Title: is winter over yet?
Post by: mitch777 on February 25, 2013, 09:01:53 am
I am getting SO tired of winter. :(
Is there a way to push the FF button to May and then keep the planet on Pause? ???

Yes, winter is over! Our trees are starting to bud and we are awash in mid 70's weather here in South Texas

Wasn't the weather fabulous this past weekend, Will?  I got on my motorbike for a few hours yesterday, and rode up to Granger, Bartlett, and Salado.

Mitch, so sorry to hear you are trapped in cold and snowy weather.  :-*

is winter over yet?

Not quite yet !  :)  We've had the past two days with a lot of sea fog, that lasted until mid day before it burned off.

Caused some problems for Carnival @ the Port Of Tampa yesterday :

 8)

Today it's warm and muggy, about 80 degrees, weather is going to change tomorrow, with a 70 % chance of rain, And the rest of the week looks as though we will have a little cold snap.

http://www.baynews9.com/content/news/baynews9/weather/forecast.html

Then,..I think that will be it

Ok Time for a lesson so put your thinking cap on. Texas is a vast, big, beautiful, glorious state encompassing some 300,000 sq. miles, and is 900+miles across and has 10 climatic regions. Thus, while Amarillo may be seeing a blizzard. South Texas can be basking in glorious life giving sunlight and warmth. hallelujah.

In other easier words...Texas big. To put it into East coast perspective, Amarillo is 5 states away from San Antonio.  :-*

Way to go Wumpy (http://www.dallasnews.com/news/state/headlines/20130226-texas-panhandle-blizzard-dumps-record-snow-on-amarillo.ece) -- I mean "Texas"! ::)

The blizzard that hammered the nation’s midsection broke a 120-year-old record in Amarillo for one-day snowfall in February with 19.1 inches.

the width of a river at any one particular point doesn't tell the whole story.
the volume of water flow paints a different picture.

Our "little" river in our neck of the woods flows at 31,200 feet per second.  We swam across it once because it's only a 1/2 mile wide around Meigs County and about died.   :o  We ended up about 15 miles downstream from Ravenswood by the time we got across.

I am so ready for spring.  We never got a big snow, so I was disappointed.  If it isn't going to snow, then give me warm weather.  Over the wknd, it was 70 here.  But, now rainy and cold again.  It is suppose to warm again by this wknd, but suppose to get tons of rain.

Last year, it seemed like we didn't have much a winter.  We got so many landscaping projects done, because we had great weather beginning in February last year.  It is often hard to get much done, because we usually have a month of good weather before the heat hits.

Our average temp now is 55 degrees F.  Sunset is 7:47pm tomorrow.  We are on the very tail end of Eastern, so ya'll on the east coast had your sunset 30-40 mins earlier.  I lost track of time tonight, because it was still light out.

We're having crazy weather still.  Tshirt weather one day, and heavy jackets the next.  Now they're calling for freezing rain.

I love winter but am so ready for the sun.  I've not tanned all winter and hate this paleness.  Which reminds me, time to purchase a new tanning package.  I live a mere 2 blocks for the tanning center.

started my tomato seeds last week.
i only plant a few.
LOVE fresh home grown organic produce. :)
after many years, i have whittled the choice down to my 2 favorites.
"Brandywine" (heirloom variety, large, juicy, flavorful, YUM) and oddly enough,
i salvage seeds from the "Compari" tomatoes that i buy from the grocery store.
they average about 1 1/2" in diameter, have great flavor, and best of all they start producing early and heavy.
(usually get about 150-200 tomatoes from ONE plant!)
think i may need to put a light on the seedlings now to keep them from getting too spindly.
this spring has been SO slow in coming!

Oh...
i was outside the past 2 days doing a bit of pruning on the Japanese pussy willows.
they are beautiful.
very twisty-turny contorted.
i will need to post a pic for you to see. :)

City living limits your ability to grow your own.
understood.
I just HATE paying $3.00 for ONE good heirloom tomato.
I also like going out to my back yard, a mere 50 fifty feety from my house to pluck a juicy tomato off of the vine as needed. :)

We were there last February-- South Beach and Key West.  Been down every winter, since 2009.  Didn't make it this year.  It turned out okay, because the week we were planning to go, it was lousy weather down there.  Brian's spring break at school is the first week of April.  This weekend, we've been looking at flights.  We actually found some cheap ones at this late date.  $120 down and $85 back.  Since we didn't make a decision, I am sure those are gone.  Probably have to wait until next year.  We wanted to check out more of Ft. Lauderdale.  Some of you said it was actually much better than Sobe.
Title: Re: is winter over yet?

