Tennessee: Convicted Pimps & Ho's must be tested for HIV
« on: May 12, 2007, 09:59:41 am »
Ah yes, the Bible Belt strikes again...

The state Senate unanimously approved a proposal to require people convicted of promoting prostitution to be tested for HIV.

The bill now heads for the governor's consideration.

If the legislation becomes law, it would probably be the first of its kind nationally.

The House sponsor, state Representative Ulysses Jones of Memphis, has said he proposed the measure after a Shelby County judge suggested pimps should be tested for HIV just like prostitutes and those who have sexual contact with them.

You can send a message to Governer Phil Bresden urging him to veto this ridiculous proposal at http://www.tennesseeanytime.org/governor/Contact.do

Oh for crying out loud! Nothing like reinforcing the mistaken notion that certain groups of people are more at risk than others. When oh when are the "powers that be" going to get it into their fat skulls that it's not people who are risky, but certain activities - namely unprotected intercourse.

Bah. It beggars belief.

And pisses me off!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
