A much better place today!
« on: June 10, 2011, 10:54:48 am »

Sometimes just walking to the post office can be one of best things in the world.  I lost my driver’s license due to my vision in June 2009.  My license was set to expire and I stupidly tried to renew them instead of letting them expire.  Since they were suspended for medical reasons it required a release from my treating physician before the medical suspension could be lifted.

Living in area such as mine, mobility doesn’t exist without your own personal transportation.  I continued to drive anyways whenever I felt capable but several months ago my uncle, (who is our local police chief) stopped by to inform me that his department became aware and warned that I had to stop puttering around town.

My doctor wouldn’t sign the release until I completed the cranial surgery and had a thorough exam with the eye doctor.  Dr. Murry finally signed the release unbeknown to me and I received a letter from the BMW today indicating I can reinstate my license.  I’m so freaking happy!  Mobility again.  Since it’s been over a year, I have to take the road test again.  Damn, I hope all my bad driving habits don’t show during the test.

I never go fast enough to do damage.  I actually don't really like driving, it's just necessary.  I'm probably the only person my age that's never been stopped for going too fast.

Congrats Wolf --

I'm sure you will do fine on the road test.  Just remember:
1)  "10 and 2" (hand placement on the wheel)
2)  Turn signals are your friend
3)  Stop completely at stop signs
4)  No wide turns
5)  No sharp turns
6)  Watch both rearview and side view mirrors
7)  Tap twice on brake before stopping
8 ) Take off slowly (no jack rabbit starts)
9)  Obey the speed limit
10) Limit distractions (i.e. turn off the radio; don't answer the cell while taking the test and no texting while driving)
11) Throw any empty white zin bottles out from the car before arriving for the test, use a breath mint or two if you emptied the bottles while heading over to take the test
12) Look at good-looking men with your peripheral vision (don't take eyes completely off the road)
13) If the guy giving you the test is cute subtle flirting may be in order ---

Remember all of the above and you will be driving in no time ---
Of course, in Miami we do the reverse of everything I have written above in order to get our license. ;D
Best to you!

They don't do that any longer.  You have to drive forward and backwards through some cones or something.

Phil, anyone from Florida giving driving advice is like someone with anger issues teaching people how to meditate.

Florida is the only state I've been where I'm peacefully sitting at a red light while the cuban behind me is honking is horn for me to run it.  What a lovely state.

That might not have been a Cuban behind you.... it could have been me... we are trained to honk immediately when the light turns from red to green if the person in front doesn't go  ;D

Oh, and using turn signals are a big "no-no" here ------  I figure I will save hundreds of dollars over my lifetime of driving from not having to buy replacement bulbs.....  we also never want the person in the next lane to know that we are coming into their lane, otherwise that person will speed up to keep you from coming over....
Yep, we are some real real friendly drivers down here ------- whenever I go up to Ocala to my mother's place, I have to get used to how polite all of the driver's are.  My brother actually got pulled over up there for not using his turn signal, and the officer told him, "I don't care what you all do in South Florida, but when your in Ocala, we use signals."

I'm going to stick to my snap judgement and keep my opinion that drivers in florida are universally bad.  In Louisiana we actually let people in and wave hi, because we're real southerners who are friendly not faux southern like you Floridians.

Actually, that's the problem - most people that live in South Florida, are not actually from South Florida - most are from NY, PA, Cuba, Haiti and everywhere else, except Florida. It is rare to meet a native South Floridian.  Although, most consider you a native if you have lived here for more than 10 years (so, I would qualify).  But, I am a polite driver (lol - NOT!) ::)

At least in Florida you don't have to worry about coming up behind a horse and buggy when you're doing 50 or so.  We have to drive to drive semi-slow because of the horrible roads here.

True - except, some of the cars on the road here (because there is no state car inspections) drive slower than a horse and buggy --- or there is a little old 85 year old person behind the wheel heading to Bingo. :)

What, no State Inspections?

So you are saying I could bring this to Florida and take it out on the roads with no prob? (special note of the rubber chicken in the cage)...

I had to do that when I did my Ambulance driving test...I killed four cone's reversing... ;)

Best of luck and keep us informed.

My nephew is finished with college til fall so he is coming from Athens to help me practice and allow me to use his little Ford Focus.  I don't have access to a single small vehicle around here.  Everyone (including my mum) drives those damn 4x4 pick ups.  I am quite worrying about the maneuverability portion.  You have to use your mirrors to back through the course and if you turn around to guide yourself, you automatically fail.  I still suffer a vertigo type sensation when attempting to use mirrors from backing up.  Even in the best of days, I don't think I used mirrors for that!

Thanks for all the well wishes.  I've had an incredible sense of relief and managed to have a great day yesterday and have another full day planned today.  I think this lack of mobility was taking an emotional toll.  I've already accepted that it might take a couple of times to pass the test so I'm good with that.  It took me 3 times when I was a teenager so I already know I typically suck at driving anyways.

Well, today is the big day finally.  I'm heading to the DMV this morning.  I've kinda been confused by the processes and I have to start over like a "newbie".  I have to go take the written test portion for my "learner's permit".  If I pass that portion, I can immediately take the driving portion if there's an opening.  Otherwise I have to schedule it for another day this week.

I better get them, I was sure enough to restart my insurance.  I'm totally a nervous Nellie and didn't sleep much last night.  Hoping to do a road trip soon.  WVA, here I come?

Wolfie

edited to add:  I had to wait because my nephew wrecked his little car (see other post).

reedited to add:  I now have to go back Friday as one of my "documents" wasn't done correctly.  I guess a t wasn't crossed or something?  No wonder people get upset with bureaucrats.
