Haldol for Insomnia?
« on: March 09, 2007, 01:53:12 pm »
Hi All..
Been away for a bit but still hanging in. Got good news that cd4 up to 77 this week. Anyhow, like many insomnia is huge! Dr. told me that Norvir blocks alot of the "sleepers" in the liver. (Explains why 20mg of Ambien didnt work!) So anyhow, he prescribed 2mg of Haldol. I'm a bit leary of the drug.. for Petes sake, I'm not psychotic... in the clinical sense  :)  But I am truly concerned about using it as a seditative.  Any thoughts?

Thanks so much..

Erm, back to school doc

If anything Norvir increases the duration of Ambien (zolpidem) in the body rather than blocks it

"When ritonavir is coadministered with zolpidem, plasma concentrations of zolpidem may be increased and a decrease in dose may be needed. The magnitude and therapeutic consequences of this interaction cannot be predicted with any certainty.  Norvir Prescribing Information, Abbott Laboratories, April 2005." etc

Haldol is a strong drug and I see no reason to live on it when (a) you could try a higher dose of Ambien (b) try another alternative. However, some people like it, it's kinda trippy on occasions, and does kinda work.  It is widely prescribed (without any studies to support its use but to great effects) for meth withdrawal.  2mg is kinda high as a staring dose for a sleep aid though. Esp given a possible interaction with Norvir which extends the dose length, a lower starting point may be advisable.

"Due to the potential for significant elevation of serum levels of this medicine [Haldol, haloperidol], it should not be used concomitantly with ritonavir without a careful assessment of the potential risks and benefits. Careful monitoring of therapeutic and adverse effects is recommended when concomitantly administered with ritonavir. Norvir Summary of Product Characteristics, Abbott Laboratories Ltd, January 2005."

Hi  Brian here.  Just a recommendation or 2 to try and help.  Try a glass of warm milk, not hot...yes remember when you were a kid.  Warming it activates L-tryptophane, a natural sedative, and not narcotic!  Also remember after thanksgiving dinner, stuffing yourself with turkey, and wanting a nap?  Same ingredient.  As far as meds go, it's all relative   check with your MD  there are a few new ones on the market including Lunesta and Rozorem, both claim to be non-addicting.  Good luck.

Thanks so much guys. Script is filled, but still looking at options. Have pretty much exhausted non narcotic avenues as well. And of course, Lunesta and Rozorem are not covered on my insurance formulary. The biggest issue is neuropathy and RLS. If it weren't for the convulsive, twitching, burning etc.. I would sleep like a baby. Tonight its Sleepytime Tea, Melatonin and a visit from Mary Jane.
