, without knowing it was moved.  There is usually a 5 degree difference.
