Meet and Greet/ Memorial Servise
« on: March 12, 2015, 03:16:15 pm »
Hi everyone

Just wondering if we are going to have an official Meet and Greet? and do I have to buy a new party frock for the occasion?.  :D

How about our Memorial Service?

Hal, is there somewhere we could hold one that you know of?

Can't wait to see everyone again.

Keep in mind this is the earliest we have ever had plans in place!

Most assuredly we will have a Memorial Service for all of our beloved departed (and of course Rocky.)  Hopefully we can find a suitable venue near where we are.  There is still plenty of time to put all of this together.

We are steps away from Beale Street which may be the Mother of all Meet and Greet venues (although the same can certainly be said of Bourbon Street and the entire city of New Orleans.)  I am confident we will have a great evening event to go with our Memorial Service.

I will be happy and honored to lead the Memorial Service again but will be seeking input and assistance later, especially in gathering the names to be read and honored.

Let's keep promoting AMG 2015 to others...we know they will not regret it once the come and see what we accomplish together!

I think a good place to start would be the First Congregational Church. https://www.firstcongo.com/

I think they would be very open to the idea. It's a great location located in the Cooper Young neighborhood http://cooperyoung.com which is well worth a visit. Give them a call and I'm sure they would welcome you with open arms.

Zach, a lot depends on availability and such.  Typically, as we get closer to the date we're better suited to secure a location.  Of late, location has become a non-contentious issue (unlike my first AMG) but instead focuses on the point of the Memorial service.  I am  fine with any location, including a church.  I really don't believe it'll collapse on me any longer.  ;)

For me, this part of our gathering is the primary purpose.  Our beloved Gary speaks with such eloquence and grace that touches your soul.  My first AMG memorial service overwhelmed me and truly changed the direction of my thought processes.

It's very somber but necesary.  And for some of us LTS, contributing a long list of lost loved ones to be read can be a difficult task.  It's like starting the grieving process all over again.  But a strange thing happens after experiencing this service; I discovered that it's ok to focus on the fond memories instead of dwelling in the deep darkness of the horrors of it all.

Being honest is not wronging others, continuing the dishonesty is.

i only speak out because i know this church, i used to build a house with their habitat group every year, i stay at the hostel in their attic when i'm in memphis

edited to add: didn't even know it had ever been a contentious issue. but if it's due to it being a church, i understand. although i can say it's just about the most liberal church there is.

^It's the gay church in our town. Plenty of mo's go there. I think they even use to host (still might) some AIDS related events. Don't worry I'm sure God steers clear of the place.

The church sounds like a fine choice, much as Metropolitan Community Church here in New York would be a fine choice as all are welcome there and I have attended programs with my friends there on several occasions.

Regarding the meet and greet I am sure we can find a suitable venue for that.

Besides visiting the Elvis venues it was also recommended to me by previous visitors to take a boat ride on the Mississippi, they said it was much fun and very educational as well.

The Church sounds great, do we need to talk to them to make arrangements ?

Jody, that is the only thing we didn't do in Memphis, but I would be up for it definitely.

Thankfully we walked just one more block!!!  I remember a couple of people who took a cab and were dropped off way out yonder.  They walked forever and paid too.

The Congregational Church sounds fine. As a UU, I am pretty open to just about everything.

Hi there

Does anyone have any ideas on a Family Friendly Restaurant for our Meet and Greet?

Hal can you suggest anything, keeping in mind we will have our wee Minnie with us.

Yeah, needs to be kinda quiet place. You don't want to see my parents all riled up. Dad dancing on the table can be a bit embarrassing. ; )

As long as they have burgers or chicken nuggets, I'm not picky.

I miss you Jan!

nothing firm...I suspect we will decide all of this on Thursday or Friday at the latest when we arrive.  This is going to be a "laid back, southern fried" AMG!
