Hi

This forum is a safe place for pre-HAART long-term survivors (PHLTS), defined as people living with HIV who tested positive for the virus before the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in 1996. This forum is a result of PHLTS members petitioning for a place to discuss issues unique to those who lived with a diagnosis of HIV through the initial decades of the AIDS epidemic.

Thanks. I began my years positive by taking AZT. I had family telling me to take my medications and all I know is that some how more meds became available over time. I wasn't sure when all the new meds came about. In the beginning I laid in bed knowing that I was content feeling safe in my parent's home. The meds made me pretty ill at first.

DID you take DDI?

Or this blue tablet that needed to be taken on an empty stomach

common experiences long term survivors who lived through pre haart   endured at least I know I did

Not to get to depresing

what is pre haart

to me it was waiting for death with no hope for any future my personal reality was short term before suffering and than my untimely demise, well it would have been timely in that it was known to be near and the knowledge that it would not be a pleasant end to an unaccomplished uneventful unfulfilled  life.

it left physical but more emotional scars. I lived and pressed on even if my future was undermined by the virus. I still have hope there will be something to turn around this feeling and weight of gloom and doom that still haunts me. I would not been a great life even if there was no virus to be caught. I was very self destructive and a failure at most of my endeavors.

my age to me is a surprisingly large number considering how bad at living I seem to be .

pre haart was an unsermontable struggle for anyone who had been diagnosed with HIV

just a small thought on what prehaart was

now even after twenty years of haart I still have not been able to put the pieces back together of what my life should be and feel happy about not being more that what i am. if to me being alive is enough to just be content with what I have and hope I just do what i can to be me again some day

maybe just around a corner I will have an epiphany and the feeling of piece and pride and all around good feeling will overcome me I will realize just how wonderful being more than just alive feels like

just rambling trying to clear my mind with a note to anyone who might be out there who might feel life passing them by  and wanting to be heard. HIV has been a struggle

peace and fulfilment I believe will come it make take time but at least now i believe I have that precious time to wait for that feeling to materialize

just saying

all my best to you and thank you for being here to write to

while it was a insurmountable struggle for some people; it clearly wasn't insurmountable for everyone, as you and I, and a number of others, are still here today. ;)

all my best to you and thank you for being here to write to
actually goody2feet has never replied in this thread and hasn't been back to the forums in several weeks :(

insurmountable just sounded right and  made it seem more like to dream the impossible dream

Ya I realized they have not been back but it seemed like a good question

what is pre haart ?

incase some might not know what it was.

NOt to many people write here anymore. most of the posts know seem to be from  people who do not have the time some of us have spent dealing with HIV

their are a few though and that is comforting

thank you leatherman for responding in their absence

all my best to you and I hope my long post was not difficult to read

I thought about posting this earlier; wrote it up but lost my nerve to submit it  then thought it might be in bad taste and counterproductive

the virus was effectively insurmountable? most passed away but  some did survive

if not for bad taste there would be no taste at all, this is so wrong but it gives me a naughty little chuckle to point out the irony

but if you take the meds and stay viral suppressed infection is not likely neither is dying ( can not ask for anything better ) life is for the living,

IN that skipping doses after being undetectable will make you detectable and infectious

just saying play nice and stay safe

this is so wrong but giving it so much thought I have to let it be posted to see if anyone else enjoys the twist of perspective and the resulting irony from the you surviving the virus to the virus surviving in you

effectively no risk as in close enough too

effectively insurmountable the other side of the coin looking at it from the other direction.

do not give this to much thought it was just an observation of perspective and irony

keep healthy and there in keep happy
