A "Birther" Boom
« on: July 22, 2009, 07:40:58 pm »
A movement is growing that claims that President Obama is not really the president, because he was born in Kenya.  Watch this town hall meeting and be afraid, be very afraid.

Joe,

And the scary thing is, these people vote !! I was watching Chris Matthews last night, this was one of his topics.  He had the copy of Obama's birth certificate in front of him.

He had Rep John Campbell on last night ( who was feeding this conspiracy theory)

After watching Rep John Campbell, I'm beginning to think that America should simply "fire" Congress and elect an entirely new Congress.  It's time to clean our house and the best place, to start and do that, is by replacing Congress... every last one of them.

The people in the video are part of the x% of Americans that believe that dinosaurs coexisted with humans.  The fictional belief that Obama is not a U.S. citizen has been debunked but these dimwits are either not interested in the truth or not capable of rational thought (or both).

They may be dimwitted, but they get to vote and that is what is scariest of all.  Until there is some greater unity in America, I fear we will continue to get a government, funded by lobbyists, instead of the government that Americans deserve.  Change has to come to America and universal health care is an excellent first step.

You know... this has been pondering me a lot. And this is what I believe. I posted it on another political forum so this is my post from there. (you know me... the big mouth)

The birthers are not really questioning Obama’s birth rights or location. They are actually a fringe resurrection of something that has been around for a long long time. The Klan.
These people are not really concerned about where Obama was born. No solid proof of citizenship will ever satisfy them. What they are upset about is that a black man sits in the Whitehouse.

The term “birthers” is the new cape and hood. Their secret handshake.
Their “Are you one of us” movement.
They were already upset enough with black man in the presidency, but now this black man is picking a Latino woman to set on the US supreme court.
That put them over the edge, and started the whole birthers thing going, again.
And we shouldn’t be surprised who’s involved, like CNN’s Lou Dobbs.
In the old days of the Klan, some of the most upstanding citizens were members. Teachers, clergy, the local store owner, the doctor, the everyday housewife.
That is why they needed the disguise of robes and hoods, back then.

The birthers movement is the modern day resurrection of the Klan.
They are not upset about Obama, as much as they are upset that “America”
they knew is slipping away from them.
That is why no proof of citizenship from Obama will ever satisfy them,
because that is not what their fight is about. That is not the real issue.
They are mad and angry that a black man sits in the Whitehouse, makes decisions,
and can call the shots.

So its about time these so called “birthers” are called out for what they really are.
What they really stand for. What they really are doing, or trying to do.
This is important for discussion because they are never going to drop the issue.
And their movement will grow.
Because their issue is not the citizenship of a black president,
it’s the issue that a black president exists. And this president is now naming
a woman Latino to the highest court in the land.
And yes, high profile people like Lou Dobbs (and many others) are not ashamed
to admit they are a part of this group. This movement.
They are not harmless, they have power, and need to be exposed for what they are.
The modern day Klan.

A poll that was recently done showed that the birther phenomena was something like 58% Republican, and 56% in Southern states.

We really would have been better off to just to let those states go back in the 1860's.

Nope, no need to contest it.  Let's face it -- they WANT to go their own way, even Gov. Perry of Texas said so.  So fine, let's think about it.  Other than Texas none of these states give more to the federal government than they take back, so they're all basically "welfare" states with under-developed economies.  Plus, if the rest of the US allows them to leave the South would have to pay off their portion of the national debt, as well as relinquish all military basing rights (a huge employer there).

And you know we won't have to build that border fence any more, unless we build it north of Oklahoma!

The bottom line is that it's conservatives in the South who prevent the US from being like ever other sane industrialized country around the world -- they're why we haven't had national healthcare DECADES ago, and yeah I'm going to go there and say that the reason is entirely race-based.

Other than unhinging some crackpot who decides it's his patriotic duty to take a shot at our president, I'm glad there's a birther movement and that the Republican Party is forced to own it. It's a constant reminder to sane folks just how loony and racist their base has become.

I live in the belly of this lunacy. My cousin was railing the other day because his son with C F is about to be dropped from Medicare and he doesn't know how he'll pay for his care. I said that's why we need universal care. Of course he launched into talk radio talking points about the evils of the government taking over (socialism) health care (didn't notice the irony), he pays his taxes and deserves it and that if we would just send all the immigrants back home and got rid of all the welfare queens all would be right in his little world. Sadly, he'll continue to vote against his own best interest and be forced into bankruptcy spouting Beckism's.

And obviously he was too much of an idiot to realize that Medicare is socialism in the first place, so he's been a socialist all of his life.

