negative hiv test at 10 weeks
« on: January 17, 2010, 07:51:03 am »
To Ann, Andy, etc,

I'm a female who had  brief  unprotected sex with a man whos status is unknown. He didn't ejaculate but i'm worried about the risk of presemen. i asked him to get tested with me but he said he was tested a while back and it was negative. Since then i've been extremely worried and was even given medicine for my anxiety. can i rely on my 10 week negative after this brief one time exposure? I was also tested for everything else and i'm all clear. the test was an oraquick advance rapid mouth swab. What are the chances that my test will be positive at 12 weeks?

Thank you very nuch!

Con,

It's rare for a six week negative to change to a positive at the end of the window period, and it's pretty much unheard of for a ten week negative to change. I fully expect you to continue to test negative. If you're going to be anxious over this, I suggest you confirm at 12 weeks for peace of mind.

You need to learn from this incident. You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Ann,

Does a persons size have anything to do with antibody production? I'm overweight and was wondering. I go for my 12 week test next monday. i've been told  that the odds are in my favor but still worried that it will be positve.

Thank you for the quick response!

Con,

No, weight does not change a thing. The vast majority of people - ANY people - who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point but is HIGHLY unlikely to change. A ten week negative just isn't going to change. You have a better chance of walking outside your house right now and finding an unclaimed winning lottery ticket worth 10 million lying in the gutter than you are to go on to test positive over this incident. I fully expect you to continue to test negative. And please do learn from this experience!

Ann,

Thank you. I feel much more relieved and i'm expecting a negative next week. Some people say wait until 13 but after 12 weeks, can i put this behind me and move on with my life?

Thanks

Con,

Twelve, thirteen, it doesn't matter. It's mainly the US that says 13 even though the same tests are used world-wide. Most of the world uses 12 weeks. It's simply a matter of how you carve up the year and define a three month period. After all, there are 13 twelve week periods in a year, but only 12 months. A month in medical terms is normally 28 days, which is four weeks.

You'll test negative no matter how you decide to define a three month period.

I went for a test at 11 weeks and it was negative. the test used was a clearview rapid. so far all of the tests that were used have been rapid test. I spoke to a man from one of the labs near my home and he said that rapid tests are no good and i should go in and get a standard test done. Should i feel good about my  negative results so far? I think the guy was just trying to make money? What should i do?

Con,

The rapid tests are perfectly legitimate, reliable and FDA approved for diagnosing hiv. If this guy works at the lab where he wants you to get a standard blood test done, then yes, he's just touting for business. Ignore him.

You don't have hiv.

That's great about your negative result.

BUT, learn from this experience. You can have intercourse with anyone you want to. Just do it the safer way which means always, without exceptions, using a condom for vaginal and anal intercourse. By doing that it won't matter if the guy you are with is HIV+ because you will be well protected.

Cheers.
