Hey fellow AMG'ers.
I got hit with some fraudulent charges to the tune of about $2100 while at AMG. >:(
Spoke to my bank and a VA. detective and they believe my Visa Debit card number was "skimmed" while in DC.
The detective said they have uncovered recent ops in DC whereby waiters or restaraunt staff skims the card number + the CSV code and then sell the info to people all over the world. those people can then make a new card and new ID in a matter of days...then go on shopping sprees. My fraudulent charges were made in a Marion, Ohio Walmart $800 (really?), Gamestop $600, and smaller amounts at Meijer stores. The thugs are getting brazen nowadays cause all these charges were counter and not online.
Anyways, Detective recommends everyone in my group check their accounts line by line, because sometimes the crooks will only do very small charges across several accounts to avoid detection.
and yes, my bank has given me temp credits until I go in today to fill out all the fraud papers, and I should get all charges reversed back to me within a week or so. Thank goodness.

I'm so sorry to hear that someone stole your debit card number. I know this is a big hassle. At least both the bank and law enforcement have been helpful.

I found out in San Francisco back in '07 when I could not withdraw money on my debit card that I was expected to call the bank before I left for vacation to indicate I was going away. Banks even have automated telephone prompts where you type in the dates you will be away. But it could be a good idea to speak to a representative and also state where you will be on those dates.
Debit cards are good for cash withdrawls but credit cards should be used for purchases, etc. as you have more rights (not to pay for fraudulent charges) if your credit card is used.

Interesting....
When I got home that Tuesday, I received a call from Chase about some suspected fraud on my credit card -- the one I used all thru AMG. Someone tried to buy some software in the Netherlands -- Chase saw that I had been in DC and thought it might not be me.
That was the only "hit" I know about and they overnighted me a new card with a new number..................

Sorry to hear that you had to go through this shit ! So far everything seems to be on the up and up with the single credit card that we used. Thanks for the heads up.
The only place we used the credit card was @ The front desk of the hotel, Ruby Tuesday's and the Chinese restaurant.
I brought cash on this trip, and avoided the debit card, thinking I could fall victim to this same sort of crap.
We've been checking the card daily, since we returned, just to play it on the safe side.

Will, that really sucks, we didn't have any problems like that so far, did you ever find your Drivers License, you told me some twink took it from you........is this correct?

This happened to me at the Montreal AMG and at our Meet and Greet. The card was copied at the bar and the numbers sent to Mexico and used within 15 minutes. My bank recognized the fraud alert and froze the card but since I was out of the country and I was not receiving calls, I did not know until I tried to use the card. I ended up getting all the money credited back right away (it was over $800) rather than waiting for me to file the papers. It helped that I have been with my credit union since 1980.
Now I never surrender the debit card when I travel...only when I swipe it myself. Oddly enough, in Montreal now, you always swipe your card yourself at a restaurant or bar. They use portable devices and no one but you touches your card. Also the card number is encrypted on the receipt and device screen.
Hope everyone gets their funds restored quickly.

Over here, any time you use your credit or debt card in a public establishment, there's a little machine at the counter (or bar or whatever) that you put your card in and then key in a four-digit pin number. Nobody ever handles your card but you.
While it's true that fraudsters have gotten around it (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19001280), Chip and PIN fraud is nowhere near as common as the type of fraud you guys have been experiencing.
Hope you get your money back Will, whether it was stolen by fraud or by twink. ;D

A side question, has everyone been credited back the "hold" the hotel put on our cards in addition to the actual expense? It has been a week now and it's still being held. I thought this was only supposed to be held for a few days.

No Hold was put on my Chase Card, they just charged me the full amount of $479.80

They put a $100 hold per night on your card. It might not be showing up as a charge yet, but there might be a hold. In my case, I used a debit card so I don't have access to those funds until they release the hold.

the full amount showed up Monday night when I got off the plane, and checked the Chase website that evening....

Secure payments seems to be one of the biggest land rushes in the tech industry lately. I've used (http://www.tabbedout.com/Tabbed Out), which looks similar to The Level Up. The biggest problem with these apps is the number of business who accept them. Small numbers, but growing, though mostly limited to the bar and restaurant industry currently. Also, don't lose your phone!

Of course I do, but I seldom use it. Why would I charge something that I can easily pay for from my regular checking account. It's also tied to my savings account that I can immediately have funds memo posted to the checking account if need be. I pay no monthly service fees for my accounts and pay no interest on my credit card as I NEVER carry a balance.
I guess I'm just "old school" where credit is concerned and since I'm looking to buy a home, I don't want to have debt outstanding. It's worked so far and see no need to change. :o Plus, I'm not entirely convinced my impulse shopping won't over-ride reason. Therefore, my regular bank CC is kept safely at home. ;D

Yup, I don't like to pay any interest as well, that hotel balance was just paid for right outta my checking account as I'm typing this
(direct deposit is FREE w/ my checking account) and CC companies HATE IT when the cannot make any extra $$$ outta you , so you might as well beat them @ their own game right, that is what I do ;)

Right ::) If you would come out of your Klonnie haze for a moment you would remember that I LOST my first card (separate account), along with my ID, the night i went to Cobalt with Joe twink. Then later found out that I had opened a tab and left the card there. That card was cancelled.
THIS card was skimmed and used fraudulently, and I didnt catch it till I was in Fredericksburg.
The only thing the twink did was give me teh Herps.

Most places in Killadelphia use that system. And like I said this new LevelUp feature for folks with smartphones is the bestest. You just flash this scan thing on your phone and the purchase amount is deducted from your checking account, and then a receipt is sent to you either by text or email.

I used this before, the receipt was emailed to my phone and was available right away ......
also I used something similar to this on the plane, all I had to do was swipe
my CC to watch-TV and to buy food & drinks on the long fight from DCA to DENVER :D

All of the hipster establishments in Philadelphia use LevelUp, and as we all know those are the only places I go to :) And from what I've read Filthy is one of, if not the largest, markets for LevelUp. (https://www.thelevelup.com/divisions/philadelphia/merchants)
They don't use it at the supermarket though, yet.
