Whooping Cough? WTF?
« on: August 27, 2011, 10:11:43 pm »
Always looking to add a new disease to our collection, it seems we now have Whooping Cough.  It involves a stuffy head, with heavy mucus drainage, which settles in your chest and makes you cough.  But not just any cough, no a "Whooping Cough".  The name comes from fits of coughing, that can last minutes and the "Whoop" sound you make, catching your breath during the coughing.  My coughing became so bad for a couple of days, that I would cough so hard as to vomit.  Lovely.

There is really no treatment, unless you need antibiotics, or codeine to help control the coughing.  It's highly contagious for the first few weeks and I have been coughing so much that I have not had a voice for five days.  Ah, the good times.

Hey Joe, sorry to hear this, it is an odd thing to get, as Will says we usually hear of it for kids, but it does affect adults with that awful sound this cough makes.

Hope it goes it's way soon Joe, feel better!

Get well Joe.  I was coughing so hard this week, I felt like I was going to break a rib. I am pretty sure I didn't have whooping cough though.

Hoping it passes quickly Joe.  I saw a few cases of severe petusssis and it was agnozing for the patients.  The hillbilly treatment that we've used is to boil a garlic clove and then make tea with the water.  If nothing else, people won't get close enough to catch it....get well soon.

Yee Gawd!  I've never had any of the "childhood" illnesses (mumps measels etc) and always thought whooping cough was in that group.

I hope this passes soon.  Sounds gastly.  To cough until you vomit?

Hope you feel better soon, Joe.

Synchronicity and all that but just a couple of days ago the Philadelphia NPR had a program on immunizations and was talking about how they have discovered that the Pertussis (whooping cough) protection from the DPT shot wears off over time.  Apparently the cdc is recommending a one-time booster (tdap), when you get your 10 year tetanus booster.  Don't know if the booster is safe for us poz types though.

Thanks all and yes I know about the booster NOW, as the ID doc told me.  This is possibly the most disgusting illness I have ever had.  Yes RAB, cough so hard and so long you vomit.  I've taken to running into the shower stall when I start coughing.  I learned the hard way, with my second major coughing spell being the magic number, while standing in our open kitchen.  Seriously disgusting.  Still no voice, just spending the day watching the remnants of Irene pound us with wind and rain.

This doesn't seem to be getting better, I'm back to gurgling when I breath, so it's off to the clinic in the morning.  I'll keep you posted.

Whooping cough has had a bit of a resurgence in the past few years in the big US cities (Los Angeles being one of them). My ex roommate (HIV negative) had it bad a few years ago and she got over it fine. Of course she got her vaccination after the fact but still worth it to get as she said it was a horrendous experience. At one of my first appointments with my new doctor he prescribed the vaccination shot. Glad I got it.
