My Christmas Miracle
« on: December 12, 2006, 06:47:39 pm »
I thought my cocoons had expired.  Imagine my surprise when I came home today to find my butterflies emerging!  Nature is as amazing as it is scary!  The first photo is a little guy who had just come out, his wings are still a littled folded up.  As he started to dry, I moved him to a milkweed bloom so if he didn't want take off tonight, he'd have something to eat in the morning.

Amazingly, 7 of 8 caterpillars successfully cocooned. The 8th may have made it, I just don't know where he is.  I have 3 more caged, and 2 more under a windowsill, and their skins are getting dark and clear; you can even see the wing pattern through some of them.

I want to shout like Frosty, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

Creighton

That's awesome.  Butterflys are so beautiful, I love seeing them in my yard.

How do you know the one is a "guy"?  Did you, uhum, LOOK?   ::)

Well, his entire body is spotted, his head too, and I've never seen a Monarch like that, so he's definitely "queer," which = "guy" in my book. Plus the way he was curling his tongue out, I could tell he wanted me.

Well it turns out that all Monarchs (butterflies, you perv) have spotted bodies, I guess I'm always looking at the curtains, not the window.

RAB, it turns out he is a boy, as is the second one I released today. I went on the Internet and learned how to "sex" butterflies.

They had a peculiar smell, though, almost like camphor, or mothballs, but I'm not sure as we don't us those in the South.

Have any of you ever smelled mothballs?

Mothballs smell like wet dogs.

The Monarchs are beautiful.  What a lovely way to celebrate the holidays.

Creighton,

One advice : go to Mexico and watch the billions of Monarchs awake in the sunshine, after a night rest in the trees.
I had the privilege to watch that wonder when I was still flying.

One sad note : I heard their number had decreased considerably due to global warming.

Listen carefully....he may very soon be whispering "daaaaaaddy"

love you

I'm glad they made it, I know you were a bit worried about them and the cold at one stage...they really are beautiful, my garden is full of them right now.

Of course the spotted one wants you....but then again who wouldn't ... ;)