Fort Lauderdale is much better than SoBe - particularly Wilton Manors (practically an all-gay city)

Weather has been great this weekend... Today is supposed to reach the upper-80s with a bit of a wind to cool it down....

Also, Hollywood Beach is a lot more of a "down-to-earth" beach scene than SoBe - it isn't as pretentious - Great place to hang out and walk on the Beachwalk and take in the sites...A few good bars - O'Malley's, Ocean Alley....

But Wilton Manors has the Manor, Bill's Filling Station, Atomic Boom, Georgie's, Rosie's, Scandel, and a bunch of other bars/hangouts, plus a lot of gay-run and gay-friendly Bed and Breakfast places.

SoBe is nice to go to once in a while - but tends to be touristy, lots of traffic, horrible parking, more expensive, pretentious... and only has three real gay bars/clubs: Twist, Palace, and Score.... although, there are some great restaurants (especially on Lincoln Road).

If I were coming for a visit - I would plan to make Wilton Manors my central location with a day/night trip to SoBe and a 1/2 day or day trip to Hollywood Beach and Haulover Beach - with the rest of the time spent in the Manors.

And most of the bars in Wilton Manors have 2-4-1 Monday-Friday from 1 pm - 9 pm... Plus Georgie's and Rosie's both have some pretty good food choices (albeit only a step up from "bar food.")

I prefer pretentious because obviously that means that the men are better looking, which is why I never went to Fort Methdale unless it was to use the airport.

True - the men in SoBe do tend to be better looking - higher maintenance, but definitely better looking...

I prefer "truth-in-lending" - at least in Fort Lauderdale (particularly Wilton Manors) WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)... Nothing worse then getting w/ a high maintenance, pretentious guy who looks good in the darkened venue so often seen in SoBe and waking up the next morning to have the pa-heebie jeebies scared out of you.  ::) (before he puts his make-up on - I'm thinking Arnold in Torchsong Trilogy).

yesterday was the first sunny beautiful day of the year.  An excuse to wear shorts.  I took the dog to the park.  We sat under some trees taking in the sun when I looked up and noticed a bald eagle in the trees above me.  The eagle started to chirp and all of the sudden all the birds began singing to each other.  We then walked down to the beach and watched the sailboats.

Today ,it's back to the rain.

You know, there are two parts to this storm. The second part arrives tomorrow for the Mid-Atlantic and it's starting to look like a on-land hurricane (http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/northeast-region/weather-radar?play=1) which tells me it's quite strong.

Evidently a low has formed off the coast and it's sucking in the larger storm's moisture now, but I'm just far enough away (~60 miles from the coast) that I won't see much.

It's only a two day wave -- we return to normal April weather (meaning highs of ~65F-69F) for most of the rest of the long range forecast.

Memphis is the hellhole that stays at 125F all summer.

However, I did turn my A/C on a couple hours ago. It also helps drown out hearing my new neighbor practicing her opera voice. Every fucking afternoon. There are two many creative types in my building.

SPECIAL NOTE: Philadelphia has the oldest opera house still in continual use (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_of_Music_(Philadelphia)).

April and May are the two months that I don't turn on the AC or heat and have a two month meager utility bill. After that the AC will be full blast until October. I hate summers in the South!
Title: Re: is winter over yet?
Post by: Miss Philicia on April 09, 2013, 05:12:05 pm
I have to run my A/C all of the time because I'm on the top floor of a 150 year old building with no attic insulation, plus I have four windows facing west so it gets all of the afternoon sun/heat. Basically it roasts in here when it's only 78F outside, because that will make it at least 85F indoors. My utility bills are atrocious, and this is one welfare queen that gets no public assistance for such things, nor rent assistance nor gubmint cheese. Really the only thing I qualify for is a 50% reduction for public transit which I didn't even know about until last year, so I went 7 years paying full price. Actually more because I could have had a reduction when I was on SS those last three years in NYC, so basically I overpaid for an entire decade.