Now that I have read more on this so-called movement, I do not believe that it has anything to do with where Obama was born, but has everything to do with the fact that he is a member of a minority, who is now president.  To add further insult to injury, as many Americans believe, he had the unmitigated gall to nominate a Hispanic to the Supreme Court.  A nominee who has stated that her own culture and background, has enabled her to make decisions that are equal or better to those of a white person.  Add to that, the trend that Hispanics will most likely become the majority in the 2040s and you can bet that scares the shit out of a lot of white folk.

To think that minorities could become predominate in America and that as they rise to power, they might actually side with each other, just like many whites do now, is absolutely chilling to some people and they are all but powerless to stop the onslaught.  The face of America is changing again, just as it did a century ago and I think that scares the people in power now.  I think it scares the GOP the most, because their base is white-centric and their power is being diluted, each and every time a minority rises to a level of influence, equal to their own.

I believe there should be terms limits for all forms of government, to insure that our government begins to reflect the true will of the people and not just a bunch of old white guys, who dominate our Congress now.  Yes change is coming and to some Americans, that change will overwhelm them and it is coming way too fast.

While I agree with everything everyone has posted so far and I have never voted for a Republican for President we might actually be having this conversation even if John Mccain was President now.

Anyone remember this?

Why is there even a debate about Obama's birthplace? Obama has already told us he wasn't born in the U.S.

You're absoluely right Joe.  The current generation of power can see that power slipping right through their fingers and they have fumbled so badly in the last 10 years that the only thing they can do about it is now is exploit on the fears of governed.

There is an old Chinese proverb  “If you want happiness for a lifetime - help the next generation.” But these current bunch of leaders have been so selfish and short-sighted that they're all running out the door with their pockets full of cash (thanks to their rich lobby friends and the talk-radio bunch) and everyone else be damned.

Jefferson said every generaton needs a new revolution.  That's what we're going through now although we won't see much blood in the streets. I can guarantee you, though,  the Republicans are not going to go quietly into the night.  They'll be just like that Republican Woman caught on YouTube, wrapped in a flag and making everyone stand for the pledge of alligence.  Or the Minute Men patrolling the borders, with their 12,000 rounds of ammo in hand.

It's all a rather sad and pitiful picture.

THe trends continues...
Notice how many republicans are now against Sonia Sotomayor?
This has nothing to do with birth place. Nothing!

And get Grassley, our bank bought senator from hell.
Trying to kill healthcare reform.

Clinton was lucky and blessed enough to rescued those two girls from No. Korea.
So what does Grassley do??? Bitch about it.

They are soooooooooo pissed at their loss of power, and the fact the country
is FINALLY waking up to reality.
Its about time Americans stopped being fooled and constantly voting against their own interest.

The next thing those nutty republicans will fear, is that Obama will end the war. At least in Iraq.
OH THE HORROR....

But that Grassley is a snake in the grass. He drives an old pickup and acts like he is your old kind hearted grandpa. He even visits the local restaurants where the seniors hang out in, when Grassley is in town, and sits and acts like good old uncle joe.
THen... back in washington, he voted against those Seniors, takes money from the banks for rewriting bankruptcy laws, and now is pocketing healthcare insurance dollars to kill the reform.
Grassley is dangerous and mentally ill.
If he were an average citizen, he'd be the type that walks into a store with a assult weapon and starts shooting. He's a real nut-job. And he keeps getting re elected.... It scares me.

Against my better instincts, I think there is just an itsy bitsy teeny weeny chance something is fishy about Obama's birthplace. 99% sure he was born in usa, and I dont give a crap if he wasnt, even though it would be anticonstitutional.....

Its just that his detractors have fallen on an area in which some original documents, as "burden of proof" will never be provided, due to Hawaii supposedly not keeping paper records.  And the mother's globe trotting and taste for foreign men. The african grandma says Obama was born in the USA.  Isnt that enough?

Obama is hard to pin down. Black but not black. Always asked about the African American experience or history, but he has no African American history himself, just his own.

Michele is the "African American" who Americans can relate to.  They have pictures of her ancestors slave cabin.

Obama is a new a kind of citizen.  If you can not define it in established ways, fit it into preconceived boundaries, this makes a lot of people nervous.

What a screwed up country - thank you Bush.  Somehow we have arrived at this schizoid public dialogue, public face.  Have to support the troops, and yet these wars are currupt.  There is a horrible recession, no its over, but its a jobless recovery.  The banks are failing and bankers are robber barrons, no they are making tons of profits and we need bankers to make money and spend it to keep the economy strong.  I'm so confused.....

