AIDS Walk New York Raises More than $4 Million

15,000 people—including the stars of “Pose”—participated in the event that supports GMHC and other local HIV groups.

A crowd of 15,000 walked, ran and sashayed through Central Park for the annual AIDS Walk New York, raising more than $4 million for Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) and other local HIV/AIDS service organizations.

TV stars, Broadway belters and local lawmakers rallied and entertained attendees from the stage during the opening ceremony and post-walk show. According to a GMHC press release, celebs at the podium included: Ryan Jamaal Swain, MJ Rodriguez and Billy Porter of Pose; Shangela, Ginger Minj, Milk, Chi Chi DeVayne and Cristal DeMure of RuPaul’s Drag Race; Andrea Navedo of Jane the Virgin; Nico Tortorella of Younger; Selenis Leyva and Dale Soules of Orange Is the New Black; Frenchie Davis of The Voice; comedian Margaret Cho; Miss Universe Catriona Gray; Broadway stars Bonnie Milligan and Brian Stokes Mitchell; and local politicians Kirsten Gillibrand, Jerrold Nadler, Richard N. Gottfried and David Weprin.

160K is really good, but even better to hear that 1200 people came out in support.  :)

at our walk, i worked a health fair table for the Charlotte Ryan White TGA. (a transitional grant area TGA is an area with a high per capita HIV rate which receives extra Ryan White Part A monies to help combat the epidemic. The CLT TGA covers 5 NC counties and 1 SC county which consists of nearly 65% of the entire NC HIV+ population) These funds go to R.A.I.N (regional aids interfaith network), the main case management/prevention organization in the area.

I worked this table last year too and was surprised both times at the amount of people who had donated and were going to walk who knew nothing about HIV, Ryan White (the person), Ryan White (the program), or anything about the efforts in our area. I always really enjoy the health fairs where I get to educate people (besides just handing out table swag and condoms. LOL), so I enjoyed both the pre-walk info venue and the walk around downtown Charlotte. (even if it was hot as blue blazes again. I guess with global climate change I'm just going to have to accept that early May will now be as hot as August usually is)

I understand that I'm talking about the CLT AIDSwalk in a thread about the NY AIDSwalk. I did this because we didn't have any big celebs (just a local TV reporter and some team mascot), no big crowds (like NY always has because, you know, more people), no big dollars (like NY always has), and nobody wrote a story about our walk . . .  sadly not even the local newspapers. :(

There are AIDSwalks all around that never get the press they deserve for the donations and awareness they raise; but those walks have been integral in their areas (especially in rural areas and in the Southern states) for helping combat the HIV epidemic

Sounds like a great event, shame the coverage by the media is lacking.

Perhaps you could write your own "blog report" on the event next year and, see if one of the HIV related sites or publication would publish it as a guest writing.
