to someplace warmer... I've worked really hard over the past three years refining my work skills at a casino. But I want to live in a place that doesn't suffer from horrible midwestern winters, has a decently large gay community, and where being poz won't be such a scandal.
Right now, I'm living in the ass end of Iowa, and it's so boring, and I think I'm one of the only out gay people (I think there are two of us) in a 50 mile radius.
I was thinking Palm Springs, Denver, Baton Rouge, Miami? any ideas? advice? experience?

People from the midwest seem to like the Orlando FL area.
Lots of gay people, warm and sunny all year long, cheap housing costs, and surprisingly gay friendly.
-
I'm the biggest advocate for Seattle. Mild winters, mild summers. Surrounded by mountains and water, there's never a shortage of things to do here. And there are TONS of casinos around!
The sunshine might be more scarce than other places, but it doesn't nearly rain as much as people say it does.
I wasn't born or raised here, but I consider Seattle my home now.

The Seminole Hard Rock Casino is located in Hollywood, Florida (about 10 miles from Miami and 10 miles from Fort Lauderdale, Florida) - Very gay friendly area. there are 6 other casinos in the area. The regular Seminole, The Hard Rock, The Mardi Gras, Calder, The Isle, Gulf Stream --- lots of them in South Florida and all within about 10 miles of each other. FYI: It is about 95 degrees here today - (I'm in Miami) with a feels like temp of over 100.

I would suggest Fag Laudergayle, but if memory serves me well you should know something about living in that city ::)
-
Because everyone here is pimpin' their home town, I will kindly suggest Harrah's Casino (http://www.harrahschester.com/) in lovely Chester, PA. Chester, PA is located five miles south of the Philadelphia airport, and 12 miles south of downtown Philadelphia. Philadelphia was just rated by Travel & Leisure as the second filthiest city in the US, which is why we call it Filthydelphia. But Chester is even more special -- it's probably 100 times nastier, probably because it was first settled by the Finnish (1644 no less) instead of Godly Quakers. In fact, the only worse place would be Camden, NJ. Don't believe me? OK, here's downtown Chester:

Undoubtedly you will save money on living expenses, so it's really win/win. And the cold, chilly winter? Who cares when you're living in paradise? And if you get bored Atlantic City is only an hour away, and the beach there comes free with an ample supply of used, dirty syringes. There used to be a 24-hour gay club too, not sure if it's still there, but when you put the words "gay" together with "24 hours" you can rest assured they don't just drink Redbull.
ps: I dare anyone to top my suggestion.

Hmm....now I kinda wanna move there.

My my... indeed I spoke to soon! Seems that just last month the first resort with a all gay nightclub (http://www.atlanticcityweekly.com/arts-and-entertainment/nightlife/Gay-Club-Opens-at-Resorts-Prohibition-122015174.html) just opened up in A.C. And not only that, but the city has just been named one of the Top Five Up & Coming Gay Destinations (http://blogs.atlanticcityweekly.com/ac-central/2011/06/14/a-gay-old-time-in-atlantic-city/). How utterly thrilling! And Perez Hilton is hosting the Pride Party in a couple of weeks.
And don't forget, you can get a Stepford-ish gay "civil union" in New Jersey now, and what better place than A.C.?

I second Phil with moving to FTL. There are tons of casinos in the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood area. It has a faster growing gay community than Miami, yet MIA is still close enough for you to drive to if you feel like putting on your Sunday best and acting gayer than usual lol. The FTL gay scene is very casual and laid back... almost to a fault because it's hard to meet other motivated friends, but overall it's wonderful.
I took the blind leap to move here 5 yrs ago and haven't doubted my decision for a second. I can honestly say I am a FL guy for life.

I dunno. When I went there, it wasn't so much casual and laid back as it was strung out and shot out.
That is not to say that I didn't find it wonderful, of course.

HAHAHAHA lmfao... that is so true... its an eclectic mix for sure! But in comparison MIA is very much the "be seen" scene.

Oh, no. I very much more of the "let's try not to be seen" set.

Me too... my nights out tend to start out that way but usually by evenings end (and after 3 or 8 goose/redbulls) I am crawling on the bar and yelling at people for stupid haircuts... discretely ofcourse

I love Seattle. If my partner could work out of there I would push to move back. I also love San Deigo but cannot afford to live there. Forget anywhere in North or South Carolina.
-
You can find cheap housing in areas of Miami such as: Overtown, Liberty City, and Opa Locka. These same areas also hold some of the greatest flea markets to buy stolen 2nd hand goods at affordable prices. I'm talkin like $10 for a 52 inch DLP TV cheap.
-
New Orleans! I wouldn't move to Baton Rouge if I were you.

lolwut. I could have sworn that just the other day you were wiping your filthy shoes on those Big City queers and stompin' back to Natchez.

Your joking right? I live in Seattle also and I have to dissagree. The weather here totally sucks. It rains ALL the time. Its June and its still cold. Plus he said he was looking for someplace cheap.

