Billy Mays dead at 50
« on: June 28, 2009, 12:49:47 pm »
4 AM infomercial hour will never be the same for my recurring insomnia.

Quote
Tampa police say Billy Mays, the television pitchman known for his boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean, has died. He was 50.

Authorities say Mays was pronounced dead Sunday morning after being found by his wife at home. There were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play. The coroner's office expects to have an autopsy done by Monday afternoon.

Mays' wife, Deborah Mays, says the family doesn't expect to make any public statements and asked for privacy.

Mays was also featured on the reality TV show "Pitchmen" on the Discovery Channel, which followed Mays and Anthony Sullivan in their marketing jobs.

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman released a statement Sunday extending sympathy to the Mays family.

"Everyone that knows him was aware of his larger-than-life personality, generosity and warmth," Hillman's statement said. "Billy was a pioneer in his field and helped many people fulfill their dreams. He will be greatly missed as a loyal and compassionate friend."

In which case it is a good job that there are 352,755 babies born every day. There is bound to be some fresh talent amongst that lot.

I am sure there will be. But with how everything these days is  reality show, you really don't need talent.

I'll have you know that in the American Bear Community Mr. Mays was an idol, or so I've heard -- while I have some body hair I'm not a member of this sisterhood.

I was going to find you a decent representative late night TV commercial of Billy's, but he's so popular with Americans that I can only find and endless supply of parodies.  Just know that he's very much teh awesomest and mucho win.  But I'll wait for that Chinese drag queen to to validate my feelings.

And I thought it was just a contrast adjustment out of whack on my TV set ! He did have quite a paint job on that beard.

Also, I didn't know that he lived in Tampa. Wonder what the cause of death was. And he just started that new show, not that long ago.

Did he pass the gay test? Did the stick turn pink?
He looked gay to me. But what do I know...
I still think Magic Johnson is gay. Closeted, but gay.
I don't believe for a minute he got infected from hetro sex.

Why? Just because he's a fellow pozzie? I know plenty of men who ended up poz through hetero sex. It does happen you know - it happens all the time. Hiv isn't a good enough reason to question a person's sexual orientation. ::)

Ann, I am sure you have been around long enough to know that gay men generally love to fantasise that every straight male is ripe for conversion, or already a passive closet case.

If only you knew how many gay men I know who claim to know someone who has 'had' Mark Owen from Take That. Either the elusive acquaintance is the Whore of Babylon, or Mark Owen spends his life in a sling in a seedy gay sex club. Tall story is never a considered option.

This happenned as he was landing at TIA , on Saturday :

http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2009/6/29/490127.html?title=Autopsy+may+yield+clues+in+Billy+Mays

From Baynews9

"Mays was a passenger on the US Airways 737 aircraft that took a hard landing at Tampa International Airport on Saturday. He had been shooting a commercial in Philadelphia.

Luggage had fallen on Mays' head during the incident, and his family said he was not feeling well when he went to bed later that night, said police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

Officials have not said if his death is connected to that incident. They said it is all speculation at this point.

Airline spokesman Jim Olson told CNN Sunday there were no reported passenger injuries from flight 1241. The airline vowed to "cooperate fully" with authorities in the investigation.

"We were very sad to learn of Billy Mays' passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family," Olson said.

OK, fair enough, fantasies are fun. ;)

But the assumption that any man who is positive HAS to have had sex with another man gets on my nerves, and it's not just gay men who do it. A good friend of mine ended up with hiv through his missus - quite likely when her viral load was through the roof during primary infection. (she had an affair with the person from whom I acquired my virus) He gets comments all the time like, "I didn't know you were gay!" - he's not. He's not a homophobe either, by any stretch of the imagination, but he does find it rather annoying to have to constantly correct people who think the only way a man can get hiv is through sex with another man. He was even very nearly gay-bashed one time (by a group of lads who'd heard in the pub that he was positive and followed him outside), but luckily someone came around the corner and stopped the attack. My bf has problems with this too from time to time.

Sorry about the hijack. I'll shut up now. ;D

I'll shut up now. ;D

But if your boyfriend was Billy Mays it's not considered a hijack!!!    Wonder where that plane departed from?  Ann do confess!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
