Dr. realization
« on: August 05, 2010, 12:56:38 pm »
After 5 years of Dr. visits, I came to a realization that the only time my Dr. thinks of me is when I am in her office and she opens my file for her first time. She is a good Dr., and I have never had anything really bad go wrong yet, but it was a hard pill to swallow. :) I often wonder if there was something wrong, would she only know 5 seconds into the visit?

Sorry Newby, not sure what the question is.  If your doctor is an ID or HIV specialist she probably has a good number of patients.  From what you say here I don't think that she doesn't care about you or never "thinks" about you; she just has to focus on you when she sees you.  It is also quite likely that she does a quick review of your file when your blood results arrive; if she sees nothing to be concerned about she moves on until it is time to see you. Otherwise --if something truly urgent had come up-- she would call you.  Be glad about this (as you said, you've never had anything going badly with your health); it means that you are right on track.

Now, if she's totally indifferent towards you and/or appears uninformed/unprofessional then that's another story and you would need to look for a new doc.

Since all my medical records are computerized my ID doctor only comes in with a little file folder with my BP, temp and weight and any medical complaints taken by her nurse upon my arrival. Then she goes into the computer and prints off a copy of my last labs to go over with me. Then comes the physical time. After the physical she goes over all my prescriptions to see if I need renewals for anything or if I need any other medications or increases in medications doseages, then it's off to the lab for blood work and urine test. My files are checked by the head of Infectious Disease Department since I also battle an OI. If she would happen to miss something he catches it. Normally you have an hour block with the doctor but sometimes it may go a lot longer if she thinks you need to be checked by another specialist.  If that is the case she makes the appointments with them at that time and hands you the time and date and directions to get to their offices. In my case she tries to get it done that day so I don't have to come back for the added tests due to my long commute.
