Title: relly need some advice. . .
Post by: audioholic on March 27, 2008, 07:14:02 pm
OK ive posted on here a few times but i dont get a lot of responses, probly because i cant frequent this board very often because i dont want to disclose my status to people who dont need to know really. . . . .

so heres my delima, when me and my fiance (who is a guy) met i was 10lbs lighter than him and my metabolism was still great and i could eat the world and not gain a pound. NOW i have been kinda chubbing out a lil in my belly and thighs and weigh like 15lbs more than my fiance. .  im still a slim guy im just trying to get my love handles to go away and a lil chubby belly i have to go away. . .

i started meds roughly 2 months ago and havent noticed any gain or drop in my weight, i started last night a weekly regiment of situps/cardio/and some light weight lifting. im thinking 5 nights a week at least 15/20 mins a night and i should start seeing the area firm back up.

am i thinking in the right direction? do i need to be focusing more on anything because of the hiv and/or meds?? i just want my nice 6pak back and all. . .

any and all advice is helpful . .

your muscles need time to repair in order to grow, so 5 nights a week for weight trainng is probaby too much.  and you should get at least 20 mins in for the cardio.  personally, i'd try to start off with 3 nights a week, 20 minutes for cardio and the remaining 10 for some light general weight training.  the other thing to consider is that your metabolism might just be beginning to slow down with age, so you might not be able to get away with "eating anything and never gaining a pound" from here on out.  it sucks, but what are ya gonna do?  i'd seriously pay stricter attention to your diet right now, and try to cut down on the fats and sugars you're consuming.  and cut out late night snacking.

i'll let some of the muscle heads on here go further with this, but that's my two cents.

thanks for the response!

i have started to watch my diet and definatly eating more healthy (fruits, veggies, less fats and sugar, practically no soda!) so i kinda have that down so im not "gaining" more just need to lose a few vanity pounds and tone up a lil. . . . i guess the metabolism thing could be my age i did just turn 23 (omg soooo old . HA) but want to be able to keep my body the way it was a year or so ago. . .

p.s. cant wait to hear from the "muscle heads"   :P ;)

hmmm....i wouldn't think so at the ripe old age of 23. *hates you*

but yeah, dump the sodas.  go for water whenever possible.  i'm getting big into the flavored waters like Propel right now.

1 gram sugar = 4 calories.

1 typical soda (Coke) = 38 grams

38 x 4 = 152 calories you'd need to burn off just from the soda.  the sugar makes a big difference.

good luck.

I use to weigh 195lbs  :( and have been about 145 to 150 lbs. now for the last 25 years  ;D  (I'm now 51).  During the major time period of losing I just ate a grapefuit a day (yes thats all I ate in a day) for about 9 months with lots of water.  Never got sick, just thin I guess my body fed off the fat for awhile.  I also did a little jogging and slowly started eating normally (but very small amounts), only drank water, no liquor or any type of soda, coffee (black, no sugar/cream) also cut my appetite. I went from a 46w to a 28w and am 5'10".  I've been a 29w now since I was 25, yea it was tough but its harder to be fat than working to get and stay thin.  I wish I had figured that out in high school.  I went to my 15th. high school reunion and no one recognized me.  The most popular girl even tried to pick me up...which it had been a guy  ::)

I don't have any good advice for you except that before you go the grapefruit check your meds to see if it would affect them.  Something in the grapefruit makes them less effective.

Good Luck!

hmmm....wow.  dunno about the exercise on tv thing.  never tried it.  i always did elliptical machines.  those were my favorites. or walk/jog/run on treadmills.  just be careful with your joints if doing any running.  stretching is a really good idea.

i would think that the dancing you do would pretty much take care of most of cardio requirements.  compared to the average couch potato, i'm sure you're getting a fair amount through that...don't you think?

i used to love running.  screwed up my knees from it (no comments from the peanut gallery), so i had to cut that down a lot.  in fact, i've now cut it out completely!  go me.  but elliptical machines are awesome.  wish i had one of my own.  i'd use it nearly every day.  there are few pieces of exercise equipment that i could honestly make that statement about.

i am now in total "shape up for the new boy / omg it's almost summer" mode, so i'm in the same boat with you guys.

say it with me:  I AM THIN AND GORGEOUS !!

I'm still working on the whole 6-pack abs thingy, and like you, my metabolism seems to have started slowing down. But you seem to have a nice start in the right direction.  I found a couple of guys at my gym who were just ripped and had a stomach you could do laundry on and flat out asked them what they did to get nice abs.  Nearly every one of them said that it was mainly a combo of cardio and diet with at least some kind of ab workout every day.  I've only been following their advice for a month, but I have noticed a difference already ... and just in time for swimsuit season  :)  Hope you find a workout regimen that is right for you.

Dancing isn't as aerobic as you think. More like stop and go.  That's why I can only jog for 5 minutes without dying.  I can't wait for my metabolism to die down.  I'm sick of always being hungry.

One gigantic Barbara, Please.

Heh.  Saving that one for posterity.  You'll rue the day you made that little statement, tiny dancer.   :P  ;D

you better get into an afro-cuban class if you want an aerobic workout.
