Title: The joy of air air travel to AMG
Post by: Buckmark on June 21, 2012, 06:43:43 pm
For all of you traveling by air to Washington DC for AMG 2012, I hope you are not traveling on Jet Blue (or on an Airbus aircraft).   ;D

http://abcnews.go.com/US/jetblue-flight-forced-emergency-landing-las-vegas/story?id=16608572#.T-OjN3mfY_c (http://abcnews.go.com/US/jetblue-flight-forced-emergency-landing-las-vegas/story?id=16608572#.T-OjN3mfY_c)

It's not often that you hear a plane referred to as a "vomitorium".   :o

Ok Professor, you are  mostly correct.

1.A passage located behind a tier of seats in an amphitheatre used as an exit for the crowds

But then there is this:

2 An area in which vomiting takes place, in particular a chamber supposedly used by ancient Romans to vomit during a feast so they could continue eating

However...

The sense of "a place to vomit" has come about as a misunderstanding of the original meaning of the word; although this newer sense is strictly incorrect, it is now common

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vomitorium

So I jsut learned something. See, the forums can be enlightening.

I liked the Airbus I flew on last year and booked another this year.  One side of the plane only has single row seating so I didn't have some heavy blob overtaking me.

It was an Airbus aircraft that went down in the Hudson river in 2009.  Of course, most of that can be attribute to those pesky Canadian geese.

Happy travels...  ;)

Airbus sounds like something you would need exact change to ride .

I once flew out of Chicago on one of those cheapy airlines , when I boarded the plane the pilot told me not to sit in the back because the chickens might disturb me . I laughed it off as a joke about the low fares until I sat down and heard chirping under my seat .

I was told it was too cold in the cargo area for live freight and that I would indeed be flying to Atlanta sitting on baby chickens . I did get a free complimentary bloody mary for sitting in the hen seat though so I didn't complain .

You should have received a free chicken dinner!  I bet you can fry up some delicious yard bird.  Hope there weren't any hungry gay bears on that flight. ;)

I thought about it . This was when you could still fly with a cigarette lighter , I could have cooked one of those baby's up .

I'm frying some yard bird up tonight for my friends as a matter of fact .

Why are you Red Staters always so anti-Airbus? I flew them all the time 10 or so years ago on Virgin Atlantic.

Because they make us ride in the back of the airbus for our past sins .

Yesterday a flight from JFK to Madrid was returned to New York after about an hour because of a sick passenger and strange wires hanging in the bathroom.  Weird stuff.

I've ridden on a Boeing trans-atlantic where one of the panes in the window was missing. Weird stuff.

In the interest of showing that Red Staters are fair and balanced forum participants, I give you a photo of a Boeing 737 that had to make a stop in Burbank, California for a refueling.   :P

I'd still like to know where the anti-Airbus h8t comes from. What's up with that? Do you honestly think a European consortium is incapable of top notch design and engineering?

There isn't any anti airbus sentiment here in Alabama because Mobile Alabama just got a huge contract to build them there . I personally didn't know there was an issue with airbus by anyone in the first place so I'm interested where it comes from as well .

For anyone who has flown into Burbank, that picture is understandable.  While Burbank is the easiest, most convenient airport to fly into in the LA area...the runway is super short.

Did you stick your head out the window like dogs do when riding in cars?

I don't see significant hating of Airbus.  Like any other product, it would take some extensive research and analysis to find out the root cause of any biases.  I can speculate on a few:

Could be an interesting study for someone in an MBA / business program.

  • Nationalistic tendencies.  Boeing is based in America while EADS (parent of Airbus) is based in Europe.
  • Government ownership.  The governments of France and Germany each own about 1/4 of EADS.  This offends those who believe in small government (even though both Boeing and EADS get plenty of government subsidies of one kind or another).
  • Longevity.  EADS and Airbus are relatively new "up and comers" compared to Boeing, and perhaps perceived as a threat.  I don't buy into this, because without EADS, Boeing would probably be facing anti-trust issues.
  • Anti-French sentiment in the US, since EADS is based in Paris.   This goes back to your "Freedom Fries" comment above.
  • Brand loyalty / marketing.  People often don't know why they like something better, they just do (Coke or Pepsi, L'Oreal or Lancome, Paper or Plastic). Inside of a jetliner, people probably wouldn't know if they are on a Boeing or Airbus aircraft.  They just want to strangle the parent of the misbehaving child in row 17.

Could be an interesting study for someone in an MBA / business program.

Hmmm, maybe I can use this as one of my responses to a task in one of my future courses....

It definitely sounds like doing a PEST analysis model would make for some interesting findings.  PEST = Political, Economic, Social, Technological. Even better would be a STEEPLE analysis (Social, Technological, Environmental, Economic, Political, Legal, and Ethical)......   both basically expand upon SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) by analyzing how each of the above factors impacts on a business' past, current, and future functioning in the market.

Wow..... I think I may be getting the hang of this whole MBA-thingy.

I will be more than happy to present my findings using PowerPoint regarding Airbus and using the STEEPLE business analysis model for a small fee   ;D

Afterall, anecdotal evidence appears to show that most companies expend a fortune on hiring private consultants to figure out what is going wrong with their business and how to improve it just prior to their implosion and subsequent declaration of bankruptcy.

A translation of the above, relevant citations, or further inquiries can also be provided...... for a small fee, of course   ::)

As a cultured traveler and someone who enjoys meeting new people (especially marines in kilts) and seeing the country, I travel by Amtrak whenever possible.

I haven't flown since our jaunt to Mexico City. It has become a real nightmare with all the security stuff that I have real suspicions don't really make you any more secure.

Yes, the truly civilized traveler, who enjoys the journey as well as the destination, likes pretty good food, a nice glass of wine, and who is in no rush, travels by train.  8)

HUGGLES,

Mark

Please people, any respectable traveler knows that the best aircraft in the skies is the Bombardier, made by our lovely square heads neighbors to the north. If they can make an awesome Sea-Doo, why not an Airplane? More legroom than a 737, and you can deplane in under 3 minutes due to them opening front and rear doors.

Love the trains too! Although I have only used them for short jaunts in the east, but would love to try a cross country trip some day  ;)

HUGGLES,

Mark

First -- what good is meeting a marine in a kilt if  you can't report back on what he wore (or not) underneath??  You must improve your investigative skill set my dear!!

Now -- shouldn't you be departing soon for your cross country jaunt to DC??  I want more titillating stories this year...   ;D

Looking forward to seeing you.

Hugs,
Mike

If we were meant to fly God would have given us wings. ;D

Also, If anyone needs picked up an airport, pm me.  Depending on when someone arrives  I may be able to pick them up.