Yes, you are confused and your post confirms it. The state of Hawaii kept paper records and provided a copy of his certificate of birth. What's more troubling to me is your "taste for foreign men" (or did you mean to say black men) comment. Your astute analysis (not) of the African American experience is a classic example of someone who is not an African American.

I understood that the State of Hawaii provided / published a document, produced now, saying he was born in Hawaii, and the whole point of the stupid birthers is that no original document has been publicly published, because it doesn't exist anymore.
Edited:  so, I stand corrected. It does exist, but its not public, still:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-07-27-obama-hawaii_N.htm

"Taste for foreign men" is me speaking in place of the bigoted "birthers" and does NOT reflect my prejudice.

Obama is 1st generation African American.  No black american relatives whatsoever.  He is African American, still.

In my opinion, he flubbed his interview with Anderson Cooper in Ghana at the slave post.

Having studied with Cornell West AND Henry Louis Gates AND Wole Soyinka, and having raised money for the Schomberg and worked for Toni Morrison, I feel I can express an opinion about the Black American experience, without being discredited because I'm not black.  How lame is that?  So then keep out of anything "white", yourself.  Or are you "white"? Speaking for whom, then.

Didn't start the flame war.
Wont continue it, thanks for warning.

Just defending my right to contribute to the forum.

Not making an "astute analysis" anyway, of the african american experience.

My analysis is of why some americans can't deal with Obama, and the thesis is because he is "other" - not put into easy categories.

I am hardly the only lefty making this analysis.

To discredit someone's opinion because they are not this or that or the other gender or ethnicity, is ridiculous. You discredit opinions based on the opinions voiced.

Didn't start the flame war.
Wont continue it, thanks for warning.

No, maybe you didn't start it, but replying to me in the manner you have isn't exactly trying to put an end to it either. You're just begging for another response.

My first warning was a friendly one. This warning is an official one. Knock it off. You didn't need to explain what you were doing in your previous post, it was already self-evident.

This hijack ends here. OK?

Sorry Ann, but I have to respectfully disagree that this was a hijack. Just pointing out the inconsistencies that existed in a post about birthers, which is why the thread was started. I'll move on and let the thread return to a tepid pudding of banality.

I've tired of people thinking they have freedom of expression without others having the freedom to respond.

You're right though, it's silly and tedious.

What's more troubling to me is your "taste for foreign men" (or did you mean to say black men) comment. Your astute analysis (not) of the African American experience is a classic example of someone who is not an African American.

This is where the hijack started, Doxie, with you passive-aggressively accusing Mecch of racism, thereby making it personal. It's one thing to disagree with someone's opinion, and another thing completely to bring it to a personal level by making thinly veiled accusations. It's obvious you were prodding him with a stick, hoping he'd get into it with you.

Back to the subject at hand or there WILL be time outs given.

I know, I had always hoped for Ann Coulter to become spontaneously mute, till she decided to openly criticise that buffoon Lou Dobbs regarding his apparent support for the "birthers" view (he continues to give them airtime, even though he is now taking a more hypocritical stance regarding the issue).   Not that I like her any better, but I'm glad that he is getting some heat from his own camp.

Against my better instincts, I think there is just an itsy bitsy teeny weeny chance something is fishy about Obama's birthplace. 99% sure he was born in usa, and I dont give a crap if he wasnt, even though it would be anticonstitutional.....

I disagree with the tiny weeny chance, but like you, I don't give a crap.  While I'm not 100% pleased with the job he is doing, he IS our President.

I don't think the birthers are racist (well, not all of them.)  I *do* think they are sore losers.

THe trends continues...
Notice how many republicans are now against Sonia Sotomayor?
This has nothing to do with birth place. Nothing!

I'd be against someone being appointed to the Supreme Court who continuously referred to her decisions being good as a result of being a "wise latina."

THAT's racism.  Obama really fucked up here.  And from what I understand, it was a pattern with her, not just once.

But she's in....for life.  Maybe at least she'll balance out the Chief Justice.

It was one speech, given several times, and I highly doubt you read the entire speech for proper context. Considering that you already think Obama is a homophobe because of his skin color this fact wouldn't surprise me, but at least you're consistent.

The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's "death panel" so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their "level of productivity in society," whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

Aunty, this morning I just read that statement made by Palin, and can't believe people still listen to her like she's the 2nd coming of Christ.

Not only do they listen to her, they'll go vote for her in 2012, although I think their numbers are small enough that she won't actually get very far.

I've already started seeing Palin 2012 bumper stickers.

LOL! That would be awesome if she really was the 2nd coming of Christ! Oh, man... I'm going to have fun with that idea. THAT is screenplay material.

This seems a little more plausible --
