I think Barak Obama is a fad candidate, and Hillary Clinton is too contentious to be electable.  (I still like her, but a realistic analysis crosses her off the list)   I also think that Democrats are thinking more strategically than they have in the past, as is witnessed by the last election.  I predict that neither of these two will get the nomination.  I would predict John Edwards to be the most electable right now, frankly.   I suspect we will see an Edwards vs McCain race.

I think people underestimate Hillary's abilities.  Yes, she SEEMS contentious, but she's proven she CAN win over the middle, and even eat into the other side.  She won her recent election by a landslide... 30 points.  Yes, I know that's New York state but if you live there you know upstate is VERY conservative, so she got a lot of conservatives to vote for her this year.  I realize that this won't be replicated in Alabama in any degree but she doesn't need to do that.  The middle section of the US electorate is drastically small these days anyway.  John Kerry, aka Douchebag, only lost by ONE state in '04... that's all.  Hillary can easily do better than that.   Plus this war will continue to disenfranchise US voters with all things Republican, and we all know John McCain is a cheerleader and he owns this war as much as Bush.  That party brand is eroded on a daily basis.  Democrats could run a clown in '08 and win.

Hillary Clinton has also had more pig shit thrown on, over, and against her in her lifetime by the Republican Sleaze Machine than any other person EVER, including her husband (that says a lot).  Does she EVER wilt from any of this?  Never... name another person who handles that like her?  Anyway, with the amount of dirt they've thrown at her over the years exactly WHERE will they find anymore?  It's all been thrown!  THAT is why she totally freaks out the right wingers.

Note, I'm not saying she's my top choice or anything like that.  Just that if she wins the Democratic primary I can easily see her winning the actual general election.

Oh, and I also think Obama will be set up to run on the ticket with Hillary as VP.  Unbeatable!

Philly... I honestly hope you're right, but I don't think the Republicans are as in the dog house as we would like to believe... yet.   People like Giuliani, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney actually have a level of marketable appeal.

As far as Hillary goes...  I will concede this: she has one thing going for her that others don't:   her husband is the best campaigner alive.

No way either Guiliani or Romney will win a primary for the GOP.  The theocrat wing controls the primaries for them.  And James Dobson has already just this week stated that he will never throw his support behind even McCain.   Brownback will announce this week and I totally can see him winning... though he'll never win the general election.  At least that's how I see it right now.

Marketable appeal means zilch unless it's aimed at the base right now.  Guiliani and Romney both have too much gay and abortion baggage in their recent past to make it past the Holy Rollers.   Plus 51% of religious voters think Mormons are a cult.

I have thought the same thing, Jeff.  Everytime I see his name, that's the first thing I think of.  If he's going to run, he should consider changing it.  He could always use the "porn name process"   :D

I don't know if Hillary WILL win; I would love to see it happen though.  As others have said, just to shake things up a bit.  So many other countries - some that really shock me sometimes - around the world are electing or have elected women and other "minorities" into high offices.

Yeah, I was really surprised about Benazir Bhutto myself...

When will we learn that attempting to see who's going to win a Presidential election 22 months before it happens never works?

Who had heard of Bill Clinton in January 1991?

Oh, and unless I miss my guess, 20 Jan 2009 is Inauguration Day for whoever wins in 2008.

Fortunately for Hillary this is not a nationwide popularity contest, but a state by state contest.  So if you look at the electoral map all she has to do is hold the blue states from 2004 and pick up one other and she wins.  If she were smart she would pick Bill Richardson from NM as a running mate.  He is a Governor, would help her carry that state and sorry not politically correct, but do a great deal to gain the Hispanic vote.  Also just this past week, for the first time ever single women outnumber married women 51% to 49%, and single women typically vote democratic.  I could definitely see a reversal of 2000.  Republican wins the nationwide vote count by 3-5 points (she would lose red states by huge margins), but she carry just enough states to win electoral college.

I would love to see her win and think it is not outside the realm of possibilities.

I really hate this argument.  Being "not ready" for something, in my opinion, means that it is LONG overdue.  I also don't buy that America isn't ready for its first black president.  We have a female, black secretary of state, as odious as she is.  But still...

Elected offices vs. appointed, but I get your point.  At any rate, as a country we won't ever get to the point that a non-white male is elected to office without running non-whites.

I still maintain that Republicans have so screwed themselves in the ass, and will continue to do that for the next 20 months, that Democrats could put a clown on the ticket and still win.  We'll see... Fox News is already running endless breathless pundits saying how Obama attended a Muslim radical madrassa as a child in Indonesia and will betray this country to the terrorists.

I find it refreshing to see that Obama has been exposed to some Muslim tradition....it gives rise to a person who is much more diverse and well-rounded.  As a world leader today this is of paramount importance when making peaceful inroads to other nations/cultures that don't have the same belief system as main-stream America.  This diversity of culture is what has been sorely lacking in the White House.  Of course we NEED a change....we can all agree on that....now it is a question of how to MAKE that change happen.  Philly....I agree in that we have to get used to running non-whites (1st step) and then we will be able to elect a non-white to office.  Keep in mind that the term "we" here does not refer to those of us on the AM forum per se...but rather the electorate at large.

