11 week neg. still freakin
« on: October 14, 2012, 10:02:23 am »
Hi guys,
I had a very risky unprotected vaginal encounter w a younger lady I worked with a few months ago, in fact we did it twice in 1 meeting.  We had had the disease discussion beforehand and sne said that she was ok because she had been tested 2 months prior on her yearly and was fine. And that the only other person she had been in contact with was her husband...I know...well it ended badly when I told her I couldn't stomach the stress of the secret from my wife...again I know...afterwards of course I started 2 get the hiv willies and didn't feel quite rite...in fact I started to get every symptom in the book, night sweats, chills, sleeplessness the whole nine. Tested w a clearview finger prick at 2 weeks, negative. Tested again same test at 76 days, negative. The counselor said I was fine. But another guy there said maybe I should come back in 2 weeks..okay so that freaked me out...still symptoms. Called him back to ask if he could help me w a id doctor. Then he said I was just about to the window period, hiv was not the problem.  Went the next day at the 11 week mark to a walk in clinic and had a full blood draw taken thinking I would at least get a indeterminate, negative. Doctor said I was fine and was doin it to my self. Finally broke down and went to my doctor, showed her my blood work she said she was 99.9% sure I was fine but wanted to go by the book and retest in 4 weeks and again in 2 months after. Had to ask her to look down my throat and all, she told me I do not have hiv that it was depression,  guilt, and anxiety. Gave me anti depressants and sleeping pills. Recommended a counselor. Told the counselor my whole story and even she said as a former nurse. Practitioner I was fine and had ocd about the situation to get past it. So really am I just doing this all to my self? How good can I feel about an 11 week neg. Even w a list of symptoms. Nest test in 2 weeks it would def show up by then...so i'm stressing.....I know it's my own stupid fault, but is there any hope?

mlg,

If your symptoms had anything to do with hiv, you would have tested positive by now.

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, with the average time to seroconversion being only 22 days.

A six week negative is highly unlikely to change, but must be confirmed at the three month point.

You tested negative at eleven weeks and you really don't need further testing. Your result is not going to change in one week at this late stage. The doctor who told you to come in again after four weeks and again two months after that is going by a very old, outdated window period (six months). The window period has been three months for YEARS now. She needs to get up to date on her hiv testing.

Every single one of your symptoms can be caused by the stress of a guilty conscience. If you cannot get past this, get counseling.

You do NOT have hiv. Next time, put a condom on it before you go having intercourse outside your marriage.

Ann,
thank u so much for ur reply. I was hoping u would say that. I really just needed someone "in the know" to say it. At 43 u would think I would know better having had a dozen tests taken in my mid 20's during my wild single days, that I luckily came through. As far as my marriage, I have confessed everything and we are currently taking counseling togethe. For some reason this time seemed so real. I guess the thought of having ruined not only my future, but that of my 6 year old son was too much to bear...again I know. I never thought of all that could be at risk from 1 stupid incident. Any way I still get the heebies everytime I take anykind of blood test but I have ur words that made me feel much better...wish us luck...and again thanx...

I agree completely with Ann. There is no sound reason to expect other than another negative test result.
