I would recommend consulting your ID doctor, certain vaccines are highly recommended to people who are immune compromised. Prior to HIV diagnosis I always got my yearly flu shot, and remember the one year I didn't and got the flu I was sick for weeks. I will disclose that I now work in healthcare (TDAP and FLU is required), but due to being around others who are sick I also asked for the Pneumonia Vaccine as well.

I should have added live vaccines can be a big problem for immune compromised people. A healthy recipent of the vaccine is key and regardless hould be watched by your doctor. My doctor agreed  to give me the pneumonia vaccination because I was in good health. As a bonus most ID doc can administer all these vaccines during a routine visit.

Hi,..

I'm with socalpoz on this,  this is something you need to consult with your doctor about.

Having said that, I've been HIV positive since 1985, and had no problems receiving the following immunizations :

( most were done in the mid to late 90's, and the flu, I get annually ) some of the repeats and boosters were done after 2005.

Influenza ( every year for the past 17 years, when available, and usually late October or the beginning of November, never the nasal dose, always the shot. That will be coming up before i know it  :P CORRECTION EDIT the last 3 years of flu shots were given in September, or the first week of October. EDIT    H1N1(FLU) IN 2009.

I did the series of HEP - B (3 shots) that was around 1997. Did this through the workplace.

Ive had the pneumonia shot around 2003, but  it was repeated again due to low CD-4 count.

I've had the Tetanus and Diphtheria. ( I have also had the ten year repeat in EDIT 2009 )

Measles, Mumps, and
Rubella (MMR-----------> I had those when I was a kid. I am not far from being 62.

I never had any issues receiving any of the above vaccinations.

Whatever vaccinations you get, make sure to keep a good record of them !

Just to add,... I have an appointment with my infectious disease doctor, next week.

I am going to question him about the Zoster vaccine.  I've had shingles several times( last time being in 2003) and know how painful they can be.

So, if this vaccine can prevent or lesson another outbreak in the future, that would be great. Not that I am expecting an outbreak !

So I will find out more next week on this and report back. I will be curious as to what he feels about this.

I just had the flu shot from my doctor, they just come out with it.  I get one every year, this year it may me feel crappy for a few days, but not sick by no means.  this year it has 4 strains of the flu.

I've taken the pneumonia vaccine and also the HEP vacines as well.  I would take any vaccine that might keep me from getting sick

You really need to go over this with the help of your doctor.

The flu shot,ya you should get one every year.

You should be vaccinated for hep a and b (unless your already immune which your doctor can find out through specific blood tests).

The pneumonia vaccines are recommended for people living with HIV.  There are two different pneumonia vaccines, Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23.  You should receive both however they need to be administered in a particular order with a certain amount of time between them.

Doesn't your doctor keep track of all your vaccines and administer the ones you need?

It has been noted that peple who are aging in an enviromnent with younger kids (kindergarten teachers, large family grand mothers) have a reduced risk of later age shingles.

My son got varicella (shingles) that made him stay home for 2 months. I suppose I thus got a 'natural' reboost against VZV. in a few years, I will certainly discuss it with the doc!

Good Luck for next visit

Dear friends,

Thank you very much for your knowledge sharing.

I have just been advised by my doctor that I could take in the following vaccine AT THE SAME TIME:

1. Influenza
2. Pneumonia
3. Meningitis (meningococcal)
4. Tetanus

So my concern and question are:

- What should be the best timeline and order to take in the 4 vaccines into body to get have good solution? One week one vaccine or how? to make our body accept and deal good with the vaccines in the right way.

- Is Polysaccharide pneumococcal (PCV13, PPSV23) the Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23 that buginme2 mentioned? How should be a right ordor to take in this pneumococcal?

Hope to get your experience.

This is an article that recommends gay men get vaccinated against HPV. It seems I've seen a few articles recommending HIV+ people get this vaccine, too, but I don't have a handy citation for it.

After reading one of those about six months ago, I talked to my ID doc, and he didn't feel I should get this vaccine (he said I wasn't part of the target demographic).

So, do any of you here think this should be added to the recommended regimen or not?
Reality is frequently inaccurate.

here's a link from the cdc with possible side effects of various vaccinations;

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/side-effects.htm

Personally I wouldn't take them all at once but would space them, the a couple of them I know are going to making you arm sore for a couple of days. Perhaps you doctor should give more direction, will his office being administering them? If you have insurance it should be covered with only paying for an office visit.

why are you doing this on your own?  why isn't your doctor doing this?

both hep and pneumonia vaccines need to be taken in a specific order with specific spacing.  You shouldn't be doing this on your own or learning how to do it from strangers on the internet.

I spoke with my doctor today, to get his thoughts receiving the zoster vaccine.

He stated some HIV positive people are receiving the shot (S).  I asked if the vaccine is available through the VA, and he said not at this time.

Because the CDC doesn't yet approve it in HIV positive individuals, the VA is not permitted to give it out.

However, he knows of ( selected) HIV positive patients getting the vaccine, through Walgreens or another pharmacy, with no adverse reactons. ( This is a live virus). Tcell counts have to be over 200.

So, He didn't say "no" to me, but he didn't say "yes" either. He stated that even though my % is low, I am still stable to receive it.

At the end, I agreed to hold off on it.  My main point to him, was that I am now into my 60's, and having shingles several times already, I know how painful they were.

I am one of those daring individuals, and will give this some more thought later on.

Let me clarify what I saying here.  When I say I'm getting a double dose I mean that I getting twice as much as the first time I had the series of vaccinations.  There is a series of shots for HepB that need to be take over a period of time.  first shot, then 30 days later, and then again 6 months later.  I was not implying that I was getting all these at the same time.  However I did get vaccinated for 4 different things at the same time.

having had these same discussions (with my doctors), thoughts (about how well i am) and experience (shingles 3 or 4 times now), I am NOT one of those daring individuals at all. My thoughts are, if it ain't broke (been a long time since the last shingles) I don't wanna break anything. ;)

especially since breaking something would mean this vaccine induced another bout of shingles! You're either protected or you could be screwed. I don't like those odds enough ... at least not yet. LOL ;D
