Norvir Tablet instead of Capsule
« on: August 23, 2010, 04:14:42 pm »
I went to pick up my meds today and the Norvir didn't come from the refriderator.  That threw me off, but apparently the Norvir I am getting now is a tablet instead of a capsule and shouldn't be refrigerated.  Kind of nice because it is a lot smaller and less of a hassle to not have to keep it cold, but I don't like change when it comes to this type of thing.  I will probably feel like I am forgetting to do something every day for the next few months, lol.  Obviously this should be the same thing and I shouldn't have to change or worry about anything, but has anyone else had experience with this?  Anything that I should know that maybe they didn't tell me at the health department (they aren't very informative when it comes to my meds there).  I would really appreciate any comments or advice.

Hi Scotty87,

From my understanding, it's exactly the same.

Just a new "improved" version that does not need to be refrigerated.

Cheers....

Yes, technically it's the same, however I for one experienced not so pleasant things when I went on it and went back to the old gel cap within three weeks.  However, I've not heard of anyone else here taking issue with it so if I were you I'd just go ahead with it.

it actually has a slightly higher strength, which may account for some gastro issues when you change over, but it is basically the same drug

got my new norvir today and took it this evening  ;D
had to take a bunch of immodium too which I normally don't have to do :(
i'm hoping this is just the "getting adjusted" to it's greater strength phase  ;)

NORVIR tablets are not bioequivalent to NORVIR capsules. Under moderate fat conditions (857 kcal; 31% fat, 13% protein, 56% carbohydrates), when a single 100 mg NORVIR dose was administered as a tablet compared with a capsule, AUC(0- ∞) met equivalence criteria but mean Cmax [maximum plasma] was increased by 26%
(by the way, within 5 days I was over my gastro issues and I've loved the new tabs every since; but then I really, really hated the gelcaps)

you might want to check out our thread "FDA Approves Heat-Stable Norvir Tablets " when we discussed the change-over from the gelcaps to tablets many of us experienced back at the first of the year. (you're just late to the party. LOL :D )

I love my pudgy little Norvir's, I would rather stay on them than change to the tablet (if it aint broke dont fix it) I hope my pharmacist doesnt pull the switcheroo on me when I go for refills in a couple of days.

But Scotty, keep us updated on how the tablet goes.

I'm quite certain that at some point they will stop making the gel caps.

I was so excited about the new Norvir because I like to get my prescriptions through the mail (all14 of them) and they couldn't mail the gels cuz they'd melt so I had to go to the pharmacy for that one med. Ive been taking it for a couple weeks and havn't noticed any difference.
