Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

giving handjob w/ small cuts on hand?

hi,
I've been meeting up w/ ppl from craigslist through casual encounters, dating, etc. and usually end up giving a hj. I've met up with over 10 people before (don't judge me).  I've thought you can get hiv by a hj but i am worried.
You know those small pieces of skin near your fingernails, well I have a bad habit of cutting them off with a nail clipper every day or few days and then it bleeds. and i had scraped the joint on one of my fingers and it was a bit red for  week. like it was still a new cut and when i wash it, it would sting. when i give the hj, the sperm would release directly over my cuts sometimes where it was just freshly bleeding. what are my chances of being infected?

Rod is quite correct. Giving handjobs is not a risk for HIV transmission, even if you have small cuts on your hands or fingers.

but why do you say no?  i've read that hiv can be transmitted through semen + cuts.  the cut on my hand was fresh and still bleeding (like it would sting).

also someone told me this, so there is SOME risk?
If "potentially" infected semen got into your open cuts (open meaning, they still bleed), you do have a risk of contracting a blood borne pathogen such as HIV or hepatitis.

There is no way to calculate "how much" risk, but the risk is there. Your risk, of course, would be higher if the recipient of your services was HIV positive. But since you don't know that, and you are worried about having contracted HIV, the best thing to do would be to wait for at least 3 months from your potential exposure and get a test done.

Thanks, but I've also read on some sources that transmission is possible from cuts, open sores, etc. (Even though none has been documented).  but that doesn't mean it can't happen?

Listen Sarav - if you don't wanna take our expert opinions on this, fine. But understand that you won't be allowed to turn this thread into a back-and-forth thing about handjobs because you read some stuff somewhere.

You've asked your question and we've rendered our answers. It's pretty straightforward stuff.

HIV is not transmitted through small cuts and open sores on your hands.

Thanks I appreciate your responses, and this makes me feel more at ease, I am very happy to hear this that there was no risk.  sorry I don't mean to start any back and forth thing, just that there's so much information out there and it's confusing and i don't know what to make of it.

Yeah well that's the thing about the Internet. Lots of information of doubtful quality.

Like I said, when it comes to HIV transmission we're the best. Don't listen to the rest.

There is. HIV is transmitted inside the body. It's a fragile, fussy virus which requires particular circumstances to mount a successful infection. Small cuts and sores on the outside of the body simply don't provide the environment a virus like HIV needs.
