Oh My.. I had to stay after class
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:35:08 pm »
I went with my puppy to puppy class today, she was the tallest dog, and extremely nervous and growling, and when the instructor told everyone to let off the leash, this lasted 30 second before she jumped on the cutest smallest poodle mix, which must have weighted about 1 1/2 pound, and bite her. She barked and tried to bite all the other dogs for the entire hour. So the trainer wanted to "talk to me after class". Imagine that. I haven't had this happen to me since school  :o

My dog is ultra possessive, all was triggered by a toy she wanted. And every time the trainer was giving attention to another one mine would bark like crazy. I have to teach my dog manners, yes she can sit, stay, down, pee on command and marvelous things, but she has an attitude.

Yes, yes, yes it's actually work to train a dog. Now is the time for laying the foundation for a well-behaved dog  family member. The reward of your labors will be worth the control and satisfaction at a later point in time. Remember a little helpful training code: PPP. The three P's are: Persistence, Patience, Praise. Praise after every successful delivery of a command or completion of a task. Make it a big deal--not just a verbal thingy. She needs to grasp that you are so damn excited and emotional about the simplist of tasks that she has done for you. She wants to please the food source. She will develop, in stages, to wanting to please your heart. Kapeesh?

milker, socializing a dog is very important unless you are wanting a guard dog. I start socializing my pups young before weening and then after their first set of shot I start socializing them with other dogs. Socialization makes a big difference.

I had Cheech in training classes when he was about 3yo.  A little late, but still, was looking to do something shortly after my husband had passed.  The instructor had about a dozen of us go around and around in a big ring with our dogs at our sides.  Cheech keep biting the ass of the dog in front of us.  He's lucky he didn't get his ass kicked!  Needless to say, we dropped out after about 3 wks, lol.  He is 13-1/2 now, and very protective of his Mommy.  He's an Australian Shep.

I agree with RR.  Only in the past few years have I let him around more people.  The dog will get a big vibe off of you, so make sure you try to relax when introducing her to others!  Also, like Mike said, act like its Christmas EVERY time the dog does something right or even when she does her business during a walk!  You'll thank yourself later!

Woof!

Absolutely, but I was under the impression that I had to wait 2 more weeks before going to the dog park as she's going to have her last shot in 2 weeks. I really want to go to the dog park to socialize!  8)

lol Dan!

Rapid, thank you SO MUCH. This went so well. I went to a park that is fenced and known to have responsible owners. She was a bit overwhelmed at first but she was not the one in control this time. I took her completely off leash after about 45mn and she wouldn't go far from me, but had more opportunity to sniff other dog's ass and lick their mouths. There was one dog that she was very scared of, that was the only time she barked, but in a "omg omg please don't hurt me" type of bark..

Tomorrow, dog's beach!

i know this sounds kinda harsh,,, but you have to do this to dogs that get aggressive with other dogs.

1. make sure that s/he knows that YOU are the master and s/he is not allowed to be aggressive with anyone else because only YOU are allowed to do so.

2. whenever your dog gets in any way aggressive, immediately grab top of its neck and wrestle him or her down on the back, looking directly in the eyes, with a threatening command not to do so.

my lab who was an absolute nightmare when i first got her, is now very very well behaved dog.

It sounds like things are moving along just fine, Milkie. I'm at a loss about training a dog, cats are my passion and seems much easier to train. My cat seems to recognize things from my tone of voice. He is a house cat but knows how to open the door if it isn't locked...I swear to the Goddess, it's true. A few times  my neighbors had to bring him back because I didn't realize he was gone. I think I will try to train him to walk with a harness.

Milker,

May I suggest a book?  How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend by the Monks of New Skete.  Both the original version, from 1978, and a newer one are available online (I just checked).

When I got my first dog, while I was in college mmmmmppphh years ago, she had a ton of aggression problems.  This book took me on an eye-opening journey into her head... what she was thinking... why she responded certain ways... why she insisted on chewing the kitchen cabinets and my fabu new shoes.

Short of the long is that I still have it in my book case and refer to it every now and then.  Using the insights in the book, I've managed to maintain a great companionship with my dogs over the years and find that, regardless of the dog, the ideas work.

Just ask the Lab dozing at my feet right now.

Best of luck and maybe we'll run into each other at the dog beach.  Look for the slightly portly Lab saying "howdy" to all the other dogs.  She's quite the socialite!   :D

Egello,

I'm actually in the LA area but indulge my dogs' passion for car rides by hauling them to dog beaches up & down the coast.  For them it has little to do with the sand & surf... it's all about the ride, the play, and the coma-like nap on the ride back.  The setting is more for my enjoyment.

Now if I could just find that nude dog beach that Dan mentioned   :o

thanks all for your comments. egello I used that technique when she used to bite hard when too excited and not responding to the usual command. This worked wonder, I see she's trying hard to avoid biting me while playing now. I thought about doing it at the puppy class but I wanted to get the trainer to see her "in action" so that she (the trainer) would know exactly what triggered this and how to stop it because I had never seen her like this, which is normal since she never had to share toys before!

Queen, it's time to put cameras in your house, your cat will be become a star on youtube :D

Topher, Mike, thanks I will look for that book!

Bonnie is chewing on a bone right now, I wish I was chewing on one too  ;D

Wow what a change for puppy class round #2.

This week I got her to the dog park every day + 1 or 2 hours walk each day + dog beach and before the puppy class today 1 hour of dog park, throwing balls  ::) at her she was exhausted and I was exhausted myself. She barked once during the class, instead of barking for the entire hour. She tried to bite another dog only once, but was responding to that dog getting over excited. So I'm very proud of what I achieved to get her to socialize and stop biting and growling. It was an exhausting week but worth the training. She got a new toy tonight and she's playing with it right now. The trainer was impressed and we're good for other classes.

"she's a bit too smart" said the trainer, but hey she's like her daddy, smart & final :D (US joke)

Milker (who is exhausted)

/edited for typo/

She is a rebel! Sounds like my type of dog. I think she will do great!!! She a real bitch and she lives up to the name!
