Fiber laxatives and meds
« on: October 19, 2007, 08:26:20 am »
Hi everybody, I am taking Atripla and have a question which may be no big deal but wanted to get reassurance. I take it at night, around 10pm. In the morning, I have been taking Metamucil fiber (the one in powder form, you mix with water) to relieve the slight constipation I usually have.

Is there any question of the Metamucil reducing the Atripla absorption? The instructions state to take the Metamucil at least 2 hours before or after any medication to reduce the chance of malabsorption. There is a good 12 hours between the two, and I have been taking only one glass a day, rather than the suggested 3. Just a little of bit of extra fiber which is usually missing in my diet.

Seems I am not at any risk here, correct? Thanks all, J.

You're doing it correctly...taking it two hours before and after any medications.  Metamucil (well grocery store brands for me...same thing at half the cost) has been helpful keeping things balanced...seems to correct both diarrhea as well as constipation.  I take two tablesspoons in water each morning (two hours after medications.)
