Why do you need vitamin C?

Unless you have a vitamin C deficiency it really makes no difference. Vitamin C is water soluble so it's clean out of your system fairly quickly and it's not toxic in the same way that Vitamins A & D can be when taken in excess.

So it boils down to how much vitamin C you want to piss out each day.

Yup. A quality multivitamin can't do any harm.

Strictly speaking, you shouldn't need any supplements if your diet is healthy and balanced. A diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables will provide you with all the vitamin C you need as well as some from the B group.

Appropriate amounts of red meat provide iron,  moderate amounts of sunlight (5 - 10 mins per day) will provide you with adequate vitamin D and so on.

I cannot stress enough the value of a healthy diet.

But a multivitamin can be helpful if you want to be sure. Excess vitamins and minerals are generally excreted, though fat soluble vitamins such as A & D are stored in your body and too much of these can make you feel sick. But provided you follow the directions on your multivitamin bottle you shouldn't have that problem.

Sun tanning is a bad idea. A really bad idea.

A tan is your skin's reaction to too much sunlight. I'm not sure how the whole sun thing works up in the States but down here in Oz we have huge problems with melanoma as a result of our love affair with the beach and the really intense UV levels we get in the summer time.

Moderate sun exposure (uncovered arms and legs) for 5 or 10 minutes a day will provide for all your Vitamin D needs. Regular tanning/sun baking is not good.
