just found out I am pregnant
« on: May 06, 2010, 07:44:29 pm »
I just found out I am pregnant and am currently on truvada & isentress.  Is this something anyone would suggest not taking.  I see that both this and kaletra are class c and have adverse reactions in animals.  What are your suggestions?

Seek medical attention. Read this.

From the Truvada Lesson:

Truvada is classified by the FDA as a pregnancy category B drug. Pregnancy category B means that animal studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. HIV-positive women who become pregnant should discuss the benefits and possible side effects of HIV treatment to help protect their babies from HIV

Also, congratulations if having a baby is what you wanna do. :)

My wife was on Truvada during her pregnancy and the baby was fine.  Her gynecologist switched her meds  from Zerit, Viread, and Viramune ( I think) to Truvada.  Have you talked to your gynecologist yet, if so what have they suggested?

Thank you all.  I have spoken to my regular Dr. who has told me that truvada is ok.  I am more worried about the isentress.  I only found out Wed. that I was pregnant and did the blood yesterday which showed I was and am about 4 weeks. She gave me the name for a high risk ob/gyn which I will be calling today to get an appointment.  I did have to stop alot of other meds which I hope will not affect me to bad.  I was on wellbutrin, serequel and ambien.  What a horrible night sleep last night too.

Congratulations :-) My baby is now 5 months old.  I hope you have a smooth pregnancy.  I took Azt, viread and kaletra (although I was not on medication before and I'm not on it now - it was just for the pregnancy).  Your doctor will be able to advise you - are you already undetactable?  I never quite got there in time so had to have a c-section.

Thanks Joel.
Tabooprincess- I spoke to my Dr. and she said I can do either but looking at the information they both look like a class c medication although the isentress has no data reports done so I would be like a lab rat and I am not sure I want to do that.  Congrats on your baby.  Did you have the baby on the medication for the 6 weeks and rechecked etc?  I would have had to have a c-section either way.  I have 2 children already and those two were c-section so at this point I had to have one.
I am not undetectable, I usually hover around 140 but my last labs I jumped to 1000.  I am wondering if it had something to do with it may have been right when I got pregnant so my body went out of whack!  I was on atripla and actually switched because I was having trouble with it anyway so it happened right at a good time.  This was very unexpected and we are scared.

  Fran,

I spoke to my wife earlier and she said she was on the same regimen Taboo was taking, Kaletra and Viread.  We did give the baby AZT for the first 6 weeks, she never showed a positive PCR (i think it was), and the she handled the AZT very well; the dosage was either every 4 or 6 hours, I can't remember which.

Fran-

I don't know a darn thing about various drugs and pregnancy, but I just wanted to congratulate you on being a newly expectant mother. It must be quite exciting! I hope for you the best for a healthy pregnancy!  ;D

No Fran, don't listen to him.  Name your child: Thomas for a boy or Thomasina for a girl. ;)

Congratulations on the new baby. The Body lists Kaletra & Combivir for expecting mothers who have not been on meds before. But since you have it could make a difference.

My baby had to have triple meds for 4 weeks (perhaps it's shorter here in the UK I don't know) - triple meds because I wasn't undetectable at the birth (I managed to get down to around 200) and I had the AZT drip before and during the c-section.  First 2 tests are negative, we're waiting on results from the 3rd.

He didn't mind the AZT but he HATED the kaletra, it was really horrible having to give that to him :-(

I hope you don't although I had horrendous squits with it - at first it was quite a novelty because I'd become increasingly constipated with the pregnancy but it soon got tiresome.  I actually lost weight during my pregnancy (which isn't too concerning becasue I'm overweight anyway) but just keep an eye on it.

I found found out I was pregnant as well as HIV positive at the same time. I started taking Combivir and Viracept. Then my ID doctor switched me to Kaletra and Combivir because of the adverse affects Viracept would have on the baby. I didn't have any problems with the Kalretra/Combivir. I was undetectable in 3 months and I didn't have to have a C-Section. I had a wonderful pregnancy and birth. I have been off of meds since 2/26/08. I am doing very well and my child is negative.