It is a glorious 78 degrees here with a slight breeze and not a cloud in sight! :)
First day in short pants to show off my sleek chicken legs.
The white magnolia tree has started to bloom and I even saw the first butterfly of the season.
Life is good. :)
Yippie!

I've also been going outside on my penthouse terrace for 15 minutes of sunlight in order to elevate my body's vitamin D levels, which were low (only slightly) during my last labs. See my lovely view?

I putzed around outside the past few days too.
Unfortunately, the neighbor who rents an apartment next door left for the weekend (didn't take her car) and her car has a problem with the alarm.

That thing was honking sporadically for 3 f*cking hours! >:(

Call the police and they may can ticket her and she will get the message that isn't cool with the neighbors .

Don't let it fool you. To see that view I have to shimmy up on a roof top A/C unit, then climb up a ledge to the adjoining roof, then aim my camera north. The actual view from my back roof isn't as impressive :)

Is it too early to complain about the oppressive heat?  We hit 82 yesterday and I couldn't tolerate it.  Over the past several years, I'm getting more adverse to heat.  And now they're calling for above average temperatures this summer.

We're going to hit 85F this afternoon. I just went out and around the corner to the small park to sit on a bench and get some sun before it got that high. It was already 75F at 11 AM. I also am not very heat tolerant and it's gotten that way in the last six years or so. I get very uncomfortable if the temperature isn't in the range of 68F-73F indoors. As long as the humidity isn't really high outside I can manage until it's over 90F.

Requisite imagery to prove to Wumpella that Philadelphia has trees blooming -- this was across the street from where I was sitting at the park.

NOTE: with the wind chill factor poor lil' Guilhermina's bundled up with 38℉ weather. Way to go, Tex-ASS.

Meanwhile it's a fabulous sunny day in the City of Brotherly Love, with a reading of 84℉ (going up to 87℉ by 4PM) and low humidity. I'm going to freshen up in the shower with some Mojito body scrub and then scamper downtown and enjoy Rittenhouse Park, then sashay over to Trader Joe's for some groceries. Thunderstorms and a cold front will arrive at 9 PM, just in time for a dinner of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans along with watching The Rachel Zoe Project.

It's hotter here today than yesterday, but actually feels great.  We have a nice breeze through the valley area.  I still have the air on though.  Why take chances?

I do wonder how many of us oldsters deal with the heat issues.  It seems "normal" people get colder as they age.  Perhaps it's a long term issue of having HIV?  I was so overheating yesterday, that I had to keep hosing myself down while doing simple outdoors chores.  If I over exert even a little in the heat, I literally get sick to my stomach.

I dont get it. Do you people just shut yourselves up in the house all summer?

When it goes above 90F I stay home unless something is really necessary, particularly if it's accompanied with humidity. It got to 88F here today and I was fine outside -- I walked all over downtown, even fit my hooves into a pair of vintage Marc Jacobs combat boots for the first time since all of that surgery nonsense, and I performed fine. The fashion set of Greater Killadelphia was greatly admiring my ensemble where I paired a dozen different designer labels.

Then I holed up at Tria off Rittenhouse Square -- a small plates and wine bar where I was dutifully serviced by a young Bradley Cooper-ish bartender. In fact, he was so fucking hot I'm still squeezing out senior citizen jism from my flaccid cock. I'm going to have to make that my new hang out -- fuck going to boring ass fag bars!

Unfortunately I got tipsy after too much Malbec and reserve editions of Madeira, so I never made it to Trader Joe's. Oddly I got the sudden urge to have a manicure, and rang up the Charlie Salon in the Gayborhood but malheureusement Mme. Jacqueline only keeps appointments Thursday through Saturdays, so I'm trekking up there tomorrow afternoon. I used to get manicures monthly back in my NYC days (bad nails on a queen are just not fetch) so I'm thinking I need to start this routine up again. I allowed so many beauty routines to fall by the wayside when I moved to this City of Founding Fathers & Freedom.

Oh, and since I got tipsy I came home and opened up a bottle of vino so I'll be really drunk sometime in the next hour. Fortunately all my klonnies were used up last week so I won't be combining to two a la Liza and waking up vomiting in my sleep as usually happens.

Actually my brows have always been naturally perfect, and I'm not making that up. All my life guys have accused me of shaping and plucking my brows, but I don't at all.

ps: brow waxing is so guido-Jersey Shore and it's major LOL+++ that you do this, much less admit to it. I hope you're not going overboard with it where it looks unnatural. You may have to send me a close up via email for evaluation. I do, however, charge a fee.

