through eastern NC to just south of Charlotte in SC. BBQ must be pulled pork with a vinegar non-tomato based sauce. Social stew is always authentic Brunswick.

I think you should have said if your slaves didn't make your family money from tobacco. Of course Miss P's booty has been paying reparations to black men for decades. That reminds me. Girl, remember that HUGE flame war when someone called you a racist?

I've heard he is racist as he won't sleep with white men.

MODIFIED:  Perhaps I should revive my own thread that got me bammed and banned  a few years back.  I read it every so often still thinking I was partially correct.   :o

I don't think it's a coincidence that sandpaper is measured in grits as that's exactly what they taste like.  I literally cried when forced to eat them once as a child.  Not sure what purpose they serve in life.

Ah yeah -- that was Clif right before AMG. He later apologized and even breezed through Philly on a business trip years later and I entertained him.

ps: the family farm was only a seasonal virtual plantation, though the farmhands did call my grandfather "Captain Emmett"!

Speaking of, the wiki entry on Polenta is a good read....  How sometimes a lot of the world is eating some very similar things.....

Polenta is similar to grits -- well the yellow, coarse stone ground kind that take 30 minutes to cook. But read this to learn the difference:

http://www.thekitchn.com/polenta-versus-grits-whats-the-difference-187807

I can tell when I cook polenta as it's almost as labor intensive as making risotto in that you have to stand there and whisk for 15 minutes and then stir the last 15. And as the article states polenta holds it shape noticeably better, which is why you take the left overs and pour it in a container to recook later -- use dental floss to cut in blocks and then grill it or pan fry, top with mozzarella, fresh basil and tomatoes for a "polenta caprese".

I keep all three items in my pantry -- all organic and stone ground: cornmeal, polenta and yellow grits

BBQ must be pulled pork with a vinegar non-tomato based sauce.

Depends. In the piedmont area, it's one way, but move just one county over and you add a little ketchup (horror) or go the other direction and find they use mustard.

Half my family was Carolina vinegar and pepper based sauce and the other half was mustard "Carolina Gold" sauce (bless their hearts, they didn't know better.)

Oh that is just so wrong. . . now why did I think you were from the south?  That is like saying cream of wheat is the same as grits.

After this thread, I am goning to have to go make me some cheesy grits and shrimp.

The way I think of it cornbread doesn't have much sugar, is coarse in texture and is made in an iron skillet. Corn muffins and corn cakes are sweet with a lighter texture and can be made in a square, muffin or molded pan. I rarely make cornbread because my partner doesn't like it. BTW, my partner has discovered the world of YouTube cooking and his new thing is making dinner by following the instructions of grandmothers in Spain and Cuba.

Lol as I'm preparing to move out I can guarantee you I'll be watching YouTube cooking videos very soon! I think we should have a picture cook off of cornbread, the prize winner will get......well I don't know, a surprise of some sort!

Pictures just won't do. Since I am probably one of the most virgin cornbread eaters here I suggest everyone send me a sample to judge.

Lol well he posted from my account the other night, I believe he's in the other room meandering on right now, I'm about to take a shower after all the sweaty hot gogo dancing filled clubs we went to. My god I've been missing out, one of the most memorable weekends I've had in my life.
