Vision Loss

Does anyone have any links that would help for someone who is HIV poz, is not on meds, but is suffering from loss of vision in one eye?  Thanks

Biggums,

If his CD4 are 50 or so it might be caused by CMV cytomegalovirus.

It is very serious and it causes blindness.

You can look at aidsinfonet.org and Google CMV.

I agree with Alain, google CMV retinitis. Have they seen an opthamologist? If it would be cmv, it needs to be address very quickly. CMV can progress very fast to blindness. I have loss in my right eye from it. If your friend has any questions, please feel free to ask.

There is an article in the new Feb/Mar issue of POZ about a blind interior decorator which may have some info.  A neighbor of mine in NYC, the photographer John Dugdale, delayed dealing with his CMV creating true artistic challenges for his work.  This is not to sound alarmist, but, hopefully, to nudge you into getting someone to look at what is going on very soon.  Best, Win

You don't EVER want to mess with eye issues.  Please always go see an eye doctor about such things.

No loss of vision should be treated lightly.

If the individual has 50 or less CD4s, CMV is a prime candidate. But there are other vision problems that lead to blindness or seriously impaired vision.

The bottom line is, anyone noticing changes is vision should see an opthamologist as soon as possible.

Also, it is a wise precaution for everyone who is positive to see an opthamologist once a year.

Vision is nothing to take for granted.

Also a check for diabetes may be in order if their counts are fine and CMV is ruled out.  Diabetic retinopathy is also pretty nasty, and of course not HIV related.

My eye doctor knows about my condition and I have to get checked every year ver. every two years. The last time I was there I was given a test paper to look at, at least once a week and if the boxes blur or wave then I have to go back in and see the doc.

Used to be that the ASO's gave out that "test paper" to all their clients.  Its just a grid.  When you look at it you should be able to see all the lines in place.

Has anyone here experienced this?   I need to make an appointment with an opthamologist, but I have a different issue.   I've got one pupil which is slightly larger than the other and sometimes causes a glare or it gets watery like if strained too long.

Anyone had that?   Can't wait to hear the stories to fuel my hypochondria ;)
