Title: Crisco Disco: Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me?
Post by: Bucko on August 12, 2007, 03:32:30 pm
Damn Auntie Doxie! I've been lost in Discoland for three hours now, but I found some great stuff in the cobwebby recesses of my mind (with a little help from YouTube, natch).

Real Crisco Disco wasn't Saturday Night Fever, it was more the soundtrack to countless Tea Dances and hours spent on one's knees in the backroom bars of the 70s. It was popping a Quaalude while sipping Mimosas on a deck in PTown and passing the hashpipe.

It was the last time Urban black culture really embraced the gay community and vice versa (at least until AD & Queen Akasha). As we lived in the same inner-city neighborhoods, that's not really so surprising. But as the hot carefree Summer afternoons of the 70s were replaced by the cold and bleak Morning in America of Reagan's polarizing politics, a chance was lost to build a real common-ground of understanding and solidarity.

It was also the last time European popular culture had any real impact on the American scene.

Here are some of the best:

I'm a FIRM believe in the power of more underground disco... things that generally came out on Prelude and Salsoul record labels (for a start).  Oh, and ANYTHING with Patrick Cowley's name on it (and of course he was one of the earliest queens to depart the room with AIDS).  Peter Brown is excellent, and of course Instant Funk was one of Salsoul's biggest acts along with LOLEATTA.  Harold Melvin is homegrown goodness from here in Philadelphia, key to the Gamble & Huff Philadelphia Int'l sound (best though is MFSB's "Love is the Message").

I still maintain an extensive vinyl collection of all of these labels fortunately.

I've tried to draw lines carefully. I was thinking Village People's San Francisco, not In The Navy.

You're exactly right that it was the Underground Sound that really exemplified Crisco Disco. And with the primitive recording equipment available at the time, anybody could sound like the big guy's quality. But it was only the independent producers that went so far out on a limb to create dance music that was simultaneously Urban and gaygaygay.

Maybe Grace Jones crossed the line, but I lover her.

You must include Sister Sledge. I've have spent all afternoon on a melancholy trip down Castro Street. My arms wrapped around my first lover as we partied away the weekend celebrating our first Castro Street Fair. Sylvester performed with Two Tons of Fun, later to become the Weather Girls.

I downloaded it to my computer from the disc. It's one of my favorites, absolutely. Unfortunately none of the more obscure songs from the disc are posted on YouTube. I've looked.

But this is very close to the spirit. We used to call this "head music":

The Skatt Bros always reminds me of backrooms in leather bars. It just has that sound.

Cheryl Lynn's first album ruled my world for several months:

As did Kraftwerk's Man Machine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXa9tXcMhXQ

The Savanna Band was must-have.:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_hPr4-J2EA

One of life's little mysteries is why, when they are re-releasing every belch and fart ever issued from Hairrock, they have kept their third album in in the vaults since 1979. It was called Dr Buzzard's Original Savanna Band Goes to Washington.

Majorly... and it was dear.  It defined that "Saint" genre known as "sleaze."

"He's got a rod beneath his coat/gonna ram right down your throat/make you grovel on the floor/spit, bump, and scream and beg for more."

You guys are drivin' me nuts.  Brings back so many memories of the 70s, when I went out dancing three times a week (in NYC):  Flamingo, 12 West, Paradise Garage,The Saint, Fire Island Ice Palace, etc.  Two of my all-time faves are already here:  Odyssey, "Native New Yorker," and Dr. Buzzard, "Cherchez la Femme."  Here's another one:  Chaka Khan, "Papillon (Hot Butterfly)."

I'm crying a little, too, because I can't help remembering that all of my dance partners from that era are gone.

The incomparable David Ruffin (died too young from a drug overdose), with the classic "morning-music sleaze" 100% soul-disco masterpiece, "Walk Away from Love."  Listen for the falsetto at 1:30 and 3:45--still gives me chills (once again, ignore lousy video):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DreRsMyQnCo

This is a great site for listening to actual 45- and 60-minute tapes of DJs' live sets.  I suggest starting with Jim Burgess's sets from 12 West and Roy Thode's from Paradise Garage and the Ice Palace:

Thanks for that last link... will check them out.  See lots of other goodies aside from Burgess (who also remixed Candi Stanton's 12" mix of "Young Hearts among many, many others...)  MAJORLY sucks that these are in Real Media format.

I actually just bought a CD compilation of old Tom Moulton remixes the other day.

Ah...Tom Moulton.  Invented everything:  the disco mix, the disco break, 12" disco singles.  And was so pretty, a former model.  One could say he literally invented disco itself, at the old Sandpiper in Fire Island Pines.  He's still around, the goddess bless him.