Be well....

As a resident of New Mexico, I would love to see Richardson become Pres. He announced his intention to run this morning. He has done a lot of really good things for our state. I think he would continue that to a nationwide level. the key here for any Dem. though is that they will have to have a clear plan for dealing with Iraq. Unfortunately, for alll their talk, the Dems have yet to come up with an alternative plan, which we desperately need. I also would love to see Hillary win, but think that she doesn't have much chance as she has way too much baggage. She would definitely kick some ass though. Can you imagine if she were Pres. and went after bin Laden when she's PMSing? You could put it on Pay-per-View and make a fortune! ;)

Several Democrats have offered plans concerning Iraq. Biden, Levin, Kennedy, Obama, Kuchinich, Richardson , to name a few. Hillary is the one with the least coherent message when it comes to Iraq. She must get off the fence.

If you rely on corporate media for information you're likely to only get McCain and Lieberman's ridiculous theories concerning Iraq.

Maybe Rosie should run for President....she says whatever is on her mind without any regard for how un/popular it may be.

At this point I question what's needed on a CV to run for US president that I'm contemplating running myself.

I just read that article...

I really hate this argument.  Being "not ready" for something, in my opinion, means that it is LONG overdue.  I also don't buy that America isn't ready for its first black president.  We have a female, black secretary of state, as odious as she is.  But still...

Well look at Nancy Pelosi, it took 200 yrs for a female speaker of the house. I agree it is long overdue on both counts but it doesn't mean it's gonna happen in 2008. If either of them wins, I would be happy but I just don't see it happening, sorry. I would love to be wrong but doesn't think I will be, we'll just have to wait and see.

Giuliani might make a great candidate for the fall election.  Unfortunately he is way to liberal for the conservative base of the Republican party.

It is extremely difficult for someone to be the favorite now and end up winning 18 months from now.  However, she is smart, can raise mega bucks, has an astute staff and is married to one of the most savvy politicians there is.  Plus if things continue to go bad in Iraq and the country has a sour mood, it will make the Clinton era look mighty good, even with the blue dress.  I wonder if she ever wears a blue dress, if so the Republicans would probably label her "Devil in a Blue Dress"

National polls don't really mean much.  You have got to look at individual state polls.  All she needs is an Ohio or Florida, plus NM and she wins.

I love how we're now getting presidents who are only president of half the country plus some swing state... and the other half is completely written off.

"Fuck the red states, all she needs is Ohio."

"Fuck the blue states, he just needs to pick up Pennsylvania."

It really bodes well for the future political health of the republic.

You're not going to have state polls this early out, so that's what you get.  It does however give you at least *some* idea that this "who is electable" question is kind of bunk on this thread, clearly Hillary is.  Whether or not she'd actually win I laid out my ideas of how it's possible already and I won't repeat them.  It's do-able, it's not a guarantee.  I don't find her the hopeless case that many here seem to (with little explanation other than that she's a woman or has "baggage").

I read some article yesterday about how it's estimated she can raise $500 million for a campaign, which is $100 more than Bush did in '04.  That's pretty huge (distasteful, I know...)  Also, there are 9 million more female votes currently than male votes, also pretty huge considering the margins of victor in the last 2 presidential elections.  Folks should also not underestimate one BIG thing:  Hillary Clinton is not just a politician, she's a celebrity.

Personally having actually lived under Rudy Guiliani for in NYC for a decade I won't be casting a vote him.  Thanks.

Agree, however that is the reality of national politics.  We have become so divisive that there is just a very small percentage that decide elections, the so called swing voters.  I am as guilty as anyone.  There is no way that I would ever vote for a Republican, simply because I cannot vote for a person who is a member of a party that is so different from the way I see things and I am not just referring to the gay issue.  Plus close elections aren't something new, Kennedy just barely beat Nixon, Carter just barely beat Ford and who can forget the famous picture of Truman holding the paper declaring his defeat.  It is only now more in your face due to talk radio, blogs and such.

The divide really isn't so clear cut as the pundit class likes to lay it out.  It's not red vs. blue states, it's red vs. blue counties and it all pretty much reflects a greater urban/rural divide.  This should surprise nobody because our current two party system was carried over from England on the same divisions.  This has gone on forever... there were even two political divisions in Byzantium like this.  If you look at it that way I'm not sure if that's more worry, less or the same.  Politics are about power through division anyway you slice it.

You're right, but even Reagan managed to sweep to victories... and Clinton managed to win Florida, Tennesee, and a bunch of the midwestern states in 1996.

I really hate the way this simplistic "red state/blue state" paradigm has permeated the way we think about presidential elections.  It's like the Gilded Age.

I've voted for Republicans a few times... and I'm not ashamed to admit it... but given the way a lot of them have acted over the past couple of years... I'd definitely think twice about it.
