Title: Concom Broke while vaginal intercourse
Post by: stergios on August 28, 2008, 07:35:57 am
Hello to all.

Yesterday i had vaginal sex with a prostitute, using a condom. When i finished (pretty quick actually, 2 minutes max) i realised that the condom was completely broken with my top "head" of my penis being totally exposed.

I have a history of stress, so you can understand how i feel about the "waiting for 3 months to get tested" issue.

Now i cannot sleep, i'm avoiding my girlfriend because we have sex without condom for years now and how will I explain to her the "we should use condom" theory? I know that i shouldn't have sex with a prostitute while in relationship, but it was my 2nd time ever and wasn't thinking right..... i wanted something new for a change.....

What are my changes of infection? I know that you will tell me to get a test after X months, but i just need some extra information....

Thanks to all in advance!

Ster, you're right. You did have a risk, albeit a low level one. Until it broke the condom protected you. It was also only a single time and of short duration. HIV is not an easy virus to transmit and it is significantly harder to accomplish from female to male.

The odds against transmission having occured even IF the sex worker was HIV+ are overwhelmingly in your favor against it happening.

You can test at 6 weeks for a prelimenary result. At that point all but the smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will have done so. Assuming you get the negative result I expect, you still need to re-test at 13 weeks to confirm the earlier result. And yes, you should be using condoms with your girlfriend until  you have reliably tested negative.

Good luck with your tests.

Cheers,

stergios,

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus and more so from a woman to a man. You did the right thing by using a condom and you were protected up until the time it broke. This means the odds are in your favour of testing negative, but test you must.

You can get a good indication of your status at six weeks. The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by this time, with the average time to seroconversion being 22 days. A six week negative MUST be confirmed at three months, but is unlikely to change.

You would be wise to test for the other, more easily transmitted sexual infections as well. you can test for most of these ten days to two weeks after the event, or sooner if you develop a discharge from your penis.

Please read through all three condom and lube links in my signature line. A correctly used condom rarely breaks.

Thank you so much for your kind replies.

ok now, it get's more difficult.

My -partial- girlfriend has a little baby girl (9 months old) that still breast feeds. I am going to tell her, i have a heart don't worry. I know also that I'll destroy her psychology. Now i know that this "window" period is in purpose in order to pay for our mistakes. I'm going to pay for my mistake by loosing the one i love and by hurting her alot. But i prefer to hurt her this way and not by spreading the HIV on her.

Anyway thanks again

stergio,

Wrong. The purpose of the window period is to allow time for the body to develop antibodies to a virus. It isn't a punishment. Hiv is not a punishment, it's just a virus that sometimes infects people who engage in a universal human activity - unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse.

As we've told you, you have an excellent chance of testing hiv negative, but you must test at the appropriate time.

It's now 37 days since the incident occured.

Should i get tested in order to have some peace of mind, or it's still too early?

Thanks

It's to early to test.