I Feel Love by Donna Summer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8TBmeK9Abg

I remember my friend Terry & I would actually get down and roll on the floor & simulate being in the throws of orgasmic ecstacy to this song at the Barracks in Memphis to this song.  Yes, we scared a few people.  When Missing Persons were popular they came to Memphis on Tour. After their concert the band went to the bar. This song played that night while they were there. Terry Bozio got down on the floor and joined us.  Those were the good old days!

From one who was burping babies during those days, can't help thinking this thread should become a new Forum section! It's SO FINE!

How about Evelyn "Champagne" King "I Don't Know If It's Right" and "Shame"? Heard it recently on radio and had to go out and get the CD.

I linked to "Shame" up there, and I know that I saw "I Don't Know" also on youtube.  Awesome songs.

Nice thread. At the time of disco, I was just a princess. You all pretty much covered the songs of the time but am wondering why no one mentioned Patrice Rushen or Teena Marie. I really wasn't up on Kraftwerk til the 80's I think when they did, "Tour de France" and "Numbers".

I remember that my Mom's best friend was a gay man who dressed in drag, named Paul. He was one bad bitch and most straight men thought twice before saying some ignorant shit to him. I still see him every now and then. I have never been raised to be homophobic and has had several friends over the years who was gay. I think it is sad that nowadays most black men seem to be homophobic but then it makes me wonder why, maybe because they themselves are curious and think they may be called on it, who knows. But I do miss those days, they were the most enjoyable even though I was young.

I'm wishing I could find a version of Prince's ''I Wanna Be Your Lover" which would be a nice addition to this thread- neatly fitting in the groove with a funk/R&B bent.

And as an offering to my Queen.

Even though the Queen has that song, I accept your offering. I think the song that goes with this thread is Jack U Off, which is off the Controversy LP...

I was a bit young during the disco era, having been born in 1966, but that didn't keep me from loving it.  I've still got many 12" disco records.  One of my all-time favorites was Amii Stewart's version of Knock on Wood www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm1kxdv-Xio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm1kxdv-Xio).  I have lots of fun gay albums from that era, as does my hubby  So many times I've been asked why I keep 'em, considering I only play each one maybe once every 2 years, and that I should get rid of them.  My answer is that if I did, and I ever wanted to play them again, like once every two years, where would / could I find them?  I've got several Donna Summer LP's, including Bad Girls (double album), Anita Ward's Ring My Bell single, and so many more.  I've even got a few cassettes from back in the day (1979) of what I used to call "my disco collection".  Fortunately, I recorded them on high quality (at the time) TDK SA tapes on a nice tape deck, and they still sound about the same now as they did then.  I discovered a treasure a few months ago - an immaculate B&O (Bang and Olufsen) turntable at a surplus sale for $8.  This was THE one back then, before CD's.  At over $800, there was no way I could afford it, as i was more interested in saving for a car (I wasn't quite 16).  That, or the old Technics turntable, are just the thing for an evening / afternoon of take-me-back music fun.

In a lot of ways, I wish I had been older then.  I loved disco but was WAY too young to go out to any clubs, not that there were any fun discos in Raleigh, NC.  I'm sure if I had been older, I probably wouldn't be alive today.  So, I do what I can to enjoy them... drag out those old LP's, 10" and 12" singles, cassettes, and open-reel tapes I made and enjoy.  If I ever want to feel young, all it takes is a few of those old songs and I'm back in the '70's.  What a fun thread, Brent!

Having had the experience of living through the Elivis Presley era, with Connie Francis and Anette Funicello...big hair, hair hoppers and then witnessing the ironed out staight hair era of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan which in the 60's turned into a pot and hash haze with the Greatful Dead , Mama Cass Eliot, and the Iron Butterfly, Janis Jophlin and the  Mothers of Invention ...... imagine the horror generated by disco.  My god its the end of an era....and of course it was. Kids wanted big hair again and lots of stylish tailored clothes and dance floors that lit up and pulsed to the music.  Then it was punk...oh u know ....Sid Viscious types in NYC who thumbed their noses at the disco bunnies and wore ragged clothes from thrift shops.LOL.......It just goes around and around and around.
I have my vinyl from ALL of those eras.

The Disco Sucks movement was a resurgence of the angry-white-guy bullshit that seemed part and parcel with the rise of Ronald Reagan. I remember it only too well.

I stood in line like every other faggot in Boston in the fall of 1978 to see Laura Mars. I remember the Mad Magazine parody, which was called "The Eyes Of Lurid Mess", which I had to buy although I'd long since traded Mad for Honcho.