No, Harinshio my stellar Korean beauty expert always does impeccable work, the only downside is her breath always smells like fish, seriously. She gets rid of the straggler hairs that like to migrate towards the temples and also thins and shapes the body to perfection.

I'm starting to get a headache now. I've not had this much alcohol since Christmas. Honestly I rarely drink at all these days.

Would it help if I had a couple shots of bourbon? I don't even feel like eating dinner. All I've eaten today is a bowl of granola with skim milk, tons of top quality coffee, a tiny plate of white bean and fontina spread on over-priced paprika melba toast, and some Doritos.

I don't understand the point of owning a detached home if you can't even manage to plant a fucking tulip bulb. That isn't complicated gardening. I bet your grass is pathetic and parched, and you have sad, shriveled up cheap shrubs that were there from the last owner. You probably think plastic pink flamingos in the front yard are chic.

I want a pair now to put out by our pond. :)

Speaking of which...
My mother is moving back to Minnesota at the end of next month.
She gave us a cement turtle from her yard LAST FALL and I placed it next to the pond.
Last week, Kenny was looking out the window and noticed it for the first time. ::)
He got so excited and dashed out to take a look.
He came back in disappointed because he thought it was a real turtle. ::)

I'm trying to figure out what to put out there next. ;)

I grew up in a family that was hyper-yard work intensive. We had the most lush yard in our subdivision because my mother was obsessive. Then from the age of maybe 10 until 15 I mowed countless yards regularly and despised every minute of it, and swore up and down that as an adult I would only ever live in an apartment in a city so that I never, ever had to mow a blade of grass again in my life.

And guess what suckers, that's exactly what I've done.

Well sure, I excelled at a young age in Bible School and learned that telling old ladies that you wanted to be a preacher when you grew up made them think you were the most adorable thing ever. But I guess by around the age of 12 I thought that it didn't make sense that there were so many religions in the world and that only one of them could be the right one, so I decided they were all silly. And around that age was when Kevin Smallwood's locker was right to my left, and because he was habitually truant he was two years older than everyone in our class. He wore super tight jeans every day (probably the same pair) and his fantastically prominent cock snaked down the inside of his left leg so I every time I was fetching a book out of my locker I would get to see that -- well, at least the three days a week he managed to come to school. Anyway, basically I'd sit in church and think of Kevin. Isn't it great that his last name was Smallwood? So ironic.

I cant remember what trees smell like that but when I lived in Montgomery in the garden district there was no denying that smell in the spring .

There were a lot of cotton woods there but , don't know .

OK edited to add the cum tree link for Ted . http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/plant-finder/plant-details/kc/a720/pyrus-calleryana-chanticleer.aspx

There are trees that smell like semen?   I need to get out of the city more.  I've never heard such a thing.

If that wasn't the dumbest thing I've ever heard I might be offended. Of course if this  tree did exist I guess it would be a member of the nut family.

Believe it or not, I grow "contorted pussy willows". :)
I need to prune them every year.
I tie them up (tee hee) in bundles and sell them at work.
This is a picture of them in our entryway at home.

I don't understand the point of owning a detached home if you can't even manage to plant a fucking tulip bulb. That isn't complicated gardening. I bet your grass is pathetic and parched, and you have sad, shriveled up cheap shrubs that were there from the last owner.

Chill OUT YankeeDoodleDandee  ::)

Our grass is brown because around June we start depleting our water supply and the City says we can only water our lawns once a week and it has to be before 6am or after 10pm (and im usually really drunk during those hours)

I do have some Wandering Jew around my Oak tree (its impossible to kill that stuff)....See, isnt it pretty?

I thought it was the pear family.  There are very popular, due to their spring flowers, red/orange/purple leaves in fall, and basically no need for raking dropped leaves.  You see them mostly in the suburbs, as urban areas have the old, huge oaks and similar trees.  The tree in my tulip pic is a Cleveland Pear.  That explains why we smell it so much.  If you have never noticed it, the flowers literally smell like semen, especially on a humid day when the air is heavy.

Now, on to the bushes that smell like cat urine.

Teddy, that's your upper lip smelling like semen not the trees.
