LA Times article/ Long term non progressors
« on: July 06, 2006, 05:51:07 pm »
Hi AM family

It's been a while since I posted. I've been visiting family in California. I head back to Australia on Friday. I may have some very exciting immigration news soon too. I'll keep you all posted.
Here is a link to a story in today's LA Times.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-elites6jul06,0,3233276,full.story?coll=la-home-headlines

It talks about Long term non progressors (LTNP's) and 'elite controllers'. It mentions the Harvard study that Zephyr, myself and others here at AM are involved with. To find out if you may be eligible for the Harvard study go to Clinical Trials and see the Elite Controllers thread.

in Peace and Love

Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for calling me today to alert me to this article! Hopefully, it will generate interest from others who would like to enroll in Dr. Walker's study and assist in the research.

I've said it before, it is my HONOR to be a part of the on-going studies conducted by the various entities, and I will continue to travel to donate whatever it is they need to forward the knowledge.

I want to personally thank you, too, for travelling across the thousands of miles you do to participate...I know only too well the toll it takes on you.

May you have a safe journey back to the land of Oz, dear. I hope things fared well in your absence.

I'll miss you, honey.

Love,
Zephyr

I know from my friends with chimp experience at Yerkes that our ability to successfully extrapolate HIv in chimps (who can be infected, but shrug off the infection and revert to seronegative) to human-based therapy has not happened.  We still don't KNOW why chimps, so close to humans, do not as a rule maintain an HIV infection, much less progress to AIDS. There have been fewer than five successful attempts to create an AIDS situation in a chimp, yet the WHY of this eludes us.

Only by studying HUMANS who are long-term non-progressors will we be able to discover the genetic code that makes this happen, in my opinion. There is only so far we can go with chimp/primate study, and insofar as LTNP status goes, I believe we reached that wall years and years ago.

THAT is why identifying and studying LTNP's in the human population is SO DAMNED IMPORTANT. HIV eludes our ability to extrapolate from petri dish to people, from primate/simian/chimp to people. I applaud, and am ALWAYS going to be the champion of, people willing to make the sacrifices in time and energy and effort (not to mention financial sacrifice) to participate in the study that might .. just ... stop HIV.

You guys are heroes. From your genetic structure to your huge hearts.

Just saying.

Thanks Zephyr, Jonathon and Ray

That is the best article I've seen in the media on LTNP's.

I, like Zephyr am honored and humbled to be able to participate in this and other studies. Once I return to Australia I'll be traveling to Sydney on August 2nd to once again take part in a study there.

It is most important to note that Zephyr and I are partcipating in these studies for ALL those affected by HIV/AIDS. We hope and pray that our participation in these studies and the studies themselves may someday have a remarkable outcome. It would be, needless to say the best thing I could do in my life. I carry the many thoughts, images and words of my HIV Poz brothers and sisters with me daily.

I am, when all is said and done a kind hearted, middle aged guy with a dream. I take part in these studies, and dream for us all.

Paul

As all of you know, I have been a supporter of this science, from the very beginning.  I have although, stayed off these threads, as it was me who let Zephyr know of a few highly respected AM forum members, who have issues with our support of this great experiment, and I am not just talking about the science here, we have chosen in our support to be a part of this great discovery.

This morning, I just cannot read and not comment.

Quote
"Such feelings of isolation are common among controllers, said Dr. Florencia Pereyra of the Partners AIDS Research Center. She established a small support group for controllers in Boston and found that "because they're not on medication and don't have high mortality rates, they feel apart from the rest of the HIV community."

I want to let you all know that I have been a "phone a friend" with Zephyr since about February, I think.  In that time, I have heard her time and time again, lament this very issue in her life, and in the way she has interactions here on this board.  I feel so very sorry that this is going on today, in this time, and from the very people who are living the nightmare.  I have also heard from so many of you women, that there are no places where you feel comfortable, because of the "differences" between you and the dominant Gay Care Model.  I need for all of us to tear down these curtains that we are placing between us.  We don't have the privelege of time here, as many of us are getting really old, (HIV Age) and the new ones coming along don't understand the urgency to support and help ALL of the HIV family.  I never joined up with a sudy for anything, but I always have held a huge amount of respect for those that have and are.

another quote from the article.......

Quote
Another common sentiment among them was a desire to be studied. "The question seems to come back to them all the time," said Pereyra: "Why me? What's so special about me?"

This my friends, is just one more reason we must embrace the whole family.  I think the people here on this board who are committed to this program are very special people.  Most of them suffer from pretty much nothing but poverty, they have good lives, productive immune systems, good jobs, and still.......................  they take the time out of their lives to promote to the learning that just might give us all life.  I like those odds, and if I were a rich man,...........  Well, you fill in the blanks...

Paul, we have never communicated, but I want to thank you for what you are doing and for the tremendous time and energy that you have expended to contribute to the mystery that is HIV.

Zephyr, you know how I feel but I want to state here for all to see, I think you are "the bomb", and that what you are doing is far more than you understand, or could understand at this point.

We are all in your debt for the total generosity that you guys have shown in participating in this program and research project.

In Love, and Thanks.

The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals,
and 362 to heterosexuals.
This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.
