Favorite movies to watch on summer nights?
« on: August 13, 2012, 02:27:21 pm »
Doing a little cycle of movies that seem great on summer nights.

So far these were good:

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
(so many creepy scenes and its absolutely horrifying at the end on the beach.)

A Summer Place
(endless melodramatic dialogues about changing sexual morality all heated up.)

A Place in the Sun
("the most beautiful couple ever" - Taylor and Clift.  The long symphonic scene on the mountain lake in the boat is horrifying and creepy the way you can feel sometimes in the wilderness in the summer. The music is gorgeous)

A Place for Lovers (1968) - very trashy and bad but super chic "euro art film" with Dunaway traipsing around palladian villas and the Italian alps.

The Parent Trap (1961)
Friday the 13th
1990 - (Berolucci)
La Dolce Vita
Morrissey's Heat
Woodstock
Dazed and Confused

Your favs for summer?
Particularly - any classic horror films that are great for summer nights?
And what are your favorite concert films?

Alien series.
They are scary as hell, even today.

So I prefer "The fifth element" and "Dogma".

Oh and please be sure to watch "Equilibrium", because as long as you didn't see that movie your soul is missing a piece.

The neat side affect of my last illness is that I get to watch all the oldies for the first time again.   ;D

Stopped by the library today and picked up a few videos.

Watched "Angels in America" this morning, getting ready to watch "A River Runs Through It".  Both of these movies played a large role in the AMG memorial service this year so I wanted to rewatch them for the first again.

I also picked up "I love you Phillip Morris" and "An Early Frost".

Do this with Travis Barker in the scenario imagined by Denb in the American Horror thread.  Oh I just googled Travis Barker naked - big, real and nasty!  Much better than that Cheez-it photo of Levine in Cosmo.

And speaking of corn, I'm gonna watch this Summer Lovers.  Equilibrium sounds like a go - Christian Bale - YES - but is there something summery about this?

Nope, there is not.
Still, it is worth a night. Christian is hot, and he acts very well in Equilibrium.

Well I couldnt resist Bale and watched it last night.  The theme was moving and he was hot.
Magic Mike came out in Europe and saw that tonight.  Amazing, druggy, sexy, summer movie. It's really psychedelic!  Every location shot is piss colored, and there are so many trippy edits.  The guys are gorgeous except Mathew McConaughey who is nightmare sleazy hot.  I think his character is right up there in cinema history with William Defao's Bobby Peru in David Lynch's Wild at Heart:

Thanks for that tip I thoroughly enjoyed this.  Its a great summer movie. The cheesy parts are pretty funny and I was surprisingly into the story of the three main characters.  Plus they were very pretty and the the island is so pretty too.  Also, love that funny scene on the yacht.  And I was expecting something different than the mother who showed up.  There are lots of good touches and little bits in the movie, too.  Even when the music is cheesy, it's perfect!

I also find it an interesting movie because of the timing, meaning it was in that all-too-brief moment right after The Death of Disco and the beginning of the 80's AIDS scare.

I get you about being Pre-AIDS, but disco never died especially in summer resorts like this!
And I went to discos all through the 80's.
It was a shock to see how young and thin both actors were. The archeologist I don't recognise.  She was pretty too.

Gallagher's face has its good and bad angles.  But all together they both looked picture perfect American.

I thought it has a lot of light touches.  It was too funny he wasn't into the hot wax. It was cute when he did his quick strip on the beach and got right on his tummy.

I was cooking a bit and didn't notice if the women finally did each other or if it was always them doing him?  Was there a lesbian kissing scene I missed?

I didn't really buy the ending.  So she lures them back for 3 more weeks?  Oh well, she's in for some heartache!

The archeologist woman was Valérie Quennessen, and she died of cancer 8 years after making that movie.

Computer says no.... Motorcycle accident.  Oh, and computer says, brought to you by the director of that giant of classic cinema cheese - The Blue Lagoon!
Anyway, its an odd film - much more enjoyable than it should be, all things considered. :)
