HIV from no longer sterile needle
« on: September 08, 2022, 05:47:53 pm »
Hi, I was doing a self-test for HIV, which came back negative. I washed my hands before; at some point you have to prick your finger with a disposable plastic tool with a needle inside to draw blood from your finger. I punctured my finger and the blood didn’t come out, so without washing my hands I got up and took a screw out of a bag under the bed and broke the plastic tool from which I took the disposable needle, I placed the needle on the table which had not been cleaned and disinfected and without disinfecting the needle. Within 1 or 2 minutes I punctured my fingertip again, was I at risk for HIV or hepatitis since the needle touched the table that had not been cleaned for over a week and disinfected before?
I often put money, clothes, phone and other items on that table, could the needle have been contaminated by the surface of the table that came into contact with items I brought to places like discos or public transport?
I was on the train 10 minutes earlier, among other things.
I share the house with 2 other people who often bring their sex partners and I’m terrified that after sex they might contaminate door handles or other surfaces with their hands dirty with fluids.
I washed my hands twice before I started the HIV test, but not before I took the screw and put my hands on the carpet on the floor open the piece of plastic to take the disposable needle at this point no longer sterile.

Because I do it every once in a while, and about two months ago, I shared a rolled-up  bill with friends sniffing cocaine and I got paranoid.

Hiya,

Read both your post and details three times. Nothing you posted here is an HIV risk to you.

Here's what you need to know to avoid HIV infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms, and the only way of knowing is by testing.

Kind regards

Jim

Thank you Jim for your quick reply, my concern is sperm and vaginal fluids that may be on the surfaces of the house like door handles worn by my flatmates and their sex partners or on my personal items, could you be more specific please about why I did not take any risks?

Well, to start with your concerns meet none of the biological or environmental conditions needed for you to acquire HIV.

Also, HIV is extremely fragile, and sexual fluids are only a concern inside the confines of the human body, like during intercourse. Once exposed outside the body's confines, the receptors needed to infect corrode, leaving it unable to infect. In short, you can't acquire HIV from touching door handles or any objects and then poking yourself with a needle.

When needles are an HIV concern in non-occupational situations, it's through sharing hollow needles (syringes) during drug use, due to the volume of fluids containing HIV that are kept within a vacuum and then injected directly into the bloodstream.

However, to give you some context, HIV is so fragile that even accidental needle pricks with these discarded hollow needles in community situations has not resulted in a single documented case of someone acquiring in 40+ years of HIV.

The merry-go-round of pointless testing every few months for nothing isn't healthy or a sound coping strategy, if you keep having these irrational fears I would instead urge you to consider speaking to a qualified therpiast to help you cope with these thoughts.
