Home HIV Test Going To FDA For Approval, Among Other News
« on: April 20, 2012, 12:42:10 am »
I remember I posted about a year or so ago that I wondered why we didn't already have a quick, mouth swab HIV test for home use.  If I remember correctly, most of the replies were against this.  Most said things like you wouldn't have counseling at home or a trick could still be in the window period and would lead to false security.  I certainly didn't get any kind of counseling at the hospital.  I felt the benefits vastly outweighed those negatives.  I felt this could possibly save so many people from becoming infected.  If I had this kind of home test, I don't think I would be on this site right now writing this.  And, this wouldn't just be helpful in the heat of the moment.  We know many people, especially in smaller towns, are reluctant to ask their doc for an HIV test.  And, many are reluctant to go to the health department for testing, for fear someone may see them there.  So, I hope the FDA approves this.  I would hope the test would come with contact info with phone numbers to find counseling and medical attention in your specific town or city.  I really don't know why it has taken so long, since these oral tests have been available for a while now and have a really high accuracy.

"Finally, on May 15, the FDA’s Blood Products Advisory Committee will meet to evaluate data supporting the approval of OraQuick’s In-Home HIV antibody test. This is the first time a complete home-use rapid HIV test has been submitted to the agency for approval."

The full article discusses other HIV/FDA things happening in May.

I think it's a natural progression and time for it to be approved.  If you look back (back in the day) there was a time when you had to sign a waiver agreeing to an HIV test.  My last HIV test I didn't have to sign a waiver, in fact The test was ordered after a phone conversation with my doctor.  I had not even gone in.

And not too long ago you had to go in person to get an HIV test result.  Again at my last HIV test, my doctor had called me and gave me my result over the phone (my positive result no less).

My point is..things take time and do change and progress.  Sometimes people have a hard time thinking any change will be beneficial or predict doom when new policies are offered.  I'm sure in just a few years time after this test is approved people will look back and wonder what the bid deal was about.

I'm all for it also.

thank goodness things do change with time. I just took a trip down memory lane while watching "We were here". It was interesting to hear again about the times I lived through when the statistics up until the mid-90s where that about 70% of the population thought quarantining pozzies into HIV camps was the way to go to deal with this disease. When you think how that was only about 15 yrs ago, it's no wonder taking the test required signatures, waivers, special permission, and counseling afterwards. It's also no wonder that many people were (and are still) afraid/leery to get tested.

I'm all for the home test though. I know it's going to cause our dear Ann a lot more work over in AMI? but just like I think it takes all kinds of advertising to get out the prevention message to everyone, I think whatever works to get people to test is the way to go in the long run.