You forgot to mention the lovely Allapatah and the ever-classy Goulds (where you can see working gals struttin' their stuff at any given time). Little Haiti and Hialeah have some nice spots as well and offer a culturally diverse experience, especially for a gay male.
-
Have you considered Chengdu? I hear they're short on ear pickers.

You really want me to go there with this topic?

so cal is where it's at. you have palm springs, san diego, west hollywood, long beach and los angeles all within an hour or two of each other. we are also littered with up and coming casinos.
best,

Everyone knows that WeHo queers are the worst ones in the entire world. Seriously.

if you use ADAP to help obtain your medications, do NOT move to any state with a waiting list. ;)

Please do.

Thanks for that ADAP advice. good to consider.
I did spend some time in Ft. Lauderdale, it's true. And, while I loved the area, and the people, at the time the money just wasn't plentiful enough for me.
I've also spent a couple of weekends in Palm Springs. I loved it there, too. I had a couple of layovers in Phoenix and in Denver. and didn't get to see much of them.
I have another friend trying to get me to move to phoenix. it does sound kinda like my place. :/
I'm just so indecisive. And now, I have Fatty Tuna in tow. There are so many places I'd like to be, but I don't really have the opportunity to travel them all first.
Fatty Tuna:

its a good thing the long beach hoes and palm springs queers are more down to earth. there's a time and a place for all gayness. we call that area so cal!

ZOMG it's NOT cold. I was outside today in shorts, tshirt and flip flops.
Every time I hear someone complain about the summers here, I am reminded of the summer I spent in Houston and find comfort I now live here full time.
:)

Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, it's very gay and you can find cheap affordable safe housing :)
-
Every city has its good and bad points. Why not look for your dream job in a casino somewhere in the south and move to where you get hired? If you rise up with a good company, you could probably also work abroad in tropical climates.

I don't know why they'd think it was so bad; look at all that greenspace... between the cracks in the sidewalk!

While the idea of Seattle sounds interesting, my experience from the spring here, in Iowa, is that my wrist is developing a painful arthritis that is sensitive to the weather. That's why I was thinking somewhere warm... I guess I'm getting old. :(
-
Take Liberty City off the list:

Denver would be my first. I'm not sure what the gay scene in Denver is like, but I hear in Boulder it's good.
The weather is good all year long. Just stay under 12,000 ft.
You probably wouldn't want to go any farther north then Longmont, there isn't any gay scene up north, if there is it's well hidden, most of the gay guys I knew went to Denver or Boulder.
On the Pa. subject, Philly would be my choice, although there is a Casino at Penn National up by Harrisburg.
Colorado has better weather though.

EEEEEK You and I were born in the same year. You BETTAH not be callin' us old. Not yet anyway. :)
-
I spent two years in Phoenix with the airlines. The city is young and vibrant, but ZOMG I couldn't stand the 9-month summers there. I know you said you wanted somewhere warm. Phoenix is HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!
I was born and raised in West Covina, California. You might find parts of the San Gabriel Valley to be affordable, and it would satisfy your condition for being somewhere warm.
-
How about cruise ship,s they do that casino thing, don,t they?
My own experience off casinos contains both abject boredom and extreme fear in Northern Cyprus, L.V. and a small town on the ridge off Death Valley where every building except the Motel was on wheels. Though the extremely fat chain smoking receptionist was on wheels as she had a motorised wheel chair and kept on talking to me as she luuuuurved my plummy English accent.

New Orleans (and Baton Rouge) are both filled with pozzies and in a warmer climate, both have casinos (as well as the gulf coast of Mississippi). If you're looking for casinos, warm weather, and a large gay friendly city with a sizable positive population New Orleans is the ticket. Although we're due a pretty sizable hurricane roughly every 5 years or so and it's been 6. The last one just took out the power for a couple of days or weeks depending on how far in the country you live.

The current casino in which I work has a sister casino down near Baton Rouge. The whole hurricane thing is quite troubling, though. :/ I should probably go visit.

If you do let me know and I'll take you out on the town. I'm always looking for an excuse to drink and carouse.

Lived in DC, NYC, London, Atlanta, LA
My favorite was London... but might be out of the question unless you have British citizenship due to your HIV status. Weather is a bit cloudy, but really quite moderate. Club scene was really diverse and always happening. The only true 24 hour party town I've ever experienced.... and you're really close to a lot of history if you're into that sort of thing.
San Diego, LA have best weather in the country. Palm Springs is much farther inland and gets really hot, but dry heat.
Don't think you would have any problems in any major metro area. There's always a scene that'll fit your preferences.
-
There are plenty off Americans living in London , never meet one who thought it was a mistake, though all find it differant ,As long as as I have some degree off health I love my London and it certainly fulfilled my party years - wistfull sigh -
Hazy experience off a casino where a very good friend worked, before he had to return in a rush to Costa Rica , must off been family problems as he often professed his love for his mama .
I am out off touch with the usual way American,s whose work did not sponsor them, getting married to English Lady, but these are mere details , if you really wanted to you would find away as I said plenty do.
