88% of PLHIV Receiving Ryan White Care Are Have Viral Suppression

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced that people with HIV who receive medical care subsidized by the federal Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) achieved a record viral suppression rate of 88% in 2019.

In 2019, 88.1% of people receiving any Ryan White–covered services had a suppressed viral load, up from 69.5% in 2010.

By comparison, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently estimated that 64.7% of all people with diagnosed HIV in the United States have an undetectable viral load.

the Ryan White program has been a great boon for people living with HIV in America (approx 1.2 million). About half of those people (533+k) receive direct care (and medications) through the program. Since most HIV clinics/doctors/providers receive Ryan White funding, almost all PLWH receive better quality care because of the quality standards required in Ryan White funding. It's a win-win situation for all PLWH!

I've been a consumer advocate with the Ryan White Quality Management Programs in both North and South Carolina for over 10 years. (I live near the state line in SC but I receive healthcare in NC, so I took advantage of the opportunity to work with both states) I have been a part of gathering and evaluating data locally and at the state level, and using that data to not only ensure that providers are meeting the quality standards but to evaluate interventions that can help providers improve the care PLWH are receiving.

I would certainly encourage anyone who wondered how the system works, wanted to know more about services they might be eligible for, and/or wanted to help reduce the transmission of HIV and increase the amount of PLWH receiving meds and reaching UD, to check with their providers about being a part of the RW quality management team at their clinic, area health care providers, or state-level. We never have enough PLWH consumer voices at the table when our health care providers are discussing the health care that they are providing us. There should be nothing about us, without us at the table too so please consider if you have some time to help out the Ryan White program in your city or state.
