Title: Is it an early HIV symptom?
Post by: hlalayan on December 10, 2007, 08:45:17 am
Hello to all.
I really need some help to prevent myself getting crazy.

I had a sex with another man partner two weeks ago. I undertook all to call it safe sax. We did not have any anal act. Both of us had unprotected oral sex, mouth kissing and mutual masturbation (he ejaculated on my hand).
As many sources confirm all this sexual activities carry low risk to HIV.
But after one week I had some pain around my groin (only on right side). I do not feel any enlargement in that area. And sometimes I feel very short and sharp pain. Even yesterday I felt that the pain comes from the joint of my right leg. That uncomfortable feeling in right site of groin is still bothers me after two weeks.
After 10 days of the “risk”,  I started to feel pain in my back, legs and hands.
No other symptoms so far. I am really confused. At the beginning I felt that it is lymph nodes (but there is no any enlargement), as described in early symptoms of HIV. But if it is so, should it be also with the pain and only on one side? I do not have any flue like symptoms and other ones described in early HIV symptoms?

Please help to understand

You didn't have a risk so what ever is going on has nothing to do with HIV.

You need to discuss your symptoms with your doctor. Nothing you did put you at risk for HIV transmission. And you need to know that neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything accurately about your HIV status if you have had a genuinely risky incident. Only testing at 13 weeks can give you that answer.

But you DID NOT have a risky incident. Whatever is going on symptomatically is not HIV-specific and in your case has nothing to do with HIV. Talk to your doctor and find out what's really up.

Thank you for reply.
I did actually contacted the HIV prevention center in our small country and asked about the timeline I need to be tested, they told me 6 months. I really can not wait so long. Can I just go to the center and ask for being testes just after 13 weeks? Will it be reliable?

Well you can ask to be tested at 13 weeks and be confident of the result. Since you were not at risk, that result will be negative.

That suggestion you received to test out to six months is long outdated. The tests currently in use give an accurate result at 13 weeks. The only exceptions are for a small number of those who are either IV drug users or have severely impaired immune systems due to cancer treatment or some other such major illness. Since you have mentioned either of those factors I am assuming they don't apply to you.

So you can get a reliable result at 13 weeks although I have already told you that you weren't at risk. If you're getting tested it's only for peace of mind and a negative result based on what you have reported is a foregone conclusion.

Thanks for encouraging me.
I am not sure what type of test do they use. I am afraid of having outdated methods of testing in my country.
But will defiantly go for testing after 12 weeks.

hlalayan,

It won't matter what generation of test is used at the three month point.

Like the others, I'm expecting a negative result.

Considering you didn't mention what small country it is, I can't discount that the testing technology might be out of date or even not that sensitive to begin with, but with the symptoms and risk you mentioned, I wouldn't be too worried.

Posters talking about the 13 week period need to remember that countries set their own controls on testing technology and with stock outs and quality control issues, it can vary considerably.  I'm reminded of the issues in the U.S. before with people ordering home test kids over the internet which were not FDA approved and not up to our QC standards for testing.

Thank you all very much,

I am trying of not reading the sections about the symptoms described on the interned but the ones I have even two weeks ago getting me crazy.
I still have the uncomfortable feeling in my right groin side. This is almost more than a week I have that. Yesterday I had running nose and a little sore throat.
The back side of my legs still have the pain. My lower part of the back also is in pain.
I know you will tell me that all this is something else. (I HOPE SO), but how long the early symptoms of HIV can last?

hlalayan,

We don't discuss symptoms here because symptoms or even the LACK of symptoms mean nothing when it comes to hiv infection. Nothing. Only testing will reliably reveal your status.

Go to your doctor to find out what, if anything, is going on with you. Whatever it is, it isn't hiv as you did NOT have a risk.
