Title: $50,00 Sweepstakes Winner
Post by: Miss Philicia on May 11, 2012, 05:52:29 pm
fucked up my first post about this :(

>>>> ANYWAY

It's two separate entities with enclosed check (initial payment) of $3800 and saying I won a sweepstakes worth $50,000.

Then there's a totally separate letter saying I'm due $39,587.91 from a check I was sent a year ago as a refund for overpayment of medication prescriptions, from an entity called Prescription Solutions in California.  Of course, I don't pay anything for my medications so this makes no sense. In fact, last autumn I spent considerable time talking to a half dozen idiots in a myriad of companies trying to figure out how/why this check was sent to me. And now a year later they're sending me another letter asking why I never cased the check. The letter states that they're "very worried" that I neve received the check for that gargantuan amount as it's never been cased by their bank.

Well yeah, I was afraid to cash it. I wonder if I cased it, then opened a separate bank account with it and didn't use it for a decade if there is a "statute of limitations" after which I can go to town with the $39,587.91 ????

Assuming the check is real and doesn't have any text or contract, etc., on the reverse side, I'd cash the sucker.  I do wonder if Walgreens operates in the UK, but all that matters is if the check goes through.

Sound like some kinda fraud or scam, if you cash it, you could be liable to that fraud or whatever scam it might be, I doubt it's real and I don't think it will clear your bank...

Just the other day, I received 2 text messages telling me I won a contest at Best Buy and contact them immediately to claim my prize.  I spoke with a manager from the local store to find, Best Buy was not having any such contest and if I respond to the text, they will know, my number is active.  I blocked my phone from any future texts.

Miss P, I believe you can cash that check.. The lady will probably instruct you to deposit the $3800.00 into an account, give them the account numbers so they can transfer the rest of the money to your account.

When the bank discovers the check to be counterfeit, they will want their $3800 back and since Walgreens did not send the check, your bank will be all over you for repayment.  When i won Publishers Clearing House, my prize was the opportunity to purchase a mink coat for $300 or a sewing machine for $300 but Mr. Ed McMahon never came to my door   8)  Have the best day

Remember last year when I received yet another check from a place called Prescription Solutions in the amount of $39,587.91 dated 6/20/2011 and made all of these call about it and they never could figure out the error? Well... also last month I received another letter about that same mount wondering why I'd not cased it, and to reply to the letter saying if I had lost it. They want me to sign it to send another check in that mount.

So in all that is 89,587.91 -- it's all so confusing.

If I cash these checks and then don't spend it then it will sit in my bank account, and I guess would effect the public programs I'm on for my heath related services so I don't know what to do.

I'm wondering if I can sign them over to my parents in Virginia and have them put in CDs or something, or I should go talk to my case manager. I find this all confusing

Can I open up a Cyman Islands account to hid it like Mitt Romney?

So, going through my mail I have a letter dated 23 April 2012 with an attached check of $3800, valid for 90 days drawn on Walgreens

The attache letter says says I am a winner in the "Consumers Promotion Sweepkstakes Drawing in the US and UK. It says that I am entitled  to a guaranteed sum of $50,000 (certified check) which will be delivered to me by FedEx or UPS.

I'm supposed to contact some woman with her listed phone number

I wonder what happens if I cash the $3800 check

Ms. P. I seem to recall you had a similar situation last year or before about whether to cash a check that unexpectedly came your way.  What's your secret?  ;)

So if I cash this does it count as income and then have to pay taxes?

If it's a real check and it clears your bank, then YES, you will have to pay the taxes on that 50K

Actually the first check is $3860 and the 1,950 taxes have already been taken out. But it then says I will receive $50,000 later in the sweepstakes which after taxes would probably be half that.

The other payment is for overpayment in calendar year 2010 (and I was in ADAP then) so I'm not even sure if that is taxable... though obviously I fail to undertand that it's my money - it seems like a error, and I called repeatedly to say so, but I got and endless 2 month run around and was sent to department after department and they could never account the error, and now it's a year later and suddenly they think they still owe it to me. I'd love to cash it but don't want the IRS suddenly saying I owe money five years from now. I guess I could deposit it in the Puerto Rico and buy a condo.

That 50K sounds like a scam, however that ADAP one.....well, have you considered speaking with someone in legal-aide..unless you want to spring for the price & cost of  a lawyer ...........if you do get a lawyer they will probably take 1/3 of it if it's a real check.........dunno

I do wonder if Walgreens operates in the UK, but all that matters is if the check goes through.

They don't. Walmart does - they operate as ASDA here. This makes me wonder if it isn't a scam and the scammers weren't bright enough to differentiate between Walgreens and Walmart.

I suppose I should take these checks to my bank and have them investigate, don't you think?

I would - either the bank or the cops.

Remember the old adage; if it sounds too good to be true, it probably IS too good to be true.

Bummer, eh? It would be sweet if it's for real, but I doubt it. If it IS real and you don't use a portion of the dosh to come and visit the Rock, I'll be forced to disown you. :-*

Joe

No, we have at least 10 Walgreens in Philadelphia -- in fact just last week my own pharmacy (Bioscript) became a Walgrees. There are about 100 of them in Pennsylvania alone.

Joe was wondering if Walgreens operates in the UK - you know, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. I think most people know they operate in every US state.

I'm going to take all of these two scam letters into my case manager when I go see my HIV specialist on Wednesday and see what she says. Of course she'll say to ignore them, but I should document it and send it into the Better Business Bureau or something don't you think?

Sure would be great to suddenly have $89,587.91 -- I could buy a house!

Miss P, you are worthy of having good luck but unfortunately this check business reeks of scam. Even more so because it's happened more than once to you.

Have you considered calling the Legal Aid Society or another similar service organization that can give you advice? I would not endorse and deposit anything until you have some solid legal counsel.

Figures don't lie but liars can figure and there's a whole lot of scamming going on out there.

Yes, I will speak to my case manager and she'll probably send me to AIDS Law Project of PA, which is located just a couple blocks from my HIV clinic.

That's a good move.

Despite doubts I'm totally willing for that lump of money to be for real.

... from my first post in this thread (and I screwed up that first post below explaining this scam when I wrote this current post -- SORRY!), per instruction in the letter

I'm supposed to contact some woman with her listed phone number

Surprise -- I called a dozen times and every time it rang five times and then I got a screeching busy signal. ::)
