Very terrified and anxious
« on: July 08, 2013, 11:42:10 am »
Hi, first of all I would like to appreciate your job of creating awareness and helping those who are anxious whether they are affected with this dreaded disease.

I have a few questions for you and hope you would answer me if I had a risk or not.

On the 18 th of March I was with a sex worker.  I was without condom. I knew what would be the consequences of unprotected anal and vaginal sex so i refrained from anal and vaginal sex. I just kissed on her vagina, didn't insert my tongue and lips. I felt i might have got some vaginal fluids on my lips. Then i inserted my fingers into her vagina just a bit, not much. And with those fingers i touched her breasts and started sucking her breasts. May be when I inserted my fingers i got some vaginal fluids which i rubbed on her breasts. That's all.

But when I reached home I was very terrified thinking that I might have contracted HIV from these activities. I was thinking about it day and and night. And on the 15th day I got one canker sore in my mouth, it made me more anxious and terrified and I started to have slight fever, headache, muscle aches, trembling in hand and legs, nausea, weakness in limbs, loss of appetite, pain behind the eye, loose stool once. And after 2 months after that exposure i had hives like rash on my arms. I just wanted to kill myself because of the stupid thing i had done and was convinced that I have HIV. The fever doesn't last more then 3 hours and it comes and goes after every 9-10 days.  Its been 3 months since that incident, still i am very anxious. it always remains at the back of my mind.

Now my questions to you are.

1. What do you make of my exposure ? Do you think i might have contracted HIV from those activities. ?

2. Are my symptoms HIV related or do you think they are the symptoms of anxiety ?

3. Would you recommend testing for me ?

Please not that was my first sexual experience. I never had sex before. Thanx

Bhutan, you are worrying needlessly about HIV. Nothing you did sexually put you at risk for HIV transmission. The only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. As long as you consistently properly use condoms for those activities you will be well protected.

Of course there is nothing HIV-specific about any of your symptoms since you didn't have a risk. If they continue you should discuss them with your doctor.

Becoming sexually active is exciting and it can also raise a lot of anxiety. Gradually you will become more comfortable. Just remember to use condoms for intercourse. We also suggest that anyone who is sexually active ought to at least once a year have a full STD panel done because other STDs are much easier to acquire than HIV.

This time you're ok. Get on with your life and just check with your doctor if your symptoms continue. You don't have an HIV problem.

You're welcome, Bhutan. Remember you are responsible for your own health and make sure if you have intercourse you are always wearing a condom. No exceptions. Having sex is one of the joys of life but you want to do it in a way that protects you and anyone with whom are with.

Cheers.

I had a question a few weeks ago and the moderators here gave me a straight forward answer. I thank all of them for that.

Now am not here to ask any other question but want to share something with all of you that validate the advice being given here that cunnilingus is not a risk for HIV. Check this Government website

This is the Australian Governments website that reiterates that cunnilingus is not a risk for hiv.

For all of you who are worried about any cunnilingus episode, listen to the moderators here they know what they are talking about.

Thanx again to all of you, Cheers

Worried,

That site's information on giving blowjobs is ... ludicrous. Don't give a blowjob if you've recently eaten? Give me a break. The only time hiv might - might - be transmitted while giving a blowjob is if the guy you're sucking has a very high viral load and you've got terrible oral health. Eating a meal does not equal terrible oral health. Chronic amphetamine use (for example) often does.  Talk about erring on the side of caution.... This is the type of misinformation we have to deal with every day in this forum and it drives me crackers, so thanks a heap for bringing it here.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
