Title: Simon is dead and Molly is missing,
Post by: Poz Brit on September 03, 2006, 07:22:40 am
Simon is dead and Molly is missing, some are searching as the blustering rain is thrown to the ground, it seems my small yard has been tilted as the wind holds all at an angle, the frost hardy banana plants have ragged 6 foot leaves now, that hang like a wet horses main, the bamboos crack like bull whips in the big gusts, but the small birds are still able to manoeuvre to the feeders as they swing violently in the wind.

These birds in my yard, for the two years that I have been ill have given me so much, even my sanity; they use the trees and shrubs to live out their lives, some conceived and fledged here, I put out the fluff from my tumble dryer in spring, it’s eagerly collected for bedding and I feed them all year long, they wash morning and evening in the small pool I created for them.
.
During the sunny days of summer I sit out in my oasis, even though I am surrounded by houses the plants afford me privacy, and my birds come with their songs and chirring chirps, but so did Molly, her large eyes, blue as a bright spring morning sky, in her blue grey coat she would slink her way through the yard, with such grace and poise as only a feline can perform, she was beautiful, and I think she knew it. But she was a killer, ruthless with no regard, where as Simon, was an old monster tom, he had had his ears removed because of Cancer a few years ago. He was docile really, he would just hiss at you with bad temper as he cocked his leg and urinated on the neighbours shed roof, a usual stop on his frequent prowl of the high walls. The stream came from him; I would swear for nearly five minuets, I have never known a cat pee for so long. He never made an attempt for the birds, but just sat and watched their antics. I was saddened when his owner a few doors down told me he had died in the garden.

This year the newly fledged had been proudly brought in by the parents, they sat on the ground quivering with open bills awaiting feeding, but Molly was waiting, motionless in the marigolds. The parent turned to select some more for her youngster, when Molly with silent stealth struck, claws stretched out and teeth exposed in her open mouth, a frantic commotion and noise of beating wings as all, but one, launched skywards, Molly ran, up the boundary wall with beating wings protruding from her mouth. Taking the small frightened creature in to its own personal hell, on several other occasions I would find a patch of feathers, I knew she had struck again. I tried in vain to keep her out, but Molly still, came hunting. So, now, I have built a bird table its platform about four foot six from the ground.

When a note with a picture dropped through my door, asking if any one had seen this cat as she has not come home for days, it was unmistakably Molly, a rye smile crossed my face, I feel guilty for this, but I am quietly pleased that Molly has gone.

Hi John

My garden is full of beautiful birds, they wake me up every morning with their songs and at night the noise is amazing as they all say goodnight to each other, but luckly we don't have any cats around here, but my Annie (Bordercollie) doesn't  like to share her lawn with them, so first thing she does every morning is to clear them off, but she has never harmed one of them.

We are just coming into Spring now and we have watched the nests being made ready, so very soon we will have the fledglings around.
My kitchen window is quite high from the ground so my bird feeder is it safe and where I can see it when I sit and have breakfast, we have the most beautiful breeding pair of Wood pideons, this is their second year with us..We also have Wax Eyes, Tui's, Finch's, and lot of sparows..I love spring, so many wonderful birds to listen to, being in the rural sector we get very little traffic noise so the birds can be very loud at times.

I was sorry to hear about old Simon..and Molly, well if she is still out there no doubt she will be back to annoy the birds, unfortunatly that's what cats do if they are left to run around...they love to prey on birds... >:(

Hugs
